Construction update

The Reid Highway Dual Carriageway is taking shape between Altone Road and West Swan Road with the project on track for completion mid-2020

Traffic will shortly be diverted onto a temporary alignment, which will enable us to pave the new westbound lanes and tie them into the Altone Road and Lord Street intersections without disrupting traffic flow.

More than 100,000 cubic metres of fill, 75,000 cubic metres of crushed rock and 75,000 hours of work has gone into the Reid Highway Dual Carriageway Project so far. We are using as much recycled material as possible on the project including crushed rock from the Matagarup Bridge project and excess fill from NorthLink WA Stage 2 which would otherwise have gone to land fill. We are also using Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP). RAP involves the use of old road surfaces in the production of new asphalt. RAP is increasingly being incorporated into new asphalt production due to the environmental and economic savings it creates. The use of RAP means avoiding the use of new natural resources as part of the process.

Arthur Street Bridge update

Work to construct the new bridge over Reid Highway at Arthur Street is progressing to schedule. The work involves construction of a new concrete bridge and road approaches. The new two-span bridge will be 64 metres long, 6.1 metres high at the highest point above the Highway, with one lane in each direction. There will be a path over the bridge and screens to provide privacy for neighbouring residents. The screens on the approach ramps to the bridge will be made from concrete. The screens directly above Reid Highway will be made from perforated mesh incorporating a randomised wave pattern, developed by Noongar Artist Barbara Bynder. The design for the screens will reflect the story of moving water and women carrying water in coolamons (wooden bowls) on their heads to their camps.

The abutments and retaining walls for the new bridge are almost complete. Installation of the bridge beams is scheduled for mid-February 2020. This will be followed by construction of the steel, formwork, and pouring of the bridge deck.

Arthur Street Bridge Abutment

Grandis Road/Arthur Street Roundabout to be closed in January 2020

The roundabout at the intersection of Arthur Street, Grandis Road and Victoria Road will be closed for up to five months from the end of January. The closure is required to enable removal and reconstruction of the roundabout to tie in with the new Arthur Street bridge. As part of the works, underground sewer lines will be relocated and new road drainage infrastructure will be installed.

The closure of the intersection will be managed with signed detours. The median island on Arthur Street on the north side of the roundabout will be removed to create a temporary turnaround area for Arthur Street residents to access their properties while the new roundabout is built. We’ll endeavour to complete the roundabout works as soon as possible and thank you for your understanding and patience while we complete these works.

Managing dust in the summer months

At this time of the year, wind and dust from the work site is a challenge. We understand it can be unpleasant living close to a construction site, and we’re working hard to minimise the impacts of dust on surrounding residents. This includes using water carts to wet down the work areas.

Over the Christmas period when we are not working, we will use safe dust suppressants such as hydromulch in a number of exposed areas along the project site to minimise dust. We will also have water carts on standby during this period in case of windy weather conditions.

Christmas Break

We are having a well-earned break between Christmas and new year. Work will start again in early January when we get ready to install the bridge beams at Arthur Street and Bennett Brook. These activities will require night works and overnight closures of Reid Highway. Residents will be notified of the road closures and night works in advance.
