He starred opposite David Bowie in “Merry Christmas, Mr. Law- rence” in 1983, as well as scoring the music for the film. Sakamoto also won an Oscar, shared with David Byrne and Cong Su, for the original score of Bernardo Bertolucci’s “The Last Emperor” (1987). His life and artistry are the subject of a new documentary, “Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda,” which pre- miered earlier this month at the Venice Film Festival. TIFF runs from Oct. 25 to Nov. 3. New release date “A STAR Is Born,” which Brad- ley Cooper directed and stars in with Lady Gaga, is moving up from its previous berth of Sept. 28, 2018, to May 18, 2018. That takes it out of the fall season, the traditional ground for more serious fare. The movie, based on the 1937 film starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, centers on a movie star who helps an aspir- ing young actress find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral. ‘A Christmas Story’ MATTHEW BRODERICK, a two-time Tony winner, has been tapped to serve as the narrator in Fox’s “A Christmas Story” live musical. Broderick steps up to the microphone previously held by Jean Shepherd, the narrator and adult Ralphie Parker in the 1983 classic. Based on the short stories of Midwestern humorist Shepherd, the musical is set in the 1940s, when all 9-year-old Ralphie wants for Christmas is a Red Ryder BB gun. Mom-to-be KYLIE JENNER is pregnant, People reported. The 20-year- old reality star and business mogul is due in February. (SD-Agencies) At a Glance Riverdale star in car crash after working 16-hour day K.J. APA, star of “Riverdale,” was involved in a late-night car crash last week after a gruel- ing 16-hour work day outside Vancouver, prompting the cast and crew of the hit CW show to demand better safety protec- tions during production. Apa, 20, who plays Archie in the Warner Bros.-produced Archie Comics adaptation, apparently fell asleep driving the 45-minute trip home after midnight. He was taken to a local hospital for observation and later discharged without serious injuries. His car, how- ever, didn’t fare as well. The passenger side was apparently destroyed after striking a light pole, and the vehicle was ren- dered inoperable. The crash has ignited a firestorm of protest on the “Riverdale” set. The show rou- tinely requires shoots that last until the early morning hours, and the cast and crew are not provided transportation to and from the set. Cole Sprouse, who co-stars as Archie’s pal Jughead and is one of Apa’s close friends, had apparently planned to be in the car as well that night but changed plans at the last minute. Sprouse, a leader of sorts of the actors on the show, has asked that the Greg Ber- lanti-produced series provide transportation to castmembers working late hours. A call between representatives for the actors and Warner Bros. executives is being set for Friday to discuss the issue, according to sources. SAG-AFTRA announced Thursday afternoon that the union would investigate the set in Vancouver following the dangerous crash. “This is an extremely troubling situation and we are deeply concerned about the safety of performers on the ‘Riverdale’ set,” the state- ment read. WBTV’s policy is that actors are responsible for their own transportation to and from set, particularly when production is shooting outside the United States. The studio, which makes several shows in Van- couver, declined to comment, but a source notes that actors are told they can call a taxi or stay in a hotel near a set on the studio’s dime if they feel it is unsafe to drive. (SD-Agencies) THE production firm behind children’s show “Maya the Bee,” which streams in the United States on Netflix, has apologized for an episode of the animated series that included a drawing of a penis in the back- ground. “An absolutely inappropri- ate image has been discovered in a four-second fly-by scene in one episode of the total of 78 episodes of the series,” said production group Studio 100 in a statement Friday. “The origin of this image obviously results from a very bad joke from one of the 150 artists working on the production.” The image of a crudely-drawn penis was discovered by some U.S. viewers, who took screen shots of the offending scenes and posted them on social media. In a Facebook post that has since been removed, a mother, Chey Robinson, first brought attention to the image (which appears on the side of a rock in the show), reportedly writ- ing, “Smh [shaking my head], please be mindful of what your kids are watching. I did not edit any images whatsoever, this is ‘Maya the Bee,’ season one, episode 35.” Netflix, which does not pro- duce the show but licenses it for the United States, has since pulled the episode of the show with the image in it. “This is indeed unaccept- able to the Studio 100 Group as owner of the brand and all its partners and doesn’t reflect the quality of its work and its values,” the company’s state- ment continues. “Legal action has already been started. Studio 100 very much regrets this incident and would like to offer its sincere apologies to all ‘Maya the Bee’ fans. At the same time the company is taking all suitable technical measures to remedy the situation.” “Maya the Bee” is a Euro- pean cartoon based on 1912 children’s book by German writer Waldemar Bonsels. The story of a rebellious young bee named Maya who leaves her hive to discover the beauty and mysteries of nature has been adapted several times for television and film. He was 68. “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Charles Bradley. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” a statement read on Bradley’s Facebook account. “Mr. Bradley was truly grate- ful for all the love he’s received from his fans and we hope his message of love is remem- bered and carried on,” it reads. “Thank you for your thoughts and prayers during this dif- ficult time.” Bradley’s singing career blos- somed late in life and his onstage persona, coupled with his boom- ing voice, drew comparisons to the “Godfather of Soul” James Brown. Bradley was discovered at 60, and released his debut album, “Changes,” two years later. Nicknamed the “Scream- ing Eagle,” Bradley was known for hits like “Changes,” “The World (Is Going Up in Flames)” and “Heartaches and Pain.” His performance on “CBS This Morning: Saturday” last year received an Emmy nomi- nation for Outstanding On- Camera Musical Performance in a Daytime Program. Bradley was born in Gaines- ville, Florida, on Nov. 5 in 1948. He moved to Brooklyn when he was 8. Through his first five decades, Bradley drifted between jobs, working as a short order cook in Maine, at a hospital for the mentally ill in New York and much more. He was in his 50s when he landed back in Brooklyn. His love for the blues began back in 1962 when his sister brought him to see Brown at Harlem’s Apollo Theater. “That’s what started it ‘cause I always liked the blues, but see, James Brown is the one who put rhythm in the blues. And that’s what made it funky. And I said, ‘Now that’s what I want to be’.” In 2011, he was doing a tribute show for Brown in Brooklyn’s Essence Bar when he was spot- ted by Daptone Records, who paired him with producer Tom Brennick. Bradley said Brennick helped make his voice “power- ful” and he started feeling the power in his voice. Earlier this month, Bradley was forced to cancel his tour after his cancer had returned and spread to his liver. (SD-Agencies) Charles Bradley Charles Bradley K.J.
