Right now we have members who have been on the street, without pay, for over a month due to letting their D/A expire. The training department is occupied with over 200 new hires; it can take as long as 2 months to book your tests with training. There is on outside company that does the training for $500.00 but there is not guarantee you will pass. Maybe you should check when your D/A expires right now.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Transfer meetings resumed April 16. Annual vacation bid selections will accompany transfer requests. We expect movements to take place early May, and are intending to have a transfer meeting following these movements.

Subcontracting continues to be an issue in just about every department. Please be vigilant and report instances of this nature to your Shop Steward and/or Shop Committee. Our jobs are worth speaking out for!

LAT5 dead l i ne i s f as t approaching. If you obtain your LAT5 after 2013-04-23 you will not qualify for the differential back pay dated to 2012-08-27.

The introduction of the new shift lines in conjunction with the decrease in 71M and 72M and the balancing of the manpower matrix will disrupt many comfort zones and shift patterns. We have actively promoted concepts and ideas to help mitigate this and make the a l te rnat ives more des i rab le . Unfortunately our input has had little impact. We sincerely hope everyone lands in a place of their choice that somehow suits their needs.

We require more Shop Stewards. If you would like to be a representative please drop by the office and we can provide you with the information you may require.

We are often surprised when we look back over the month and realize that we have not been able to “make the rounds” on the floor as often as we would like. Daily business with meet ings and member issues often keep us contained in the office. If you have any questions about current issues or rumours you are hearing, please come by the office for a visit. We will be glad to shed light where we can, or find the answers if we can’t.

The Company and Union met to resolve the ongoing Cat 23 split issue. Currently we do not know the results of that meeting, but there should be news shortly. We would like to thank all those on the committee who worked hard to ensure our members received the best possible outcome.

Have a great month.

The highest bid wasn't high enough to nab a piece of Canadian aviation history. The Boeing 767, known as the Gimli Glider, was on the auction block this afternoon in Mississauga, Ont. The Gimli Glider was being auctioned off by Collector Car Productions. The highest bid was $425,000, which Lobzun said was below the reserve price. It continued as an Air Canada passenger plane until it was retired from its fleet in 2008. It has been sitting in a warehouse in California ever since.

EQUALITY DAY APRIL 17, 2013

April is Women’s History Month; it’s a very significant day in history and for people as a whole.

On Apri l 17, 1985 the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms was established, the day was also commonly referred too as Equality Day. On this day, the charter was signed by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and Queen Elizabeth II. Due to the activism of women across Canada, section 15 w a s a d d e d a n d a l s o t h e implementation of section 28.

Section 15 states:

“Equality Rights

15.(1) Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to equal protection and equal benefit of the law without

discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability.

(2) Subsection (1) does not preclude any law, program or activity that has as its object the amelioration of c o n d i t i o n s o f d i s a d v a n t a g e individuals or groups including those that are d isadvantage because of race, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability.

28. Notwithstanding anything in this Charter, the rights and freedoms referred to in it are guaranteed equa l ly to male and female persons.”

Canada has made tremendous progress to promote equality amongst men and women. Even

though we have the Charter of Rights, too often we hear of many injustices in the workplace and society.

Unfortunately, discrimination against women still occurs on a daily basis. Hopefully through public awareness things will get better.

Porter and Toronto Port Authority unsuccessful in attempt to stifle free expression in airline strike -CNW

The Port Authority and the airline sought a wide-ranging order from Superior Court, including severe restrictions on the ability to conduct demonstrations at Little Norway Park at the corner of Bathurst Street and Queen's Quay West.

The union will also be allowed to hand out leaflets at the entrance to the terminal. The Port Authority objected to leafleting, arguing that the airport is "private property," and two union officials had earlier been charged and a r res ted fo r t respass ing i n connection with leafleting activity. The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that airports are public property for picketing purposes.

"Porter is trying to use its corporate might to undermine rights to free speech and access to public space," says Glenn Wheeler, legal counsel for the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union, which represents 22 fuel handlers who have been on strike since January 10.

Porter Airlines launches $4 million libel lawsuit against union amid labour dispute -Toronto Star

Porter Airlines has launched a lawsui t against the un ion representing 22 str ik ing fuel workers for comments made on Twitter.

The statement of claim, which was filed in Ontario Superior Court earlier this month, seeks $3

million for general and special damages for defamation and $1 million in punitive, aggravated and exemplary damages.

A c c o r d i n g t o c o u r t documents, Porter alleges libelous comments against the airline were made by Stalteri on behalf of the union through a Twitter account under the username @PorterStrike, which had more than 200 followers as of Wednesday afternoon.

“The defamatory statements have caused Porter to suffer s ign i f icant and un just i f iab le damages to its reputation and business, for which the defendants are liable,” the airline wrote in the s t a t e m e n t o f c l a i m . “ T h e defamatory statements were m a l i c i o u s . T h e d e f e n d a n t s repeatedly, publicly and for no legitimate purpose chose to make statements they knew or should have known to be false”.

Open Canada's skies to foreign airlines, consumer group says -CBC

The Consumers' Association of Canada is calling for the federal g o v e r n m e n t t o a l l o w m o r e competition from foreign airlines. The group says Canada's current policy protects the dominant domest ic a i r l ines and l imi ts consumer choice.

Association president Bruce Cran says it will use recent polling data to support its call for change in Canada's aviation industry.

"It is time to open Canada's skies and welcome foreign carriers into this market to compete for the business of Canadian travellers."

The survey of 1,015 people in Canada was conducted between Jan. 31 and Feb. 4.

Walmart Refuses to Compensate Bangladesh Fire Victims -Ecouterre

Looks like there are limits to Walmart’s largesse.

After announcing its $1.6 million contribution towards the establishment of an Environmental Health and Safety Academy in Bangladesh, the world’s largest retailer has so far declined to join other companies in voluntarily c o m p e n s a t i n g v i c t i m s o f a devastating fire that killed at least 112 garment workers outside the capital of Dhaka in November.

The company, allegedly Tazreen Fashions’ largest buyer, also failed to attend a meeting hosted by the IndustriAll Union in Geneva Monday, where companies that cont racted the fac i l i ty, including C&A in the Netherlands, KiK in Germany, and El Corte Inglés of Spain, discussed compensation payments for the injured and families of the deceased.
