HUL
to
roll
out
India’s
first
liquid
detergent
Hindustan Unilever will soon launch the country's first liquid laundry detergent, in
expectation that affluent consumers will pay a premium for a product that promises to maketheir laundry chores easier. At INR 230 for a liter, Surf Excel Liquid will be the most
expensive daily use detergent product. So far, liquids were sold only for woolen clothes or as
post‐wash whiteners and conditioners within the laundry category.
This move fits into HUL's strategy of ‘premiumization’ and filling up niche spaces in a
category which offers one of the lowest margins to manufacturers. With 90% penetration in
the core detergent space, Hindustan Unilever is trying to create newer consumptionopportunities in the over INR 150 bn laundry market.
