The changing landscape of the national educational agenda is very high profile at the moment, with the government announcing, in the last week, a number of proposed key changes to the examination system and the curriculum. These changes are not going to have a full impact until 2015 but many of the proposals are likely to start influencing the system immediately and schools across the country will be adjusting to the changes. I therefore feel it important to start to inform you of the gist of the proposals and how

it will affect Willingdon Community School. When Ofsted inspected us last October, they praised the quality of our curriculum, noting how it met the requirements of the National Curriculum and provided for the full range of our students, ensuring that there were progression routes for students of all abilities, interests and talents. Because of our belief in continuing to provide a very broad and relevant curriculum for all our students, including in Key Stage 4, the proposals are unlikely to affect our curriculum model too much.

W e have also

always placed an emphasis on the importance of

encouraging students to study the, so called, EBacc subjects of English, maths, at least 2 sciences, a modern foreign language and either or both of history and geography. The Ebacc is the measure that the government wishes to use as a key measure of a school’s quality, particularly for the more able students considering going to University. Currently we are the highest achieving school in the area with regard to the Ebacc, with over 30% of our students studying for this collection of subjects and with a target of 40% within the next two years. Hence, the proposals are unlikely to impact upon the shape of our curriculum model to any great extent although we will have to adjust to the proposed content changes within each subject area. The detail of those changes is not known yet and will not be introduced until 2015 at the earliest. On the examination front, we are pleased that the Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove MP, has decided to stick with GCSEs

as the basis of the examination system at age 16. We also welcome his proposals to toughen up the system by ensuring that there is consistency between examination boards and introducing a degree of greater academic rigour which focuses on the embedding of a number of core skills and knowledge. As long as the eventual outcome is an examination system that provides for the full range of students, including those that are best suited to a more vocational pathway and those that have the potential to achieve at the very highest of levels, then we will welcome the outcome. Currently, over 40% of our students achieve 3 or more A*/A grades, with over 10% gaining 10 or more top grades; so we are providing for the most able and I feel confident we will be well placed to deliver for them in the new regime, whatever the final outcome. My concern is more with the offer for those for whom a vocational element would be more appropriate. We will participate in the consultation on all the proposals and keep a watchful eye on the direction of travel. Whatever the outcome, we will be well prepared and will keep you informed.

Contact 141 February 2013Willingdon Community School

The one change that is likely to start creeping into the examination system before 2015 and is certainly a change we need to start preparing for from the minute students join the school, is the move to examination results being determined solely by a final examination. No coursework or modular content or controlled assessments. The emphasis is going to be on students learning and mastering a body of knowledge and skills over a period of time and being tested on it at the end of the course. Along with this fundamental change, students will be expected to have deepened their mastery of English grammar, spelling, punctuation and extended writing; be able to do a number of maths’ calculations without the use of a calculator; and

recall large bodies of information. These changes will start to impact on how we teach and test students almost immediately.Change is always a challenge and at the moment we are only aware of the broad outline of the proposals but we are pretty clear about the direction in which they are headed. We shall adjust accordingly and keep you informed as the proposals develop and become established. 2015 is the key date but we have to start changing now.

The 20th annual Eastbourne Young Engineers’ Challenge held at Bedes School

On Friday 25th January 2013, we, four students in Year 7, Nicholas Burton, Lydia Waters, Dylan Penrose and Jess Vinson took part in the Young Engineers Challenge held at Bedes School Eastbourne. There were eighteen other local schools that also took part.

The chosen teams from each school all arrived not knowing what the challenge would be. It was a “think fast on your feet day!”We were introduced to some business men and engineers who had been involved in their own engineering projects. The theme was a cable car across the River Thames in London.

We were then set the task of building two towers both 1 metre high and had to be strong enough to hold a weight of 100g to 2000g representing a cable car. Next we were given some basic equipment including garden sticks which were a variety of length, dried spaghetti, straws, rubber bands and string.

Our team worked for two hours with short breaks to build the towers. We spent some time at the beginning planning for example what shape would be the strongest base to keep the tower up, how we would work in pairs and how we would bind the sticks together. We worked really well as a team.

Later we tested our finished towers. Our towers held 700g of weight. The Mayor was welcomed to help with judging and also the Commanding Officer from 103 Battalion Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

We all received certificates at the end. Whilst we did not win, we felt that we had achieved our goal and enjoyed the day.Thank you for organising and letting us take part.

By Lydia Waters.

On Friday 15th February 2013 our school will once again be supporting 'UNICEF’s Day for Change' and we very much hope that you will join us in supporting this worthwhile, fun and educational event. It is a great opportunity for our students to learn about and raise money for children in other parts of the world.

The idea is very straightforward. In return for a donation of £1 to

help UNICEF’s vital work, your child will be allowed to come to school in MUFTI. By taking part in this important day, we can help support UNICEF’s work, using sport and play to transform the lives of children.

Why are we doing it?

As you know, 2012 was a key year for sports. Sport and the achievements of the world’s top athletes at the London 2012 Games has inspired

Education through Sport

UNICEF’s

schools and children around the world, sport is an effective way of transforming the lives of children and their communities and is of a much wider importance.

Play and sport are not only a fundamental right for children, but also vital elements in their health happiness and well-being. UNICEF is using sport as an effective tool to help achieve goals in health, education, gender equality, HIV and AIDS, child protection and child development.

More than half of Uganda’s population is under the age of 14 and live on less than £1 a day. Poverty, conflict and social stigma mean that many children do not complete their primary education. Children often have to work and live in dangerous conditions. This is wrong.

By taking part in 'Day for Change', we will be helping transform children’s lives through the power of sport.

UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, is the world’s leading organisation working for children and their rights. They work with families, local communities, partners and governments in more than 150 countries to help every child realise their full potential.

UNICEF supports children by providing health care, nutrition and education.

To find out more information about UNICEF, please visit www.unicef.org.uk.

Thank you for your support for this worthwhile and educational day.

Congratulations to the Willingdon U14 badminton team for their excellent performance in the Centre Parcs Sussex Schools Badminton Team Championships on Thursday 31st January which was held at The K2, Crawley. Willingdon were one of eight schools from around the county that had qualified to compete in the finals. Willingdon were drawn in a group with William Parker, St Wilfreds and St Andrews. Willingdon convincingly beat St Wilfreds and St Andrews school 5-0 in the group stages. The final game in the group stage was a tough and close match against William Parker Sports College which they narrowly lost. The team qualified to play Christ’s Hospital Independent School in a 3rd/ 4th place play-off. Willingdon put their disappointment of losing their previous match behind them and won the play-off 4-1 to finish 3rd place.

Congratulations to the Willingdon U13 and U16 table tennis teams for their excellent performances in the Sussex Schools Table Tennis Championships on Wednesday 30th January which was held at St Leonards Academy, Hastings. All players won a number of their group games and closely missed qualification to the knock out stages apart from Solomon Fitzpatrick, Josh Bennett and Jack Bennett who qualified. Solomon Fitzpatrick qualified for the quarter final of the U13 competition after winning all of his five group games but he unfortunately lost in four sets to a regional squad player. Josh and Jack Bennett demonstrated why they are the top players in the county as they were undefeated throughout the whole competition both winning their U13 and U16 finals. They have now qualified to play and represent Sussex Schools in the National Schools Table Tennis Finals 2013.

Our last netball match was more important than the others, if we won then we would make it into the Sussex finals. We played Lewis Priory and even though it was very close they unfortunately won. The team was Kerris Senior, Alex Spillet, Fleur Green, Zoe Maskel, Amy Marchent, Sophie Appleyard, Bethany Russel, Kyah Ovenden , and Lauren Bowls.

The team played really well in some parts of the game, if we had played like this more consistently throughout the game then we would have easily won. We could have improved by staying calm and not panicking if we had no one to pass to straight away. The thing we did much better than the other team was foot work, they got blown up many more times than us therefore we had the advantage for parts of the game. Both teams got tired quickly because the game was longer than an average game, each quarter being eight minutes long.

The attackers were very good at getting the

ball to our end when it was in the centre third, even if it was the other teams centre pass, which led to a good amount of goal scoring opportunities. Unfortunately sometimes, with the pressure high, they missed a few but worked hard to regain possession and got the next ones in. When the ball did get to the other teams shooting end, our defenders worked hard to prevent Lewes scoring. Perhaps they could have been more aggressive but when they did get possession they were quick to get the ball out of the defending end and down the court for the attackers to try and score. Year 8 Netball PlayoffsAfter playing a lively game, Year 8’s netball team experienced their first defeat of the season, loosing their winning title in last week’s (11th Jan) play off match.

The game started off in Willingdon’s favour; energetic and focused, the girls managed to grab the ball and immediately pass it to the Wing Attack (Lucy Worrall) who threw the ball to Centre (Maia Buckthorpe) who got the ball to Goal Attack (Sophie Richardson). Then, between her and the Goal Shooter (Jessica Sidwell) scored the first goal of the game, bringing Willingdon 1-0 up. Later on, with the same set up, the girls took the ball again and it flew through the net.

Unfortunately, after a great start, Lewis also started to get in a few goals, getting

passed the strong defense (Amy Miles, Connie Breach, Hannah Ginno) making it a score of 2-4 by the end of the first half.

Lewis continued to score throughout the next quarter but after switching a few players around, Willingdon fought back and Wing Attack (Erin Mckee) received the ball and passed it to our powerful attack and they scored another, making it 3-4. Later on in the quarter, Lewis came back again and scored more goals. By the end of the third quarter the score was 3-9.

In the last quarter, Lewis managed to get through our defense and scored again, after changing around the positions, our Wing Defense (Summer Pannett) got the ball, passed it on to the Wing Attack (Beatrice Frias Del Rio) who got it to

the Goal Shooter and scored making it 4-9, again towards the end of the quarter Lewis scored some good goals and made the ending score 4-12.

Even though Willingdon lost the play off, coming second in our local area is certainly something to be proud of and we now have something to aim for next year. We’re all looking forward to our next match and hope to get our winning streak back.

"Both teams played exceptionally well but in the end Willingdon's A team came first overall. The

weather was against us the whole time as it was windy and cold, however it didn’t seem to affect our playing too much. We had 5 games to play in total and as time moved on it got colder, but we managed to win each match and come back champions. We worked well as a team which made sure we were all alert and also made sure we were all in a space ready to pass. All of us were very happy after we had finished the games and found that we had won and were glad we did the school and ourselves proud."

"At the start of the tournament we needed to look into our techniques, because we had very poor footwork in our first game. This was soon put right by watching our team mates, and reflecting on our performance. In the end we played brilliantly throughout the tournament. We won our game against Seaford Head and Drew against HCC and the Eastbourne Academy. Overall we came fifth, and I would like to take the opportunity as Captain to say well done to the whole team".

Congratulations to the Year 11 netball team for not only winning their last ever match for the school, but for also never losing a league game, and qualifying for the Sussex Finals each year they have entered.

Despite their numerous other commitments, exams and revision schedules the girls triumphed in the area final against Peacehaven, winning 31 – 7.

After five years of training with

the girls we would like to take the opportunity to wish them every success for the future.

Miss Attrill and Miss Graffham

"On Thursday 31st January we competed in the playoffs against Peacehaven. We began the match at a high standard; we were determined right from the first centre pass. The attacking side of the team began well will Kellie Larkin playing in the centre which controlled the game well. Holly Batchelor was playing WA and was making many interceptions; also Jodie Lindley playing GA was controlling the circle well and was shooting very accurately. Additionally Zoe Milbourn was in the circle and was playing

GS playing at high quality throughout the game and also shooting accurately. In the defence Chloe Lindley was playing GK and was able to mark her player and make some good interceptions, also playing in a defensive role was Sophie Allan who was playing WD and also made many interceptions and was able to use the space to make some solid passes across

the court. Our score reflected our hard work and effort, which we had played throughout the match. There was some outstanding play, which helped contribute the score, which was 31-7 to Willingdon. I would like to thank all the people that participated in the game and as it was the last year 11 game I would also like to thank Miss Attrill and Miss Graffham for all the hard work and effort that they have put in the netball team for the last 5 years."

Students in year 7 and 8 have been reading and quizzing with Accelerated Reader. Many year 7 students were familiar with the system from their primary schools, and have enjoyed the challenge of being able to read a wider range of books at WCS to take quizzes and win

prizes. Year 8 students, already experts at AR, are continuing their reading for a second year this year.

All students in year 7 and 8 should be reading a book from the library (or a book from home which is on the AR system) and taking their AR quizzes to earn

prizes and Reward Points. 100% on a quiz scores 10 reward points and wins either a bookmark or a sticker. 85% or above scores 5 reward points and earns a sticker. A bookmark full of stickers means that students can win a new bookmark with the next 100% quiz score. The more bookmarks you have, the greater your chance of winning prizes in the end of term draw.

Term 2 winners were:

Harrison Hunt Year 7Bethany Moreton Year 8

Both students won a £5 Amazon voucher, which we hope they have enjoyed

and spent on a good book!

Parents will soon be able to log on to Accelerated Reader from home to check their child’s progress AND receive email updates every time their child takes an Accelerated Reader quiz. You can find out more about AR at the Parent Forum on 14th March.

Readers!Want to recommend a book for AR? Is there a book you’d love to read, that’s on Accelerated Reader but not in the library? Make your recommendations to Mrs Pellet in the library for the chance to get your favourite books stocked!

On Friday the 11th of January, 6 students (Emma French, Ben Preston, Elly Collins, Stephanie Watson, Charlotte Weyland and me, Enya Costin) travelled to Roedean school to watch the award ceremony of the Southern School Book awards, along with Miss Morrison-Price and our school librarian, Miss Pellet. After school, we went to the library and ordered 3 pizzas, though they didn't last long! After eating to our hearts content, we headed to Roedean school in the school minibus. Once we arrived at Roedean, we were shocked because it was so big. We headed to their theatre and were seated along with 40 other schools to discover the winner. I sat in the second row, whilst my peers and the teachers sat two rows behind me. There were 5 different books we had to read and review; Momentum by Saci Lloyd, Boys Don’t Cry by Malorie Blackman, Buried Thunder by Tim Bowler, Socks Are Not Enough by Mark Lowery, and This Is Not Forgiveness by Celia Rees. These were the books

short listed for the awards. Earlier in the school year, we started reading the books, and writing reviews, which were then counted up as votes. Each author then gave a little speech on the inspiration for their book, and read the first chapter of their book. This was quite interesting as some ideas were quite random, such as your parents deciding they want to become nudists! (Socks are not enough). The results were finally announced. Tim Bowler won the highly commended award for his spooky and slightly freaky book, Buried Thunder, whilst Malorie Blackman

Southern Schools Book Award Presentation Evening

won the award for her realistic and down-to-earth book Boys Don’t Cry. When the author of momentum, Saci Lloyd gave her speech, she said she would throw a temper tantrum if she didn't win. Once the results were called, she proceeded to try and steal the award of the others! She was the most eccentric of the authors, but also my personal favourite, she leapt around the stage and made fun of one of the schools that had to wear bright red berets! After the awards were collected, and thank you speeches made, Each school was called to the stage in alphabetical order to

collect the book tokens. These were worth £7 each. We were one of the last schools to be called to the front. I walked up to receive the tokens before returning to my seat. The curtains on the stage were pulled back to reveal piles and stacks of books by the authors. We were allowed to use our book tokens to buy one of these books, though some people brought along money. Once we had bought our books, we then went through to a dance studio, where the authors were sitting at a long table. This was where they signed our books for us and took some photos with us. Once everyone had got their books signed, we went through to “the green room” where we stayed and had some drinks. We were then lead back to our mini bus, and started to head back home. Everyone was quite tired as it had been a long day, some even fell asleep for the journey back to school! All in all, we had a great time, and thoroughly enjoyed reading the books and meeting the authors.
