Paris visitAs the plane landed in Charles de Gaulle Airport, a sunny and warm Paris welcomed our students and language teachers.
Once bags had been checked-in at the hostel, the group enjoyed their first Paris sunset and a visit to the Arc de Triomphe. Then a ‘fantastique’ ride of ‘La Grande Roue’ where students could admire Paris by night.
The students walked approximately 20,000
steps the following day (according to my pedometer!) and walked up the Eiffel Tower without ever complaining about the heat! The visit to the tower this year was made even more memorable by the poignant one minute silence which began at midday, when we were right at the top of the tower. The trip also included a visit to Notre Dame, Sacré Coeur and the historical Royal Palace of Versailles.
Students loved their shopping task in the Latin Quarter where they had a chance to practise their French, as well as having portraits done in the famous art district of Montmartre.
The Paris visit was a fantastic experience had by all. We were extremely proud of our Wilmslow High students for their friendliness, maturity, passion and enthusiasm! Merci et au revoir Paris!

Science Students Explore IcelandAt the end of the summer term 35 science students completed an exciting 5 day trip to Iceland. The visit included a range of cross-curricular science topics against a background of some of
Iceland’s most magnificent natural features. The students from Years 11 and 12 were supported by Dr Neild, Mrs Sharp, Mr Jones and Mr Egan.
Day 1 – We landed at Keflavik airport and drove through a landscape of black lava the Blue Lagoon. With temperatures of between 30-40°C, the water is drawn
from a depth of around 2000m and is rich in silica and blue green algae. Students enjoyed relaxing in the therapeutic waters of the lagoon.A short drive then brought us to the capital, Reykjavik and our hotel. We dined at The Hamburger Factory before walking into the city centre for an unusual cinema experience in one of the old harbour buildings: The Birth of an Island.
Day 2 – We visited Skogarfoss, one of Iceland’s stunning waterfalls, and the Eyjafjallajökull volcano visitor
centre before a embarking on a thrilling glacier walk on the Solheimajokull glacier. With crampons and ice axes we were guided into a wonderful world of ridges, deep crevasses and ice sculptures. Students learnt how climate change is causing the glacier to retreat. The day concluded with a walk along the spectacular black sand beach, sea stacks and basalt columns at Reynishverfi and a visit to the Seljalandsfoss waterfall.
Day 3 - We began our day with a visit to the Westman Islands puffin colony . The main island is the site of the 1973 volcanic
eruption, which covered many homes with lava. We hiked to the Eldfell crater and enjoyed a spectacular view of the lava flow across the town and down to the harbour. A visit to the exhibition centre (the Pompeii of the North) and a couple of hours in the geothermally heated swimming pool rounded off our visit before we boarded the ferry back to the mainland.
Day 4 – We visited Hellisheidi power station where students learnt how geothermal energy is used in Iceland, delivering hot water for heating to Reykavik’s homes. After a quick stop at an earthquake simulator, we visited the three tier waterfall at Gullfoss and witnessed the 30m eruptions of the “Strokkur” geyser. Then, kitted up in hard hats and head torches, we experienced lava tube caving. Then finally, Thingvellir National Park, the site of Iceland’s first parliament and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
Day 5 – A very early start to catch the morning flight back to Manchester.

NOTES
Expectations Evenings and AssembliesThank you to the parents and carers that joined us this week and last week for our Expectations Evenings. We have been working hard to design our new assessment and reporting model and we very much enjoyed the opportunity to share this with you. This message was followed up with our students this week in an assembly by Ms Powley. Both presentations can be found on our website at the following link: http://www.wilmslowhigh.com/student-services-7-11/assembly-powerpoint/ We appreciated the questions that parents had, and answers to these will be given in High Notes below and over the next few weeks. Do parents have separate access to firefly? As we develop our use of firefly over the course of the year we will be providing separate access for parents, but at present we are encouraging parents to look at firefly with their children, using the student log in. What is in place if a student can’t access the technology?Instruction can be found on the school website (Firefly - logging in from home). Please follow these very carefully. http://www.wilmslowhigh.com/home/firefly-logging-home-2/
It is important that our students let us know if they are having any problems accessing the technology. Students will have the opportunity to discuss this in form time next week. If a problem occurs, as with any homework problem, parents can provide a note in the planner.
Aspirations QuestionnaireAll students are being asked to complete the WHS Aspirations Questionnaire. This will help us to:
• better understand what motivates our students• direct opportunities to interested groups
We are asking students to access the questionnaire via Firefly (http://wilmslowhigh.fireflycloud.net). The questionnaire should be linked to their main dashboard. In order to access this site they will need their e-mail [email protected], their user name normal school logon (Gxxxxx) and their normal school password. New students joining the school should have been given logon details and shown how to use our IT systems. Please speak to your form tutor if you have any difficulties accessing the questionnaire.
• make links between curricular learning and employment• identify any discrepancies between achievement and ambition

Stranger danger An incident occurred on Friday evening when a student was approached by a man who was driving a white pick-up van. Please can you remind your son/daughter to be vigilant and where possible try not to be alone on isolated roads. If students are concerned they should report any incidents to Student Services immediately.
POLITE NOTICEMay we remind all parents and supporters
who wish to watch our weekly sports fixtures, Wilmslow High School operates
a policy of NO DOGS or SMOKING anywhere on the school site.
This is a requirement of our Health & Safety Policy.
May we thank everyone for their co-operation in this matter.
Please NoteA small number of students became unwell last week after enjoying the sunshine in The Carrs Park on Wednesday September 7th. A common factor would appear to be having had a “dip” in the River Bollin. Should your child have been at the Carrs on that day and been subsequently unwell, please contact Medical Needs Coordinators Mrs Cragg/Mrs Robinson on 01625 526191 extn 300 if you have not already done so.http://tinyurl.com/hahhep7

HockeyThe hockey teams travelled away to Arnold KEQMS, traditionally very strong opposition. Our girls played some fantastic hockey and really held their own, with the seniors losing out 4 - 2, whilst the U16 team managed a 1 - 1 draw.
At junior level the U14 girls put in an impressive performance to win 4 - 2 and the U13s lost narrowly.
On Wednesday, the senior girls hosted Kings Chester in a friendly fixture. With Wilmslow missing a couple of key players in midfield the girls had to work hard to keep possession. They stuck to the task however, and were unfortunate to concede in the last minute, bringing the score to 2 - 2.
FootballIn football our first ESFA cup fixture got underway this week with the Year 10 boys playing host to St Ambrose High of Salford. The team worked hard, dominating the first half and missing a number of good chances which they were eventually made to pay for.
After having already played seventy minutes of football, with the scores tied at 1 - 1, our boys eventually ran out of steam in extra time, conceding a scrappy late goal to lose 2 - 1. The Cheshire and Macclesfield and district cups await though, so there’s plenty of opportunity for silverware yet.
The senior boys had no such problems in dispatching St Monica’s High School in their ESFA cup match. Some superb football saw them win 3-0 and progress to the next round.
This promises to be a great season, especially since Mr Sachro has secured the services of Shaun Goater to assist him and Mr Lightfoot as senior football coaches. The Manchester City legend is keen to work with Wilmslow’s talented young footballers and should provide valuable coaching expertise and top level experience.
NetballOur netball teams also entertained All Hallows on Wednesday, winning four out of six games overall. The pick of the bunch were the U15 girls who won 20 - 1.
The U13s also ran out comfortable winners, beating their opposition 22 - 3.
At senior level, the girls put in another impressive performance, winning 34 - 11.

RugbyOn Saturday, our rugby teams played against Altrincham grammar school in fantastic conditions.
This has always been a very competitive fixture at junior level and Saturday proved no different. Out of the six games played, Wilmslow won two and lost four but the margins were tight across the board.
At senior level, our first team fielded a slightly understrength team but still managed to run out comfortable winners, 43 - 15, whilst the 2nd team posted an impressive 24 - 17 victory.

Wilmslow High School, in partnership with G8way has launched the G8way Stronger Families Network, aimed at working together with a variety of support networks and contacts within the local community to support parents, carers, wider families and students in maximising their potential.
Other than a free breakfast or evening buffet and a free drink, below is a taster of what we have in store. A Creche is available for those who cannot get childcare. Where buffet and drinks are provided for adults, we will of course provide the same for the children.
This is a ground-breaking project, aimed at reducing any barriers that parents, carers or families may have with the generic school system by finding alternative (and very informal) ways in which the school and the wider community can communicate with, help and support every family moving forwards.

On 24th September, Wilmslow town centre will once again be buzzing with excitement when its streets are transformed into a hotbed of luxury high-end cars and superbikes.
The Wilmslow Motor Show is like no other, a one day outdoor pop-up motor show with displays of prestige vehicles, supercars, superbikes as well as boats from some of the finest names.
For the first time ever, Wilmslow Motor Show will welcome Chester Harley Davidson who will be displaying their custom made bike, created specifically for the Show.
We are also pleased to announce BMW Motorrad specialists, Williams Motorcycles, will also be attending with a double stand.
Once again Sporting Bears Motor Club will enable visitors to experience the drive of their life in an Aston Martin, Ferrari or Bentley in return for a small donation to The Children’s Adventure Farm Trust.
And of course the highlight of the day will be the Supercar Parade with up to 40 cars doing laps around the town and creating a mesmerising soundtrack.
The event which was set up in 2012 is organised by the Wilmslow Business Group and supported by Wilmslow Town Council, and is expected to bring over 30,000 visitors
to the centre of Wilmslow providing a huge boost to the local economy.
In addition to The Motor Show, Wilmslow town centre boasts some of the best boutique shops, cafés and restaurants making it a fantastic day out for all the family. Catherine Mackenzie chairman of the
Wilmslow Business Group, who organises the event said,” The Motor Show is a great family day out, bringing real vibrancy to the town centre. This will be the fourth Motor Show that the Business Group has delivered to the town and we plan on this one being even better than previous ones.”
Steve Kennedy of Mailboxes etc, who was the brainchild of the Motor Show back in 2012 commented: “We get a real buzz from the day which is a win-win for all involved – the retailers, restaurants and bars see an increase in business; the dealers get to showcase their vehicles and the town gets a great day out.”
The event is free to attend and is taking place 10am until 4pm in Wilmslow Town Centre, along Grove Street, Bank Square and Alderley Road service road. You can follow the build-up of the event on Twitter, Facebook and Website: http//:www.wilmslowmotorshow.getintowilmslow.co.uk

WE’D LIKE TO TEACH THE WORLD TO SING….A CAPPELLA STYLE!There’s a new women’s choir about to launch and we’d like to invite YOU to join us!
There are more singing programmes on television these days than you can shake a stick at - and it is little wonder - choral singing is so good for you. The kids are back at school, so ladies, if you’re looking for a new adventure this autumn, look no further. Come and enjoy some “ME” time on a Wednesday evening, make new friends and explore a wonderful new pastime.
Should you need further convincing, here are just ten excellent reasons why:
1) It’s healthy: singing helps you develop good posture, breathe properly and maintain mental alertness. It’s a great stress reliever too, not to mention the positive effects, which help to boost your immune system.
2) It’s fun: ask any singer why they sing and they’ll tell you it’s because they enjoy it. Your weekly singing night may well become your best night out of the week!
3) It’s inclusive: whatever your age, ability or experience.
4) It’s inexpensive: monthly membership subs are great value for money.
5) It’s challenging: like any skill, your singing will improve with practice, helpful direction and coaching to bring out the best in you.
6) It’s rewarding: the sense of achievement gained when you hear your harmony part fitting together with others in a beautiful song is indescribable. Audience applause has an amazing effect on your adrenalin levels too!
7) It’s fu lf illing: you’re instantly part of a community organisation that helps fundraise for charity, entertains friends and family and supports the local arts.
8) It’s sociable: you’ll make new friends when joining, not only when singing each week but also on other social nights out.
9) It’s involving: the more you put in, the more you’ll get out of your endeavours.
10) It’s good for the soul: ask any singer. It will make you glow with raised spirits and touch emotions. Confidence levels increase too.
Whatever your age, background and ability, do please come along to our F REE singing induction course on Wednesday evenings from September 21st onwards at the Mottram St Andrew Village Hall from 7.45pm til 10pm. Whilst singing fun songs, we’ll teach you lots about breathing, 4-part harmony, physical posture, musical interpretation and so on and so forth. Great fun guaranteed!
If you’d like to know more and register your
interest, please contact Hilary on 07975 927423 or email [email protected].
A warm welcome awaits you…..
