the Only Begotten Son of God, perfect God, and perfect Man of a reasonable soul and flesh consisting; begotten before the ages of the Father according to his Divinity, and in the last days, for us and for our salvation, of Mary the Virgin according to his humanity, of the same substance with his Father according to his Divinity, and of the same substance with us according to his humanity; for there, became a union of two natures. Wherefore we confess one Christ, one Son, one Lord. According to this understanding of this unmixed union, we confess the holy Virgin to be Mother of God; because God the Word was incarnate and became Man, and from this conception he united the temple taken from her with himself. For we know the theologians make some things of the Evangelical and Apostolic teaching about the Lord common as pertaining to the one person, and other things they divide as to the two natures, and attribute the worthy ones to God on account of the Divinity of Christ, and the lowly ones on account of his humanity”.Cf.Johnof Antioch,77,172CD.Cyrilof Alexandria,77,176D–177AB.

TheHomoianswouldcomelaterwhenthe firsttwoportionswilltryto finda commonplaceto meet their views. They taught that the Son is similar to the Father. The birthof the Son isa peculiar mystery, but it is contained in the Bible. These are the leaders of the Homoians, the above-mentionedUrsakiusof Signidon(Belgrade)and Walisof Mourses, aswellasAcaciusof Caesarea of Palestine. The double interpretation and acceptanceof the “similar”was eitherapproached by the Homoiousians or the Anomoeans according to their absolute or relativeresemblanceto the Sonwiththe Father. Thus, firstly, the wordshomoousiosand homoiousios seemto havenodifference, butthe secondworddegeneratesto havesimilarnotionto thatof Arianism. The Homoiousianswanted to satisfy, regarding the issue of this doctrine both the Homoiansand Anomoeans, sotheydid,on acase-by-casebasis,byreferringto the term“homoousios”ornot. The Councilsof AriminumatWestin 358and Seleuciain theEastwereconvenedbecauseof thesesects. The leadersof the firstCouncil, whileremainingin thesymbolof Nicaea, atfirstwerefinallyforcedto acceptthe positionsof the Homoians(theSonthe Godsimilarto Godthe Fatheraccordingto the Scriptures, whosebirthnobodyhaseverbeenacquaintedwithand the samewassignedbytheirdelegatesof thematthe Councilof Seleucia.19
TheOrthodoxbishopscamebackfrom theirexile, afterthe prevalenceof Julianthe Apostateand thanksto hispolicy. The Orthodoxsand the Homoiousianswereledto an agreement.Itbecameclearthatsubstanceand hypostasisarenotthe identicalmeanings.Sotheyusedthe phrase“one substance, three hypostases”.The Homoiousiansacceptedthe completeresemblanceof the essenceof the Son and the Father. After the Council of 362, which was convened in Alexandriaby M. Athanasius, the unionof the Orthodoxand the Homoiousianswasachievedbyacceptingthe term“homoousios”.20

Thequestionswhichheposeshereare the hereticalviews, ashehasencodedand classifiedthemfrom the writingsof Epictetus.Firstlyheusesa rhetoricalquestion,“where did he come out of?” thatmeans, “where do they derive from”,hewants to show thatheprimarilydefends faith, which, ashesays, stemsfrom the teachingof JesusChristand notfrom somewhereelse.Wepresentthesehereticalviews, asrecordedbythe Alexandrianhierarchin acomprehensivereport:
1. Thebodyof Christ, whichcamefrom the VirginMary, isconsubstantialwiththe divinityof the Word.
2. Therehasbeena changeof Logosin humanelements(bones,hair,flesh,body)3. Thebodyof Christwasillusoryand notreal.234. Thecircumcisiontookplacein thedivinenatureof Christ, whichwasconsubstantialwith

Some
of the hereticsseparatedthe Wordfrom the Sonof God.24
St.Athanasiusreconstructsthe hereticalviewswiththe followingarguments:
1.The teachingsof the hereticsthatthe humanbodyof Christwasco-substantialto Godhead. It opposesto whatthe Biblesaysand the decisionof the Fathersof Nicaeathatthe GodSonisco-substantialwiththe GodFather, comingfrom hisessence, and thatthe bodycomesfrom Mary. If,itwerewhatthe hereticsusedto say, wereto betruethe Logoswhoisco-substantialto the earthlybody and is in agreement with the Father, then, in a logical sequence and consequence,

the Fatherisco-substantialto the humanbodyof Christ.In thisway,however,thereisagreementwith the Arius’sviewsthatthe Sonisa creatureand the Fatherco-substantialwiththe creatures.25
2.Ifwehadthe conversionof Wordintoa body, thenitwouldbeunnecessaryfor VirginMaryto mediate and the samewouldhappen if the body coexistedwith the Word forever. There isa substantialdowngradingand denialof the importantroleof VirginMary in theIncarnationof the Word through which the Word of God received by the human flesh. 3.Athanasius,whenheismentioningto the Passion, saysthatChristwas“the sufferer and the not-sufferer.”Hewasthe suffererwithregardto the bodyand notsuffererwithregardto the deity. The passionless Word was brought by the passive body. The salvation of man was throughthe crucifixionof Christ, and in thiswaymangainednondecayand immortality,i.e.heavoidedeternaldeath.The deity remained, as in allHis earthlypresence, indivisible to humannature, unalterableand imperishable, reachingHades,to preachto thosewhowerethere. The factsaboutthe Passion and Resurrection of Christ, aswell as his brief physical presence on earth beforeAscension, provethatthiswasa bodythatcoexistedwiththe Word.27

ConclusionsThe letter to Epictetus is a dogmatic letter in which St. Athanasius summarizes the teachingof the Church, asformulatedtillthen, aboutthe natureand the personof Christ, butalsowhathehimselfhadthoroughlyand extensivelypresentedin hispreviousdoctrinaltexts. The contentof this letter would become the bedrock of the faith that it will be used in later theologicalcontroversiesaboutthe VirginMaryand aboutthe twonaturesof Christ.Athanasiusof Alexandria, boththroughthe contentof thisletterand hisoverallwritings, isestablishednotasan occasionalwriterof theologicalissues, butasthe specialistdoctrinaireof the Incarnationof the Wordof God.He don’t present an extensive and concrete treatise on a question, since he concentrateson a seriesof questions, whichcomefrom the viewsof Appolinarianists,Doketaí(“Illusionists”)and thoseof earlyNestorianism.Buttheyendupin everythingthatM.Athanasiusseekseverytime through his teaching, that is to say, to emphasize the Incarnation of the Word of Godand hisand HisconsubstantialitywithGodthe Father, timelessly, indivisiblyand inexpressibly.Apollinaris or his followers are not named in this letter, nor are the heretical views, whichwererebuilt, contain the basicAppolinarianisticpositionon whether the Word took the placeof the human soul intoChrist. This is not because it is considered as a cover for Apollinarisora latentapollinarianistic tendencybySt.Athanasius, butbecause it ismore interestingherefor the Alexandrianhierarchto showthatthe salvationof manisconnectedwiththe Incarnationof the Wordof God.

And what the one confessed, the others also agreed to, that the Word did not, as it came to the prophets, so dwell in a holy man at the consummation of the ages, but that the Word Himself was made flesh, and being in the Form of God, took the form of a servant , and from Mary after the flesh became man for us, and that thus in Him the human race is perfectly and wholly delivered from sin and quickened from the dead, and given access to the kingdom of the heavens”.

Abstract: LABANC,Peter.Corpus Toponymicum Slovaciae Medievalis (CTSM) – On-line database of medieval toponymic material and its application in onamastic and linguistic research. Identification of localities mentioned in historical sources is one of the basiccomponents of medieval historians’ daily work. Different types of publications can beexploitedin thispractice.Aboveall, specializedgazetteersand worksaimedatsettlementreconstructionbelong to them. However, theredoesnot exist a toolwhichwould coverthe whole territory of the medieval Hungarian kingdom and within it the territoryof the present day Slovakia. Furthermore, this group of publications lacks uniformityand unification. As a result, the effective localizationof the objects is difficult and slow. The paperpresentsthe basicprinciplesof the CTSMdatabase(toponymica.sk)functioningand itssystemof populating, becausethe CTSMhasthe ambitionto resolvethe outlinedfragmentationof gazetteers. The paperalsoshowsthe possibilitiesof itsapplicationin otherscientificdisciplines, especiallyin linguisticsand onomastics.

From the overall perspective, this type of selection is mostly used in the preparationand publicationof the nationalCodexDiplomaticusand Regesta, whichnotablyappearin the 19thcentury.1

Beyondthe basictrainingof an historian, whichincludesthe abilityto handlesuchmaterial, the key point in the territorially defined heuristics is the ability to localise the geographicpropernamesfoundin specificdocuments. On a theoreticallevel, itcouldbebasedon a binaryresponsequestion:0–doesnotapplyto the territoryof Slovakia,1–doesapplyto the territoryof Slovakia. However, suchexactnessisnotknownto historicalresearch.Itisnotonlycomplicatedby the existenceof the documentswhosereference to Slovakia isonlyassumed, butespeciallyby cases where, without further research, it is impossible to determine whether it indeed isa localityon Slovakianterritory.

Besidesearlierworks,D.Csánki’sintentionof creatinga historicaltopographyof the Kingdomof Hungary during the Hunyadi dynasty began to be realised. This, however, failed to covermainly the westernpartof today’s Slovakia:Bratislava,Nitra,Ostrihom,Tekov,Turiec,Orava,Liptov,Zvolen and Hont counties (Csánki –Fekete-Nagy 1890– 1941).3The gapsof Csánki’stopography were supposed to be filled in and bridged by the editorial work based on newfoundationsunder the guidanceof an importantHungarianmedievalistGy.Györffy.The firstvolumeof the HistoricalTopography of the Kingdom of Hungaryduring the Arpad dynastywaspublished in 1963,whichdespite itsnameprocessed the materialup to the 1330s.4Twomorevolumes followed in 1987,and the fourth, so far the lastpart, waspublished in 1998(Györffy1963 – 1998).5 The work is again structured on the basis of counties in alphabetical orderby theirHungariannames. In thefirstvolumeareincludedthe Slovakianregionsof Abov,Orava(Hun.Árva)and Tekov (Hun.Bars) counties; in the second it isOstrihom(Hun.Esztergom),Gemerand Ráb(Hun.Györ); in thethird it isHontand Komárnoand finally, in thefourth itisLiptov,Mošon,Novohradand Nitracounties.Eventhe combinationof Csánkiand Györffy’stopographydoesnotguaranteecoverageof the entireterritoryof Slovakiabecausetheydo notincludegazetteersof Bratislava,Turiecand Zvolencounties. In manycasesevenCsánki’sworkisnotsufficient. That iswhyhistorianshaveto reachoutf
