Tuberculosis is one of the diseases towhich the government has been giving priorityin Myanmar’s National Health Plan. Tubercu-losis is known as TB and tuberculosis bacteriacause the disease and it mainly affects the lungsof the human body. There are various kinds ofTB such as bone TB, joint TB, GI track TB andcerebral TB.

The National Anti-Tuberculosis Projectwas launched in 1966-67 in Myanmar. Begin-ning 1994, TB patients have been undergoingtreatment free of charge through the DirectlyObserved Treatment Short-course (DOTS) na-tionwide.

Some TB patients themselves do not knowthat they get disease. They sometimes do notreceive effective treatment fully. The numberof patients who are immune to this disease hasincreased. This is why tuberculosis remains amajor concern in almost every country.

TB patients are being treated with theuse of potent drugs provided under the Na-tional Anti-Tuberculosis Project. Moreover,anti-tuberculosis campaign is being launchedwidely with the technological assistance andcooperation of primary health staff and otherorganizations in every township.

If someone is suspicious about the dis-ease, go to the nearest health care centres andundergo treatment until the disease is eradi-cated.

Today, improved methods of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment have greatly reducedboth the number of people who get the diseaseand the number of people who die from it.

It is necessary for all people includinghealth staff and social organizations to activelyparticipate in anti-tuberculosis activities. Onlythen will each and everyone be free from TB.

MOSCOW, 5 May —Russian immigrationchiefs on Friday proposedcompulsory languagetests for foreignerswanting to work inRussia, the latest in aseries of measures totighten up on immi-gration.

A huge influx ofmigrant workers, many ofthem Muslims from ex-Soviet republics, hascaused resentment insideRussia and many policy-

makers say it has con-tributed to a spate ofracially motivated attacks.

The Federal MigrationService said it supporteda draft law written by twopro-Kremlin members ofParliament that would seta language test for anyoneplanning to work inRussia for more than oneyear.

“We have an interestin this and support thelawmakers’ initiative,”

the service said in astatement. “It is obviousthat without knowledge ofthe Russian language it isimpossible to integrateinto Russian society.”

Several Western stateshave language require-ments in theirimmigration rules. But inmost cases it is onlypeople seeking permanent

residency, or skilledworkers, who need to sita language test.

Alexander Krutov, alawmaker with the pro-Kremlin Just Russia partyand one of the two authorsof the draft law, said theonly exception would befor foreigners working inRussia for foreign firms.

that only when there were

emphasis was to be placed

Conceived by the

LONDON, 5 May — Indiadug in its heels on Fridayover agricultural issues introubled World TradeOrganization (WTO) talksand rejected a call to bemore flexible on imports.

Commerce and Indus-try Minister Kamal Nathsaid proposals put for-ward by the chairman ofWTO farm negotiations,New Zealand’s Ambas-sador Crawford Falconer, were unbalanced anddisappointing.

In suggestions forbreaking a deadlock infarm talks, a key part of theWTO’s Doha Roundaimed at reducing tradebarriers across the board,Falconer said developingcountries would have tosoften demands to shieldup to 20 per cent of theiragricultural market fromcompetition.

“I must express

disappointment,” Nath tolda news conference. “The(Falconer) paper suffersfrom serious imbalances ...They are not payingenough attention to thelivelihoods of farmers ... indeveloping countries,” hesaid.

Nath said that Falconerhad not been demandingenough on the need for richWTO members, notablythe United States and theEuropean Union, to slashfarm subsidies which Indiaand others say distort worldmarkets.

“Subsidies bydeveloped countries causea serious challenge to thesuccessful completion ofthese talks,” he said.

Leading WTO states, among them India, say theywant a final deal in thefive-year-old Doha Round, which aims to reducepoverty and boost growth,

by the end of this year. This means a blueprintmust be agreed by August.

“I wish the round closed, but you must realize thatthe content is as importantas the completion,” Nathsaid when asked about theurgency of achieving abreakthrough.

Senior officials from theG-4 — Brazil, theEuropean Union, India andthe United States — hadthree days of talks inLondon this week before aministerial meeting inBrussels on 17-18 May.

The Brussels meetingwill be followed by threemore before mid-June bywhen the G-4, whichrepresents a range oftrading interests, hopes tohave an understandingthat will make it easier forthe full WTO membershipto agree a deal.

WASHINGTON, 5 May— NASA’s Mars RoverSpirit has discoveredevidence of an ancientvolcanic explosion at“Home Plate” area onMars, NASA scientistsreported Friday in thejournal Science.

This is the firstexplosive volcanic depositidentified with a highdegree of confidence bySpirit or its twin,Opportunity, scientists said.

“Home Plate” is aplateau of layeredbedrock approximately 2

metres high within the“Inner Basin” of ColumbiaHills, at Spirit’s landing sitein Gusev Crater.

One of the strongestpieces of evidence for anexplosive origin for HomePlate is a “bomb sag”preserved in layered rockson the lower slopes of theplateau.

Bomb sags form involcanic explosions onEarth when rocks ejectedskyward by the explosionfall into soft deposits, deforming them as theyland.

Evidence shows thearea near Home Plate isdominated by basalticrocks. “When basalterupts, it often does so asvery fluid lava, rather thanerupting explosively,”said Steve Squyres, theprincipal investigator forthe rovers’ scienceinstruments.”

One way for basalticlava to cause an explosionis for it to come intocontact with water — it’sthe pressure from thesteam that causes it to goboom.” — MNA/Xinhua
