CONTACT! Volume 6 Number 9 September 2017 www.kanatabr638.ca President’s Report Welcome back, everyone. I hope each of you had a good summer and are ready to get back into the swing of things! Preparations and planning for fall activities and Kanata legion growth are well underway focusing on increasing Kanata Legion awareness and participation in the community and increasing membership and improving retention to better serve and support our veterans, community and youth, and to do our duty to remember the fallen. As it is important not to miss opportunities as we strive to meet these goals, I encourage all members for their support whether it be coming out to events, attending general meetings, memorial events, volunteering, providing feedback, ideas and contacts; every contribution big or small makes a difference. Please do not hesitate to approach me or any of the executive with your suggestions, questions, etc. The Kanata Legion is your legion. Each member has a say and a vote, particularly at general meetings. A reminder, general meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. except the months of December, February, July and August. I would be remiss if I did not make mention of the Ladies’ Auxiliary, an organization that has served the Kanata Legion as its right arm and supported the Kanata Legion for almost 25 years in many ways. The Ladies’ Auxiliary of Branch #638 of the Royal Canadian Legion welcomes new members! As a means of showing the branch’s appreciation of the Ladies’ Auxiliary’s support, the branch hosts an annual appreciation dinner for the ladies. I am very pleased to report that the Kanata Legion’s 10th annual Ladies’ Auxiliary Appreciation dinner held September 6 was the best ever! The ladies were appreciative and very im- pressed with the meal and the presentation; two main menu choices were roast beef and salmon. Special thanks to the following for making this year’s appreciation dinner the success it was: cooks Gaëtan Chartier, Garth Lee; kitchen assistant, George Pollock; server/clearer, Gerry Dore; bar tender and server/ clearer, Mark Hunter; dishwasher, George Royle; hall set up and table setting, Helen McKiernan and Bob Thomson. I attended the Zone G6 fall council meeting on Sunday, September 10, held at Branch #174, Arnprior. A summary report is available upon request. Duty to remember Special thanks to Rev. Canon Dr. Bill Prentice, Sgt. @ Arms, Bob Thomson, the Colour Party; Brenda Grant, bag pipes; and John Weiss, trumpet; Peter Wilkins, Naval Prayer, for their participation at the legion tributes held for comrade Bill Bradley on August 12 and for comrade Arthur (Rusty) Harrison held September 16. Many thanks to all those who attended.

President’s Report

Welcome back, everyone.

I am very pleased to report that the Kanata Legion’s 10th annual Ladies’

Auxiliary Appreciation dinner held September 6 was the best ever! The ladies were appreciative and very im-pressed with the meal and the presentation; two main menu choices were roast beef and salmon. Many thanks to all those who attended.

Community affiliations and awareness On August 26, I represented Branch #638 at the Kanata/ Stittsville Westenders Civitan Club’s Charter Ceremony. Attended a breakfast with Mayor, Jim Watson, and Kanata North Ward Councillor, Marianne Wilkinson, on August 29 representing the Kanata Legion as one of eight Kanata North community leaders. A brief report is available upon request. On Friday, September 8, it was a privilege to present on behalf of Branch #638 an Appreciation Certificate to Kanata South Ward Councillor, Allan Hubley, and his team for their volunteer work at our Friday’s Fish ‘N Chips during the past few years. On Monday, September 11, I was privileged to present an Appreciation Certification to the Kanata Kozy Quilters for their generous donation of a Canadian Maple Leaf quilt used to raise money for the Ottawa Service Bureau – Homeless Veterans. Wednesday, September 20, at the general meeting, privileged to present an Appreciation Certificate to Jessica Cunha, reporter, and the Kanata Kourier Standard local paper, for the tremendous support and coverage during the past many years. Thursday, September 21, presented a $272 cheque to the Kanata/Stittsville Westenders Civitan Club as a result of the Chef’s Night Out chicken dinner organized by the Kanata Legion. Respectfully submitted,

Lorraine Lapensée

From the First Vice

I would like to congratulate comrade Moira Green and her team for a very successful Dieppe Memorial service at our cenotaph. I suggest that the format used on that occasion be recorded and used as a guide for similar services. Having noticed low attendance by branch members at the Dieppe service and at other services for deceased members held at the branch, I have asked our Padre, Reverend Cannon Dr. William Prentice, to write an article on this subject for insertion in the CONTACT! newsletter. The Space Task Force project is moving forward as most of those with items in the storage areas have taken the initiative to organize their space. The next step is for everyone to inventory their items and put the list indicating the storage area number in my box at the office. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Training and Organizational Development Treasurer, comrade George Pollock, presented a short training session at the Executive meeting on the subject of financials related to branch functions. If anyone has any questions please speak directly with George. Did You Know? No motion pictures or video tape recordings for public viewing in any theatre or cinema or on television, or media photography, which includes evidence of alcoholic beverage, shall be made by any person inside the legion’s licensed premises. From the Second Vice … next month, hopefully!

From the Third Vice Legion Week was celebrated with a full schedule, which kicked-off with the Ruckers arrival at our branch on September 17 and concluded with a cozy turnout at a potluck and movie on the Friday. Thank you to everyone who attended the many events throughout Legion Week. Planning is under way by The Ways and Means Committee for the Spooktober Fest (Oktoberfest and Halloween combined) event on October 21. Comrade Brenda Grant is revving up with Youth Education Poster and Literary submissions and judging with the Awards Ceremony scheduled for January 2018. Comrade Sue McLean and her team would welcome more helping hands in the efforts of Veterans Comforts delivery. The Poppy Campaign is in sight. Please remember to contribute your time at the poppy tables. Comrade Moira Green and her table captains will be contacting you soon. Poppy Trust Funds have been dispersed and allocated for the current Poppy Trust year. Well done, comrade Doug Rowland. Eight students were awarded Branch Bursaries from our Legion. Thank you to comrade Angie Jacklin and the Bursary Committee.

From the Membership Desk

I am happy to report that approximately 33% of our members have renewed for 2018. The Early Bird campaign continues until the November 30 at the low, low price of $55. Payment can be made by cash, cheque payable to RCL Kanata Br. 638 or Debit/Credit machine. Dues can be mailed or dropped off at the Legion. I would ask that they be placed in the envelope provided or clearly be marked “membership.” This year the membership cards are plastic, similar to a credit card. The idea is to cut down on costs. In the following years, you will be issued a sticker to place on the back of your card. Changes to Your Contact Information Our goal is to maintain and improve the communication between our members and the legion. If you have moved, changed your phone number or email address, could you please contact us. I can be reached at 613-832-4127 or [email protected] Also, you can contact the Kanata Legion at [email protected] or 613-591-5570. NEW: You can manage your own records online. Attached to the new cards are instructions on how to set up and register online. This allows the registered user to pay online, change address, phone and email information and view your status.

* * CARDS CAN BE PICKED UP FROM THE BAR * * Remember ~ after NOVEMBER 30 dues go back to $60. Yours in Comradeship Brenda Grant

NOTE - Cabela's is a NEW VENUE. It is a high-end sporting, hunting, fishing store at the Tanger outlet centre. George needs staff for this area. Please contact George at the above info if you can help him out. We do realise that many are committed to their usual spots; however, it could prove to be a lucrative venue for our campaign and the staff are very willing to have us there.

When you receive a call to do a Poppy shift kindly return that call as soon as you can. Remember that Poppy duty is not an option but an activity that you as a member have taken a solemn oath to perform. If you are disabled and physically unable to participate of course you are excused. I will be happy to address any questions etc. regarding the campaign.

Veterans’ Comforts

I have been told that several people are unfamiliar with the Veterans’ Comforts programme that each branch is expected to operate. Possibly that is because the Ladies Auxiliary has always handled this in the past at Branch 638. They did this quietly and competently, and many branch members may be unaware of this being done. Three years ago, our branch decided to have the regular members take over. L.A. and branch members now work together on this task. And as the saying goes “Many hands make light work.” We have increased our visits to well over 100 people. This year the total is 145. These people include veterans, their spouses (family), and widows or widowers of veterans. These are the persons that the RCL is mandated to care for. Kanata seems to have more than its fair share of retirement and long-term care homes. We serve not only our own branch members, but other veterans living in our community. The list of personal comforts that we are advised to purchase is sadly out of date, so your committee decides on what to give based on the budget set by the Poppy Trust committee. Dollar amounts can vary according to the success of the Poppy Campaign. It is not so much the content of the “gift” or how much we spend on it, it is the actual visit to these people that makes the biggest impact! So if you enjoy people and want to help with these visits, it is not too late to volunteer. And if you aren’t available this fall, we will be doing this again in late spring. This is because of the necessity of aligning the budgets and visits with the Poppy Trust fiscal year. Contact Sue McLean at 613-291-1038 or [email protected]

Ways and Means Committee

Legion Week at Branch #638 September 17 - 23, 2017 At the 2017 Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Convention in London Ontario, President Elect Sharon McKeown put a motion on the floor to support “Project Invictus” a group of Canadian athletes that were going to be allowed to participate in the Canadian National Track & Field Championships in Ottawa in July 2017 under the “PARA” program as they recognized PTSD.

The floor of the convention unanimously supported sponsoring these athletes. As no medals were going to be awarded in this event – Natacha Dupuis (Invictus Team Canada co-captain) guest speaker at the Provincial Convention created a beautiful medal (coin) to honour those athletes we sponsored and as a token of their participation. They also took a group photo – attempting to show the “arms” of their shirts where the LEGION POPPY SWISH and ONTARIO COMMAND were printed.

Kanata Legion hosts “Project Invictus” Framed photo-graph and coin presentation on Sunday, September 17, 2017. Natacha Dupuis presented a framed photograph of the group of Canadian athletes with one of these coins inserted into the frame to Sharon McKeown, Provincial President and Garry Pond, Provincial 1st Vice President as thanks to Ontario Command from the entire group.

Ontario Command President Sharron Mc Keown accepts an Invictus Games Medal from Natasha Dupuis Team Canada Co Captain Invictus Games. Comrade Garry Pond 1st V P Br 192 Carleton Place looks on.

ROAD TO RECOVERY – Veterans BBQ fundraiser (Kanata Legion’s kick-off event to legion week) On September 17, the Kanata Legion hosted a BBQ in support of the Road to Recovery Operation: Leave the Streets Behind fundraiser. On September 14, a mixed group of five civilian and service members stepped off

from the Petawawa Legion to undertake a 150-km. weighted ruck march to honour our Nation’s 150th birthday and those that have sacrificed for it, namely our veterans, police and first responders. Ruck 2 Remember, the organization that put on this event, is a not for profit organization that is in its 4th year raising funds and awareness for issues facing Veterans. The R2R team stopped over at the Cobden Legion, the Renfrew Legion, the Arnprior Legion and ending their 150-km march at the Kanata Legion.

The Kanata Legion put on a big welcome with the Highland Mist Pipe Band playing outside at the front of the legion and many guests cheering as the ruckers arrived! In addition to our very special guests, the ruckers, were special guests: Provincial President, Sharon McKeown, Provincial 1st Vice President, Garry Pond, Provincial Chairman, Ron Goebel and his wife, Barbara, Provincial Public Relations, Carolyn McCaul and her husband, John. District Commander, Dave Cormier and his wife, Connie, #1 Deputy District Commander, Joel Van Snick and Zone G6 Commander, Bob Atkinson.

Reverend Canon Dr. William Prentice and his wife, Joyce, were among the guests to support the good cause and Padre Bill said a special grace just before the approximate 60-70 guests enjoyed a delicious BBQ of hamburgers, hot dogs and salads.

Thanks to the donation of the food and the volunteers who put it all together, over $600 was donated by guests and Bridlewood Home Hardware to Operation: Leave the Streets Behind, during that evening. Special thanks to:

• Bridlewood Harvey’s for the donation of the hamburgers, hot dogs and condiments

• Laura’s Independent Grocer for the donation of the beautifully decorated cake;

• Members: Lorraine Lapensée, Tara Jackson Lee, Amanda Robbins, Sheila Taylor for the provision of salads.

Your Kanata Legion also donated $2,000 from the Poppy Trust Fund and $500 from the General Trust fund to Operation: Leave the Streets Behind! Thank you to the Kanata Kourier Standard and Jessica Cunha, reporter for the excellent coverage of this event before, during and after.

Wednesday, September 20. Reporter/Photographer Jessica Cunha from the Kanata Kourier Standard is presented with a certificate of appreciation for her coverage of legion events.

On behalf of the Ways and Means Committee, a big thank you to all those who came out to support this very special event. You helped make a difference in the success it was! A very special big thank you with much appreciation to our volunteers:

The success of this event is also attributed to those who came out to enjoy a delicious dinner and to the following volunteers: Gaëtan Chartier, Brenda Grant, Mark Hunter, George Pollock, Clay Wheaton. Pot luck and a Movie night – September 22, 2017 As always, a pot luck dinner that turned out as good as if it was planned; something from each food category! Although a small turnout it had its advantages i.e. a good seat for everyone and an opportunity to visit with all! Another good movie, Going in Style! Thank you, Tara Jackson Lee, for bartending and loaning the movie!
