North East District Council

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The North East District Council was founded in July 1966 after formation of the Ministry of Local Government which took over districts governance from the Tribal Administration that operated under the African Administration proclamation of 1954. NEDC started its operations with its head quarters based in Francistown until 1992 when it relocated to Masunga.

ABOUT NORTH EAST DISTRICT COUNCIL

North East District Council (NEDC) is located in Masunga village, which is the headquarters and the major service point for the district. Its offices are in the central area of Masunga village and are located within the Rural Administration Centre (RAC) complex. The district has one functional service centre located in the village of Tati Siding.

DEPARTMENTS

Human Resources and AdministrationIt facilitates service delivery through the provision of competent manpower, administration and ICT services as well as provision of safe custody of council records and facilitation of council businesses.

Finance and Development PlanningPrepares district development plans, manages all council finances, licenses all commercial businesses in the district, implement the Matimela Act, procure and manage supplies for the council.

Architecture and BuildingsProvide Architectural, Recreational and Building services to the whole District including design and construction of new council buildings, maintenance of council facilities, controlling of construction activities and for private developers.

Civil and MechanicalDesign, construct and maintain roads, electrical infrastructure and also responsible for management of transport for the entire council.

Social and Community Development Improve the socio economic well being of individuals, groups and communities through capacity building and empowerment to enhance their standard of living.

Legal ServicesIt is charged with ensuring that the councils operations are executed within the framework of the law and that the business and local community adhere to the council’s bye-laws and other relevant legislation. It comprises of the Legal Affairs and the Bye-Law Enforcement divisions

Physical Planning, Housing and Estate Management It Coordinates Physical Planning activities, the administration of Self Help Housing Programmes, management of council property, Land valuation acquisition.
