As part of the school meeng the Premier’s priories, and in keeping up with the demands of employers, Years 7 & 8 have taken on the challenge of improving their numeracy skills. Our first term has been mostly devoted to tesng, which will enable us to analyse our students’ strength and weaknesses across the scope of the Stage 4 curriculum. Once we have fully analysed our data, we can then begin to teach using a scaffolded approach to learning. In educaon, scaffolding refers to a variety of instruconal techniques used to move students progressively toward stronger understanding and, ulmately, greater independence in the learning process. The term itself offers the relevant descripve metaphor: teachers provide successive levels of temporary support that help students reach higher levels of comprehension and skill acquision that they would not be able to achieve without assistance. Like physical scaffolding, the supporve strategies are incrementally removed when they are no longer needed, and the teacher gradually shiſts more responsibility over the learning process to the student. These students have enthusiascally embraced the concept, which will ulmately help them to reach minimum proficiency in Numeracy, thereby enabling them to successfully access their HSC. Numeracy in Action!

Principal’s News

This week our Year 12 students will be doing their half-yearly exams and on behalf of the students and staff I would like to wish them all the best, may their hard work yield the results they deserve.

The wet weather last week was truly appreciated but produced a few challenges around the school with blocked drains, puddles and waterfalls down stairwells. The students are to be congratulated on their sensible attitude while we dealt with these problems. The wet weather has also required us to postpone our annual Year 7 camp. Although the students were obviously disappointed they are now looking forward to the end of November when they will get to have this unforgettable experience.

Last Friday, the 2017 school plan was finalised and will be published later this week. Parent and community access to the document will be available via our website. With the AGM scheduled for this week’s P&C meeting, our school plan will not be presented until the April meeting.

Last week the school was informed that we will be going through NESA Registration. What this means is that our school has been selected to participate in the 2017 NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) sampling process for the department’s registration. During the visit, inspectors will assess the implementation of the Department’s policies, procedures and processes in relation to a limited sample of registration requirements and look at evidence that would serve to demonstrate these requirements. The three areas to be observed are child protection, student welfare and attendance. This process will occur during week two at the same time as our financial audit.

Year 7 news… Last Wednesday afternoon, in preparation for camp, Year 7 practised putting up and packing away their tents. They did a fabulous job, finishing off just in time before the rain started again!! Unfortunately, due to the rain, camp has had to be postponed until later this year.

Iron & Clay Last Thursday, motivational band ‘Iron + Clay’ visited our school and gave a fantastic performance to all of our students! Performing at schools all over Australia, they address issues such as bullying, drug and alcohol abuse, drink driving and self-esteem. They not only entertain but also give a message of living radically and responsibly. “We are determined to inspire and motivate the youth of this generation to make the right choices, because ‘Destiny is not a matter of chance, it’s a matter of choice’”.

P&C Update

Finally, attached below are the revised menus for The Hub. Lunch specials are available for $5 every day, along with salad bowls, wraps, rolls and sandwiches. Please note that these items must be ordered before 11.30am daily. Daily specials this week are: Monday-Marinated Chicken & Fried Rice, Tuesday-Spaghetti Bolognaise, Wednesday-Honey Mustard Chicken and Rice, Thursday-Meatballs & Salad, and Friday-Hot Dog & Drink.

Western Area Squash Last Monday, Cody Smith, Jamie Austin, Samuel Austin and Lucas Ellis travelled to Cowra to play in the Western Area Squash knockout tournament. They played Cowra and Canobolas during the day. The boys played extremely well and beat Canobolas, however Cowra were too strong and defeated us 3 rubbers to 1. Well done boys on your effort and improvement over the day. Mrs Porter.

Year 7 LOTE Students in Year 7 study mandatory LOTE as part of their ROSA. Students at Canowindra High study French. Their first assessment was a collage entitled "French All Around Us".

Many people are unaware of the origins of sport, food, and cars, yet we experience these in our lives every day. Year 7 students had to research every day items used in Australia to determine if they had a French origin. If the item was French in origin, they could include an image or text as part of their collage.

This task was a personal best task, allowing students to re-submit their assessment if they wished to improve their result. Many of the images were re-submitted.

Encouraging teen confidence at school Many teenagers behave in a carefree manner, but often there can be a fragile self-esteem beneath that adolescent bravado. The good news is, nurturing self-esteem can help your teen develop the confidence and resilience they need to succeed at school. Nurture talents and strengths Succeeding at an activity like sport, music or art can be great for a teen’s self-esteem and confidence. If they succeed at their chosen activity, there’s a good chance they’ll replicate that success at school and make friends too. Genuine praise helps build self-esteem When your teen is congratulated on successes and achievements, no matter how small, it can give their confidence a boost. See errors as opportunities to learn Reassure your teen that setbacks happen. Encourage them to see that, in every error, there is an opportunity to learn and look positively towards learning their next achievement. Teenagers are led by example By acting with confidence and self-assurance, you are modelling behaviours that your teen may pick up. Improved confidence will help with things like public speaking and other interactions. Friends Friends are important esteem-builders. The more your teen brings their school friends home, the more you can get to know them too. Open communication If your teen feels comfortable raising any topic with you-no matter how embarrassing, upsetting or controversial it may be-they’ll be more confident expressing themselves at school. Responsibility makes responsible teenagers Having specific tasks to do and giving you a hand with big jobs can help them build a sense of responsibility and achievement. School Fees School fees are now due and can be paid online, or by cash, cheque or eftpos at the front office. Please note that non-payment of subject fees will affect participation in all non-curriculum based excursions. Year 7 Camp Due to the wet weather, the Year 7 camp has been postponed to Term 4.

Tell Them From Me student feedback survey For the last 2 years our school has participated in a NSW Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. We will participate again in Term 1 and follow up in Term 3. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 20 March and 7 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Monday March 20.
