HIGH-PERFORMANCE SEALS IN COMPLIANCE WITH INTERNATIONAL
STANDARDS AND IDG CONSTRUCTIONS
We have gathered our experience and tried topresent it in the best possible way in this bro-chure. It was not possible to take all applicati-ons into account, many not being treated inany great detail. Revision of individual state-ments may be necessary as a result of newdevelopments in technical know-how. We the-refore recommend a preliminary test for eachapplication. We cannot bear any responsibilityfor the results in advance. No legal responsibi-lity can therefore be borne relating to informati-on in this brochure.

MANOY® sealsMANOY® bearingsMANOY® scrapers
IDG-Dichtungstechnik GmbH offers an exten-sive range of standard and specialised sealsand associated components under theMANOY® brand whose dynamic element chief-ly lies in specific composite plastics. Thesematerials are developed by IDG for demandingsealing applications and are subjective to continuous further development, thus makingan important contribution to the success ofMANOY® products.
MANOY® products have continually proventhemselves, thanks to the suitability of theirconstruction and design to the aforementio-ned IDG materials.
This procedure also leads to individual andtechnically innovative problem solutions ineven unusual applications. IDG-Dichtungs-technik, as your partner, can offer a specialadvantage in this respect: you get the con-struction, material development, test and serial delivery from a single source.
IDG-Dichtungstechnik have, within the boundsof this objective strategy, their own qualitymanagement system which conforms with theDIN EN ISO 9001 international standard.
You have the support of a quality-consciousand competent partner when it comes to que-stions relating to seals.

The laid-out lengthof the bearing ring
Using a knife with materials 94A and 62A or ahacksaw with materials G12 and G13, cut off asuitable length. As standard, the cut should bemade at an angle of 30°.
A slot width (P) of 0.5 mm at the maximumapplication temperature is needed to allow thebearing ring heat-expansion. Please refer toFigure 39.
The laid-out length is calculated as follows forcylinder and rod bearing rings:
L = Dm · π (1 -  ·  t)
L Laid-out length in mm
Dm Mean diameter (neutral fibre) in mm
Coefficient of dilatation from table 37

Bearing ring width Calculation formula Tmin =
Tmin Required minimum width of the bearing ring F Largest occurring radial pressure, in NCT Width correction factor, according to
figure 38D Guide diameter in mm0,5 Surface factor. This takes into account
that part of the circumference where loadis actually applied, at extreme tolerancelimits
Pperm Permitted dynamic stress loading, expressed in N/mm2, taken from table 36
If possible, the total calculated guide widthshould be distributed over two or more bearing rings. The resulting bearing ring widthswill be rounded up to the next largest availablewidth, as shown in table 38.
Please refer to page 84 in the ”Construction“section for an example how bearing ringsshould be arranged.

Fluids
A rubber elastic O-ring, worked from silicon-elastomer or fluor-elastomer is enclosed in a seamless capsule made from tetrafluorethy-lene-hexafluoro-propylene, FEP. The resultingseal combines the advantages inherent in the elasticity of the O-ring with the chemicalresistance and the sliding qualities of the fluoroplastic. This process opens up moreapplication areas for the elastomer O-ring.
Operating max. 25 MPa (250 bar) pressure:
Tempera- -60 to +200 °C with an O-ringture: made from silicon-elastomer (VMQ)
-25 to +200°C with an O-ring made from fluor-elastomer (FKM)
With dynamic applications, the total stress loa-ding made up of pressure, temperature andperipheral speed must be kept to a low level.Figure 56 shows the performance limits for thefollowing examples:
A) For continuous rotational movement at 0.2 m/s
B) For continuous linear movement at 0.2 m/sC) For static application
The FEP capsule protects the O-ring from allchemicals, solvents and gasses with a fewexceptions, namely fluid alkaline metals, somehalogen connectors and some fluors. Refer totable 58 and figure 57 for details relating to thepermeation of gasses and steam. Table 59shows data relating to the absorption of acids, alkalines and solvents in FEP.
Speed: intermittent turning, max. 1 m/scontinuous turning, max. 0.5 m/sWith reciprocating movements, these values can be doubled
Characteristics High chemical resistance, similar to PFTE Wide temperature range Physiologically safe, can be sterilised Principally intended for static seals but can
also be used for low speed rotational and linear movements
Low coefficient of friction, stick-slip free,
minimal incidence of sticking even after pro-longed standstill
Dry running is possible at low-level dynamicstress loads
Available diameters: all sizes from 10 up to 2000 mm, internal diameter
Cross-section dia.: any from 1.5 to 19 mm

For new designs and constructions, werecommend you to use the normed dimen-sions specified in ISO 3601 and SAE AS 568A,as shown in tables 55, 56 and 57. The samehousing dimensions as specified for elastomer O-rings can be used (table 64). You should usesplit grooves to avoid any possible flatteningor stretching of the seal. In some cases, largediameter rod and shaft seals can be fitted intoclosed grooves.
The best possible surface quality is necessaryfor static applications. Please refer to table 61.
At operating pressure greater than 5 MPa (50bar), concave shaped back-up rings such asSKS, SKI and SKA types should be used. Please refer to figures 59 and 60.
For the smallest internal diameters and tole-rances, please refer to tables 62 and 63.

Permeation rates of gasses
Permeation rises with the temperature and thesize of the contact surface. It falls with increa-sing FEP foil wall thickness.
Permeation ratesfor water steam
Figure 57 shows the permeability of FEP forwater steam in a time and temperature exam-ple over 24 hours at 40 °C. It rises with thetemperature and falls with the wall thicknessof the FEP capsule.
Absorption in FEP
Table 59: The absorption of strong acids, cations and solvents in the FEP capsule isvery low in comparison with other plastics andof almost no importance in practical applica-tions.

Fitting clearance
General informationsConstruction
78
The metallic contact between piston, rod andhousing must be prevented. Furrows createdby touching startup causes damage to seal, guideway and wiper and lead to leakage.
Neither seals nor wipers should be used forguiding applications. Separated guiding ele-ments must be provided for these purposes.Plastic bearing rings are usable for reciproca-ting movements.
Optimum arrangement:greatest guideway lengthBest protection of seals fromdirt and pressure shocks.
Improved guideway: bettersupport of radial force due togreater guideway length.
Guideway during reciprocatingmovement
Figure 63
Figure 64
Figure 65
Bearing rings are, as a rule, not adequate forrotating movements as the clearance heightsmust generally be kept smaller than for reci-procating movements. Ball bearings and simi-lar, very precise guideways are required.
The exact minimum clearance depends on theprecision of the guideway and the stability ofthe construction. Radial play, tilting, deflexion, pressure expansion, pressure jolting and heatexpansion should all be taken into account.
The retention of friction heat means that rota-tional sealing and wiper elements require alesser gap height than that permitted for linearapplication elements to avoid the sealing element extruding in the gap and thereforebeing destroyed.
This is indispensable for high-performanceshaft sealing rings (type 251 to 266 and 281 to 296). See figure 64.

Surfaceroughness
The surface roughness of the mating surfacehas a strong influence on leakage and the wor-king life. The aim should be for upper surfaceswhich are as smooth as shown in table 70.
Ensure that oxide ceramic plasma coatings arevoid-free and without pores (< 0.05 mm).
Hardness
Running marksForced vibrations
Constructive helpfor installation
The hardness of the mating surface influencesthe working life of the seal, bearing and wiper.Seal wear is generally less on hard mating sur-faces than on soft ones.
Soft mating surfaces can be scratched by particles of dirt. This damage in turn leads todamage to seals and leakage. With rotatorymovements, soft surfaces promote the deve-lopment of ring markings.
Short strokes following rapidly one after another and vibrating movements contribute tothe formation of running marks. In such casesthe mating surface must be hard (greater thanHRC 58).
Rods and borings must have lead-in chamfers. They are detailed in the drawings and dimensi-on tables of the insertion housings of individu-al elements.
Sealing elements, guideways and wipersshould not be shoved over sharp edges, threadtips, slanted borings, groove edges and roughsurfaces. If this cannot be constructively avoi-ded these positions must be covered duringassembly.
Small elements are difficult to fit in non-divided(closed) insertion housings. The element canbecome so badly deformed that it not longerfunctions. See table 1, column „Mounting intoclosed housings“.
Forced vibration from other components has aconsiderable influence on the formation of ringmarkings. They contribute to wear marks orare even the sole cause of such. The seal isdestroyed in extreme cases. This can apply toboth rotating and linear moving parts.
As a general rule a surface hardness of 60±2HRC applies and a minimum of 40 HRC forstainless steels.
Note: As a source of danger anti-wear coa-tings are able to affect the lifetime of sealsnegatively.

Generalinstallation advice
80
Before installation, all components and toolsshould be cleaned to remove dirt and any processing residue before being greased oroiled. Care should be taken with material com-patibility. If you are using O-rings made fromEPDM, SBR, IIR or CR, you should use a sili-con-based oil only. With rotary or swivellingmovements, the sealing parts and installationseats should be lubricated in no case.
The installationof external sealing
elements
Stretch the parts as little as possible and forthe shortest time. For this purpose, you shoulduse a thin-walled installation cone and pull thepart over as quickly as possible.
The installationof internal sealing
elements
Stretch the parts as little as possible and forthe shortest time. For this reason, the internaldiameter of the mounting sleeve should onlybe very slightly less than that of the housing.Push the sliding ring through as quickly aspossible.
Installation tools Installation tools can be supplied on request if you submit drawings of the components inquestion.
If a sliding ring or wiping ring is inserted notfar enough into the housing during installation,it must be expanded to the correct positionusing a calibration arbor before the rod is ins-erted.
Warming up the plastic element to a tempera-ture of 200 °C makes installation easier. If theexpansion caused through installation doesnot shrink back quickly enough, the seal mustbe reformed using a calibration sleeve beforeinsertion into the cylinder.
With installation where a combination of seals and an O-ring are to be used, the O-ringshould be inserted into the groove first, followed by the plastic element. With models316 and 346, as well sealing elements withflanges, it is advisable to install the sliding ringand the O-ring together in one step.
