2 s FROM THE PRESIDENT The AlbAn Times

To All Employees,

I hope you all enjoy the return of The Alban Times, as it has always

been a great way to keep up with what’s going on within the Company. I

am happy to report that we are off to a better start so far this year than in

2010, and that I am optimistic that our slow but steady growth out of the

recession will continue. The activity level across the board continues to be

steady in product support, earthmoving equipment sales are improving, and

engine sales are continuing to be strong.

It all sounds good, but we still need the housing market to rebound for

me to feel like the economy is truly recovering. That market has been huge

for us historically, and we really miss it. That being said, I think we have

made inroads with a lot of new customers in the past couple of years that

maybe we wouldn’t have reached otherwise. The key is to build on that

and continue to grow our business. We have a lot of opportunities, but a lot

of them will require an increased level of focus and effort to take advantage

of. Again, enjoy the return of the Times, and as always, thank you for

doing your best for our company and our customers.

Alban Tractor Co. Inc.

To All Employees,

We are heading into the fall in good shape. We are active in all areas of our

business and getting the most out of what is out there. Our Strategic Plan is complete

and ready to roll out to all of you in the next couple of months, and we are making great

progress in integrating our marketing efforts and initiatives into everything we do for our

employees and our customers. I hope you see better and more timely corporate news

communication and a more aggressive approach in machine, engine, rental, and product

support sales.

Our annual Cat-A-Thon tent sale is scheduled for November 1, this year. Balti-

more’s own Mike Rowe, Creator, Executive Producer and Host of Discovery Channel’s

popular television show “Dirty Jobs”, will be dropping by this year’s Cat-A-Thon. He is

a big believer in Cat, and we are lucky to have him with us for the day. See the flyer on

page 17 of this issue for more details.

Finally, I have to recognize the outstanding efforts of everyone in our Engine

Rental Department for their collective phenomenal work during Hurricane Irene. The

group was on call 24/7 throughout the weekend and all went above and beyond to take

care of our customers. Great work – thank you!

Sincerely,

Alban CAT

2 s FROM THE PRESIDENT The AlbAn Times OcTOber-nOvember 2011 COMPANY NEWS s 3

This past May, Alban hosted training for Eaton drivelines and transmissions for the new CT660 On-Highway Cat Truck. Alban was named one of four dealerships to be the Regional Dealer Learning Center for the On-Highway Trucks. Alban has the responsibility of training 14 other dealership technicians for the North East part of NACD. The first training session for Eaton was for the Subject Matter Experts which included Dealer Trainers and Technical Communicators for the 14 dealerships and Alban. This week-long training session was held at our Dulles

facility.

(Left) Ted Williamson welcomes the dealer personnel and the Eaton trainers.

We had 31 dealer personnel and 2 Eaton instructors. The Dealer TC’s and trainers are to assist with any initial repairs that might need taken care of on the first trucks for warranty administration.

(Right) John Bourdo, one of the Eaton instructors, covering repair procedures on the Eaton manual transmissions which are one of the transmission options for the CT660. The group had classroom and lab time to get familiarized with the Eaton products.

Starting in June, Alban is hosting the training for the truck technicians that will handle the warranty repairs for Eaton components. The training will consist of 2 week-long sessions covering the transmissions (both manual and Eaton Roadranger), drivelines, and differentials. As of this date, we have hosted two of the Week I sessions and one of the Week II sessions. Each week there can be a maximum of 15 technicians. Alban will host a total of five Week I sessions and five Week II sessions. So far Alban has had a very good showing and participation from

our neighboring dealerships as well as our own internal technicians.

As a continuation of the support of the CT660 training, Alban will be conducting 10 week-long classes for the Core Component Training for the 14 dealerships and Alban’s internal technicians. This training will cover the CT11 and CT13 engine. The CT31 Transmission is a Caterpillar- built automatic transmission with electrical circuits. Cat will supply Alban with a Runnable engine, a tear-down engine, a CT31 and electrical training board to conduct this training. The hope is to have trained 150 technicians over the next year. Each class can have a maximum of nine technicians in order to ensure enough hands of time in the labs. Conducting this training will be Jess Denning, one of our truck engine trainers and Brian Orndorff, our earthmoving trainer. Jess has been training our TEPS dealers and internal Truck Technicians on the Cat On-Highway Trucks Engines and ACERT technology. Brian came to Alban with over 10 years of training for Swift Motor Freight where he was responsible

for bumper-to-bumper training for all the Swift repair facilities east of the Mississippi. This is an excellent opportunity for Alban to perform outside training to help offset our internal training cost. We will also be hosting a training session for the dealer trainers for Meritor, Hendrickson and Bendix which will be held this winter.****

New Product Training

D6T Update: Alban conducted 5 classes for the new D6T which has an improved cab, powertrain changes and the Tier 4 Interim Emissions changes. The class was 3 days in length in which we covered the Operator Compartment and Power Train changes.

Teir 4 Interim Emission Changes: We had a total of 30 technicians and TCs attend the class at Myersville. Of course

the major change was the Tier 4 Emissions on the C9.3 Engine. The class was taught by both Karl Quinn and Brian Orndorff. Brian covered the emissions and Karl covered the changes to the D6T and both worked on the labs for troubleshooting the emissions.

(Left) You see the engine compartment on the left side of the machine with the Clean Emissions Module (CEM) sitting on top of the engine. This engine requires the usage of Ultra low sulfur and Ultra Low Sulfur engine

oil. It does offer a little more challenge to work on top of the engine, but the CEM can be removed as a module to gain access to the top of the engine.

(Right) is the right side of the engine compartment where you can see the ARD head which is the portion of the emissions which generates a high temperature to clean the Diesel Particulate Filter to change the soot to ash. The exhaust of these machines is clean and you no longer see smoke of any kind coming from the exhausts. Tier 4 Interim Training: besides the 30 technicians and TC’s taking the D6T training with the emissions, we also held another class utilizing an excavator with the Tier 4 Interim Emissions and were able to get 7 additional technicians. We also held a class for our foremen in which 5 of the foremen were able to attend.

In this picture (right) you see Eric Wilson of Edgewood troubleshooting the Tier 4 Interim Emissions on the excavator used for class. The Emissions portion of the class was two days long and the better portion of the second day was utilized for troubleshooting where the Technicians had to diagnose problems that were put into the machine.

The 336E offers many changes to the engine compartment with the addition of the Tier 4 Interim Emissions, and also many changes to the control valves and implement system. In this class, we concentrated on the implements and control valves since the emissions were covered the first part of the week. We had 7 Field Technicians in the class and at (Right) you see Brian Orndorff

The class was well received and it is hopefully the first of many to come this winter.*****

Elkridge AdditionWe added another engine to our Runnable Fleet at our Elkridge Facility. We were able to acquire a 3508 from Earthmoving that is equipped with an EUI fuel system. This is a great addition to our Training Department.

The 3500 series engine is the bread and butter to the Power Generation and Industrial Engine Group, and it is also utilized in the 777 Off-Highway Truck and the 992 Wheel Loader. Recently, it has been replaced by the C32 in the 777 and 992. There are still a lot of 3500’s in our territory and will be for a long time.

We have not been able to do this training in-house until now. We are looking forward to start training with the unit this winter. This project offered many challenges and fabrications time to get it to work. Brian Orndorff fabricated the engine stand. Walt Chrysam and Jess Denning set the unit up and fabricated the cooling and exhaust system and then did the pumping for the fuel system and wiring to make the unit run.

(Right) You see the exhaust system that was fabricated and the cooling system utilizing electric fans like you would see in a house or room for moving air.The exhaust and cooling system offered the most challenge but both Jess and Walt accepted it and did a fantastic job. Besides using the engine for system operation training, we will now be able to perform diagnostics on the engine too.

You will notice that when the unit is not in operation, the bay door can close and the unit’s exhaust has a clean look at exiting the bay. This allows the garage door to open and close easily.

The Cooling system utilizes the radiator out of a 777 Off Highway truck. Below you can see the ducting of the air for the cooling and the exhaust going out above the radiator.

We are excited to have this addition to the training department. It will help all the technicians by allowing this training to be taught in-house. Thanks to Brian, Jess and Walt for all their hard work.

2nd Annual Alban Pride and Polish Truck Show

Alban hosted two Excavation Seminars in July (July 20th at Upper Marlboro and July 21st at Pulaski). Rob Miller led a great team to success in informing our customers about TIER 4, bonus depreciation & asset management, safety (SAFETY.CAT.COM), fleet production & cost analysis, and Product Link / Vision Link. Rob Miller said “we are very pleased to have the opportunity to show our customers the 336E TIER4 as well as the 329DL and 321D LCR Cat Excavators. Hopefully the machine walk arounds gave them valuable insights into the new features and benefits these updated machines provide.”These events were very successful as we have linked the sale of two 336E’s, three 336E demos and pending sales of

two 336E’s directly to these seminars.A special thanks to the teamwork of various departments to get these seminars accomplished. -Allen Shock

Alban CAT Power Systems - A letter of Thanks from Jonathan Caldwell

As a salesman for the engine rental department for almost 10 years now, most of you would agree that I’m never at a loss for words or suggestions. I believe hard work should be recognized and is definitely appreciated. What our team has accomplished in the past 7 days could only be defined as leaving me speechless. I want you all to know exactly what you have accomplished. Since July 18th our team has checked out, sourced, delivered, installed, maintained and fueled 2100 tons of air cooled chillers,160 tons of DX units,3000lf of chilled water lines,10000 lf of wire,7000 kW of power modules.

This is just the iron, this does not mention the duct work, the ramps, the fuel line and fuel, the service, the man power, and last but not least, the professionalism of a team who has obviously a passion for what they do and who they do it for. We had multiple situations where in the middle of the project requirements changed and we had to react, add equipment, change equipment or simply realize that we may have just busted our butts for two hours for nothing. The above mentioned efforts don’t even include the work that was required or performed from our other salesmen who added to the growing task with their orders. I want you all to know that your efforts and ethic haven’t gone unnoticed and have earned our team respect and business that is unmatchable by our competition.

There are many things as a salesman that allows him to keep the customers coming back; the most important is his team. Your efforts are directly responsible for our success and you should be proud. I would like to especially thank our rental service department; many of you have stood right next to me for 30 to 40 to 50 hours straight getting it done. Unbelievable!! Your efforts have awarded us the same statement from Amazon, WE Bowers, and Power solutions, which I have heard from the VP level to the site contacts “We will never rent another piece of equipment from any company except Alban Cat”.

Congratulations and thank you greatly!!

The Used Equipment Department is made up of eight hard working individuals who as a team are very dedicated and successful in this side of the business. The department is led by John Alexander, Used Equipment Manager, who manages the day to day operations of the department and also handles appraisals, purchasing at auctions, and sales to key customer accounts. Harry Hall, Assistant Used Equipment Manager, is responsible for overseeing international sales, appraising equipment and being a demo operator amongst a host of other day to day responsibilities. Dana Deese, Used Equipment Administrator, offers full support and assistance to the department’s day to day activities. Donnie Tomanek is the Annapolis Junction Used Equipment Shop Supervisor. Ray Soboleski and Mike Kreidler are the Used Equipment Shop Technicians at our Annapolis Junction location. Dave Kinzer works out of Myersville and serves as an equipment appraiser and demo operator. The newest member to the group is Tim Reinhart who will be handling Used Equipment Sales as well as his current job of Used Equipment Sales for Alban CAT Power Systems.

A major goal is to increase used equipment sales both inside our territory and reach out to the global market. By having a dedicated used equipment shop at Annapolis Junction, Alban feels we can achieve our goal by leveraging the dealership and capturing sales from competitors that cannot offer what Alban can. With increased sales of used equipment, our field population will grow, leading to increased parts and service opportunity. Added revenue in parts and service will make the dealership stronger and more profitable going forward. In the past, equipment that would normally be wholesaled can now be available to the third

tier user. With a used equipment shop, there can be closer monitoring of cost and better utilization of dollars put in machines to achieve a better finished product.

With new emission regulations being federally mandated on new equipment, customers will be seeking used pre-Tier IV machines to fill their needs when possible. Used equipment will be in greater demand in the future which translates into higher values and increased sales opportunity. To be a more serious player in the used equipment market, Alban must capitalize on its reputation as the number one supplier of construction equipment in the area.

John Alexander believes we can jump ahead of all the competition by restructuring the way we prep and market used equipment. Having a dedicated used equipment shop

will increase our market share and build a stronger, more diversified dealership. One could look at the future as a cloud of uncertainty…..we should look at it as an exciting new challenge.

John and his group are taking on a new exciting challenge, to say the least. Our Annapolis Junction location in addition to being a Rental Store and Reman Center is now a centrally located fully dedicated Used Equipment location. AJ will house all of Alban’s used equipment. This strong effort to increase the role of Used Equipment

within Alban was proved by the more than 280 pieces of used equipment that have been purchased since January of this year; most of which have been sold or rented. John, Harry and Dana will continue to work out of Baltimore (8531 Pulaski Hwy).

In Territory Sales

With the central location of AJ, salesmen can bring customers in to view all used equipment in one place. This will increase salesmen’s productivity rather than driving to multiple locations to view equipment. The customer can also see the workings of the used equipment shop and how we prep machines for sale. This should increase the customer’s comfort level in purchasing a used piece of equipment. In the end the customer will have a more informed decision on selection and process of purchasing used equipment from Alban.

Global Market Sales

Annapolis Junction’s close proximity to both an international airport and world servicing sea ports can help increase our sales in the global market. Potential customers can fly in and inspect machines all in one location and see our process of making used equipment sales ready. Our goal once again is that they leave with peace of mind and a more informed decision on their purchase.

Cat Certified Rebuilt Machines

We have, to date, done several Cat Certified Powertrain Rebuilds to various machines. Most of these machines have been the larger machines that would be associated with large mining type application. At the present time, our Myersville branch is in the process of such a rebuild to a D10R. Once this has been completed, we will update everyone with pictures of the finished product.

Used Equipment is a very valuable area of business for Alban and we are making every effort to help it become as successful as possible. If you have any leads, please be sure to take advantage of the Team Alban C-Note program and help yourself and Alban become more profitable! Check the bottom of the page on the Alban Intranet for more details.

1. What is the legal department?

Alban’s legal department serves as inside counsel to the company and performs many functions including:(a) Review and negotiation of lease and sales agreements, contracts with customers, vendors, and business partners; Review of daily and weekly legal news, statutes, regulations, and other legal resources, rulings, and interpretations to help ensure the company’s compliance with current requirements (such as OSHA, employment, transportation, Internal Revenue Service, Department of Labor, etc.) and adapt to changes in these requirements as they occur;(b) Update the executive team on changes in the law impacting the business and assist with formulating policies consistent with these rules and changes;(c) Educate managers about legal employment and safety requirements;(d) Maintain a presence and attend meetings with agency representatives and private organizations to share knowledge and develop resources and contacts;(e) Resolve disputes whenever possible to avoid costly litigation;(f) Represent the company in dealing with government agencies to respond to audits, enforcement letters, inquiries and a variety of other matters;(g) Provide guidance and interpretation on the company’s benefit plan provisions and its insurance policies;(h) Determine when to employ outside counsel and act as liaison with such counsel to manage litigation when it is unavoidable.(i) Maintain facility security clearance and individual clearances as required to perform work. This involves ongoing training, meetings, briefings, documentation, communication with government agencies and satisfactory completion of annual audits.(j) Manage government contract interpretation and

compliance(k) Manage and advise corporate officers and managers concerning licensing and zoning issues

2. How much time does contract review take?

Contracts can be anywhere from a page long to several hundred

pages depending upon the work involved, the customer’s requirements, and the legal requirements for the job so the review time varies a great deal. After the contract is reviewed, terms are negotiated with the customer. The negotiation process time depends on the customer’s response time and how many conversations it takes to arrive at agreeable terms. Alban’s legal team has averaged more than 100 contracts under negotiation each week

since the end of last year in addition to their other work.

3. Who is in charge of the legal department?

The legal department is under the direction of Donna Shopulski, Alban’s General Counsel , Vice President and Facility Security Officer; Jennifer Keyser is Alban’s Assistant General Counsel

. Colleen Conway is Contract Administrator and Assistant Facility Security Officer.

4. What other departments does Alban’s legal department work with? Alban’s legal department works with all other corporate departments, advising on workplace policies such as safety, reviewing customer or vendor contracts, or consulting on a variety of issues.

5. Why would a lawyer work at Alban instead of in a law firm?

Lawyers work in many environments outside of private law firms. Donna and Jen both practiced law in a large private law firm environment for a number of years before coming to Alban. After many years of doing the same type of work (Donna in corporate business and tax shelter work and Jen in employment litigation), both decided to leave the large law firm environment for an “in-house” practice in order to expand their knowledge and more actively participate in the everyday activities of a business. (By the way, Colleen also worked as a research assistant in a large law firm (Donna’s first law firm) for years before coming to work at Alban).

It is with a sense of pride that I tell people that I worked there, and believe me when I say that I hold Buck, Jay and Jamie in the highest regard.”

There are many fond memories of his years with the company. Once, he returned from vacation and found his office had been moved! Another time, he was changing the water bottle, and the full bottle slipped out of his hands. The water bottle bounced down with the spout facing up, and Frank received a face full of water and a wet shirt and tie. Frank recalls how much the people in the Accounting Department really seemed to enjoy that one. The best memories for Frank are of the wonderful people with whom he worked, became friends with, and from those he learned from.

Frank always wanted to teach, and he feels fortunate that Notre Dame of Maryland University hired him to teach Managerial Accounting for the spring semester of 2004. He now teaches a graduate course at Notre Dame for people who did not study accounting as an undergraduate. In the spring semester of 2006, he began teaching at Loyola University Maryland. The full-time accounting professor at Notre Dame recommended him to Loyola and gave him a pretty good endorsement. So good, in fact, that he was actually hired over the phone. Frank teaches Financial and Managerial Accounting at Loyola to sophomores (about 20 years old). He has received a lot of great evaluations from the students, but you can’t please everyone. One student said that the main strength of the course was that classes were only 50 minutes long. Frank says the Loyola students keep him feeling young!

Frank brings his experiences at Alban to the classroom. The students seem to appreciate hearing how things are done “in the real world”. Also, he wants them to know that if they major in accounting, they won’t simply end up “crunching numbers”. He tells them that besides being in charge of the accounting department, his duties involved working with bankers, attorneys, benefit consultants, insurance agents, and, of course, with the managers of Alban’s operating departments. It wasn’t all debits and credits by a long shot.

The Izzo Family is doing well, Frank is happy to report. Frank and his wonderful wife, Barbara, will celebrate their 43rd wedding anniversary in September. “I think

that the secret to our happy marriage is that I always get the last words, which is usually ‘Yes, dear’”, Frank said. Vince is a Revenue Agent with the IRS in Baltimore. He likes having considerable independence in his job in decision-making and in setting his own schedule. Millie still teaches at Martin Boulevard Elementary, and she has been there since she graduated from Loyola. Frank recalls how the family took his older granddaughter, Katie, for a visit to Stevenson University, and a rising senior saw Millie and said hello. Millie had taught the young lady in the fifth grade, 11 years ago. Katie is a senior at Patterson Mill High School and besides Stevenson, she has visited Loyola, Mt. St. Mary’s, and McDaniel colleges. Meghan

will be a freshman at Patterson Mill in the fall and Christopher will be in the fifth grade at Ring Factory Elementary School. Millie, her husband Ron, and the kids live across the street from Frank, and they do a lot of things together. Barbara and Frank help take the children to practices, etc. Sometimes the three grandchildren are going in three different directions. Winston, the family dog (Welsh Terrier), is now 9 years old and shares his birthday with Frank and Barbara’s wedding anniversary. [See a picture of Winston in this issue’s edition of “Pets of Our Lives”.]

Since retiring, Barbara and Frank have gone on some nice trips. They’ve been to Nova Scotia, Niagara Falls, Vermont, Tennessee, Disney World and on a Disney cruise, and to some wonderful inns in Virginia and North Carolina. Last July (2010), the whole family went to Italy, and had a great time despite the high temperatures there. The family went on a tour and visited Rome, Florence, Venice, Lake Maggiore, Assisi, Sorrento and some other beautiful places. They broke away from the tour for one day and visited Frank’s father’s family in Santa Maria di Castellabate, which is a few hours south of Sorrento. It brings joy to Frank knowing that the grandchildren will always remember that trip. Now, Meghan wants to get married at Lake Maggiore!

Vince and Frank still go to about a dozen Orioles games each year. They have had a 13 game plan since 1987, and he figures they must be optimists if they are still rooting for the Orioles. Well, either that or masochists!

Frank still keeps in touch with some Alban employees and alumni, and he also enjoys visiting once in a while. He is looking forward to the resumption of the Green and Gold dinners.

Frank would love to hear from you! His email address is [email protected].

emma and velvet conway were both rescued kittens. velvet, in black, was rescued when she was only 3 days old in the woods all alone. how she survived without her mother is a miracle but apparently the litter was thrown into the woods and velvet was the lone survivor. A kind soul found her on the side of the road and was able to catch her and took her to Pet smart and i adopted her immediately. velvet hid under my bed and would come out to eat and drink while i was at work, she slept under my bed and wanted no human contact. After three weeks of no contact i went to Pet smart and adopted emma. All of emma’s brothers and sisters had been adopted and she was the only one left. As soon as emma came into the house, velvet came out and they became fast friends. This photo was taken as they watched their first snow and if you look closely you can see that even their tails are crossed. The first time i touched velvet i knew her name. emma, with green eyes and the attitude of a true irish woman was named after the emerald isles. They have both been a blessing and comfort in my life. They are always in the window waiting for me to come home and sometimes they eat better than i do. After having dogs all of my life i never thought two kittens would enrich me but they have stolen my heart. Adopt a Pet - it is a true reward!
