Success Story of Malda Wholesale Consumers’ Co-operative Society Ltd. The society started its journey way back in 1968 in the name of West Dinajpur Malda Wholesale Consumers’ Co-operative Society Ltd. and operated in the same name till 1973 and it has emerged in 1974 in the name Malda Wholesale Consumers’ Co-operative Society Ltd. The society has witnessed ups and downs several times in its history of business and profit till now. Initially, its business was mainly confined to cloth & other dress materials mainly ‘Janata Cloth’ and other clothing materials supplied by Mills under NTC; but with cessation of supply of clothing materials by the NTC Mills from 1986 it had lost its major business baskets and to pay the price because of lack of foresight to extend its business basket in other areas. With dependence heavily on the MR business at that time the society although increased its business turnover but due to very meagre margin of profit the society’s total business failed to earn any net profit - rather the society suffered loss for years together registering an accumulated loss of Rs.14.70 lakh from mid eighties to early nineties. The society had decided to avail financial assistance from NCDC through State Government in the shape of loan, grant & share for introduction of a self-service unit of 800 sq. Ft. Area for selling of consumers’ articles and with this it started turning around with operating profit. In the year 2004 the society’s business sharply dropped down due to failure of the society for continuance of its huge business (40% of the turnover) with ICDS offices across the district and naturally it told upon the profit & loss a/c of the society. Now the society again has tried to overcome the situation by opening a new avenues of business by installing an offset printing machine it had fetched a good number of orders of printing both from Government and non-Government and swelled the profit basket of the society. The society’s get-up entirely changed with the implementation of a scheme with the assistance of State Government followed by infrastructural assistance from the ICD Project at Malda District wherein the society with a fund of Rs.3.68 lakh installed computer & furniture and revamp the self-service counter by increasing its business area from 800 sq. ft. to 2500 sq. ft. during 2004-05. The society further received a fund of Rs.75.00 lakh for expansion-cum-modernisation-cum-computerisation of self-service area of 4000 sq. ft. in 2011-12 and registered an average monthly sale of Rs.77.00 lakh. The sale value will increase further with the expansion of self-service unit of 6500 sq. ft. after completion of the RKVY Project in 2012-13.
