“During the Cold War, innovation was largely driven by investments from

the military and domestic defense industry and produced technologies specifically designed for defense purposes.

By contrast, innovation today is increasingly driven by the commercial sector

and produces technologies that must be adapted for defense purposes after production.” -Center for a New American Security; June 2014

The 2015 International Consumer Electronics Show displayed technology breakthroughs in industries such as assisted/autonomous automobiles, 3D

printing, materials, wearables, analytics, drones, sensors etc.

VMI attends CES to discover leading edge innovations being introduced into the consumer market and to assess their potential cross-industry applications.

Why Focus on CES?

Headsets – BCI’s

Emotiv IEEE Raceway – Using Brainwaves to Race Cars • IEEE set up a raceway for CES attendees to try their minds to compete

• Headsets were developed by Emotiv, an Australian electronics company that develops brain-

computer interfaces (Starting at $499)

• Wearing the headset, players could practice alternating between a “neural” state, which

involves not thinking about anything, and a “push” state in which the person actively thinks

about moving the car forward

• When they were ready to begin, players focused their attention on the racetrack, waited for the

countdown, and the moved the cars down the track as quickly as possible

MUSE Brain Sensing Headband

• Brain fitness (3 minutes a day) focus attention exercises that improves how you respond to stress,

gives you lasting feeling of self-control and improves your emotional state

• Uses EEG brainwaves, with Bio-feedback; Open platform with SDK

• A study showed that 20 minutes of focused attention training for 3 days in a row has been

shown to reduce anxiety, improve mood, and reduce heart rate.

• Research on longer sessions has documented other benefits, like increased grey matter density,

reduced thinning of the prefrontal cortex, decreasing amygdala activity (associated with stress

response), and increased resilience – basically, an overall beneficial change of the brain’s

structure and function.

Reach Bionics Headset – Wearable Controller Technology

• Next generation headset that measures EMG signals generated by muscles around the ears and wirelessly transmits the signals to devices as commands

• Cranial nerves that contract muscles can control computers, motorized vehicles, etc.

• Can be used by those affected by neuromuscular injuries up to the highest spinal cord injury

(Brain Computer Interfaces)

Security/Surveillance

Ekin Labs Hi WiFi Security • Cracked the code on using WiFi networks to detect motion – i.e. intruders

• First smart home security solution that leverages consumers’ existing WiFi network and WiFi-enabled

devices to deliver a cost-effective, “smart” home security solution

• Requires nothing more than a free app download in order for you to immediately install a home

security system that uses the WiFi network to detect intruders

• Learns over time to recognize false positives and can discern between movements of family

members or pets verses an intruder.

Netatmo Welcome • The home camera with facial recognition technology will send the names of the people it

recognizes to your smartphone as they enter your home and notifies you when it sees an unknown

face

• Full HD at 30fps, 130⁰ field of view, and night vision capability

• “Bank level” encryption of streaming footage

Eyelock's Myris -- No more passwords! • First and only Iris authenticator to meet the Fast Identity Online (FIDO) 1.0 standard.

• Uses iris rather than retina to identify user. The chance of a false ID is one in 1.5 million

• Create super complex passwords that you won't have to remember -- using a USB-powered add-on

to authenticate your identity instead -- Embedded into pc’s that are just now shipping

• The device uses video rather than still pictures to scan the iris, operating at 20fps.

EyeLock researchers and scientists are working in labs and in the field to create technology to improve every facet of identity based

product and technology, from access control, border solutions and transportation to advanced banking and payments

applications.

Navigation / Location

TRX Systems 3D Indoor Location Mapping • NEON sensor fusion and mapping software uses information from low cost sensors to deliver

location and context in indoor, underground, and other environments without reliable

GPS (utilizes mobile phones’ internal sensors - see Pathsense below)

• Three buildings are mapped dynamically as users walk through the building with a device

hosting TRX NEON FeatureSLAM software

• FeatureSLAM enables accurate indoor location by creating crowdsourced navigation maps

including structural (floors, stairwells, elevators, hallways), magnetic, and radio frequency features

Pathsense – Precise locations without GPS • Provides precise location without GPS and with 90% less battery drain than GPS

• Pathsense is now offering SDKs for mobile app developers

• PathSense utilizes smartphones’ internal sensors — MEMS gyroscopes, accelerometers,

magnetometers, and others — as well as a predictive routing algorithm to determine the location

and then track it; Pings GPS just once when the app launches for a starting point, it is designed to

maintain location awareness with minimal battery drain.

• And in many cases, outdo even GPS for accuracy in urban settings

• Traditional location identification:

• GPS is generally the most accurate, but has the biggest battery tax and is unreliable in urban

downtown areas with “canyons” of skyscrapers

• Cell tower triangulations using a combination of signals or using WiFi limit your location radius

to a mile and 200 yards, respectively; Both often don’t work, especially on the go

So, why were people wearing

Pathsense shirts standing in

the Garmin Booth at CES?

• Smart motorized vent with sensors adjusts to changes and learns homeowner behavior

Sengled Boost LED Lighting and provides WiFi hotspot

• First WiFi extending LED bulb – creates WiFi hotspots

• With each bulb you connect, the range of your WiFi is increased. More bulbs means more places to

enjoy your content without worrying about slower speeds. And don’t forget, they’re great at

illumination too

CURB – Home Energy $ Use $ (From DEMO Winner 2014)

• CES’s Smart Home this year could not match this innovation we saw at DEMO 2014 in November.

Curb was a Wow! And won the Demo God Award

• Curb lets you track down every energy consuming device/appliance in your home

• How? Through a central hub that already exists in your home - the circuit breaker box that

links all devices in your home in one location

• Curb is able to determine the exact percentage and cost of every single device

draining power in your home in real time

• Curb also alerts you when your devices are about to fail… so they can be repaired before it gets

really costly

• First order… Jan 2015 – cost: ~sub $300 one time…

Squadrone System’s Hexo+ Awesome Simplicity of Operation

• Intelligent drone that follows and films you autonomously – aerial filming for everyone

• VMI’s choice of best user interface – simplicity - it is a camera first and a drone second.

You don’t steer it in the traditional sense. Instead, you use a simple app on your smartphone to tell

the camera what kind of shot you are trying to take.

• Cost: $1,149 package includes : • HEXO+ drone, • 3D gimbal with GoPro Mount • HEXO+ App "The

Director's Toolkit" Worldwide shipping included (GoPro not included)

• Kickstarter (7/15/2014) raised $1.3 million

• Winner of Intel’s 2014, “Make it Wearable Challenge” using the Edison technology, a computer

chip and hardware platform for wearables and the IoT. Awarded $500,000 to turn it into a product;

<0.1 ob, captures full HD images or video, syncs with a smartphone.

• Worn as a slap bracelet; At your cue, Nixie unfolds and takes flight; composes the perfect shot

from an awesome perspective, capturing the moment without interrupting the moment.
