Consolidated and developing sectors in Slovakia

Automotive industry

Slovakia has become one of the leading car producers in the world, thanks to the presence of three

excellent automotive companies in the country: Volkswagen Slovakia in Bratislava (since 1991), PSA

Peugeot Citroe n Slovakia in Trnava (since 2003) and Kia Motors Slovakia in Ž ilina (since 2004). Among

the most important activities of modern automotive industry development there is not only the

construction of the latest automotive plants with the latest technologies, but also the first initiatives in the

development of e-Mobility in Slovakia. In the last two years, this sector has been working with the words

“science” and “research” as basic conditions for innovation, in relation to the automotive industry, which

is highly important to the Slovak economy. However, without further R&D development, it is not possible

to improve the competitiveness of the automotive industry in Slovakia.

ICT industry

Slovakia offers many business advantages, e.g. relatively low wage costs for adaptable and educated work

force, business friendly environment and educational institutions of high quality in the field of ICT. The

CEIT (Central European Institute of Technology) in Žilina focuses on innovations in the industrial

manufacturing processes and cooperates with big companies such as Volkswagen or Whirlpool. CEIT in

Košice is connected more to research in medicine. Because of this, the ICT sector has a solid position in

the Slovak economy. This can be demonstrated by the fact that there are many foreign companies (Dell,

IBM, HP) and also strong domestic IT companies (ESET, Sygic etc.) in Slovakia.

Shared Services Centre

A shared services center is usually responsible for the execution and the treatment of specific operational

tasks from the corporate headquarters, which has to focus on leadership. The actual Shared Service

Center include Bratislava, Brno, Budapest, Prague, Krakow and Wroclaw, while Košice, Bucharest, Hradec

Králové, Trenčín, Ostrava, Sofia and others cities of the region are ready to be future top locations. SSCs

are separate business units with their own organizational structure and, often, they may even decide to

assign selected processes to an external service provider. In Slovakia, the number of SSCs is growing; they

create new jobs and bring investments to the Slovak economy.

Wood processing industry

During the last years, the situation in the Slovak wood processing industry improved a lot. The top Slovak

furniture companies, Decodom and Ekoltech, decided for new investments; German Himolla is going to

build its second factory in Slovakia and Swedish Swedwood, production daughter of Ikea, is growing

quickly. In the past, the Slovak producers focused on export but the current trend is to cover the Slovak

market. Wood processing and furniture manufacturing, as one of the strategically interesting industrial

branches in Slovakia should put more effort into quality in order to contribute to the development and

growth of the enterprises.

Aerospace industry

Slovakia's aerospace sector is an integrated part of the aerospace and defence (A&D) sector that

includes both, civil and defence/military elements. The aerospace companies operate in a global market

and depend on fair conditions in the international trade and access to markets. There are some factors,

which influence the position of Slovakia in this sector. Slovakia, as a member of the European Union and

NATO, needs advanced technologies. Most of Slovak aerospace firms focus on the ultra-light aircrafts and

aircraft turbines components. The A&D market in Slovakia has had a difficult development since the

dissolution of its biggest customer, the Soviet Union. Currently, it has still a good potential as it focuses

on the production of ammunition and artillery systems, transport vehicles, short- and long-range radar

and navigation systems and mine-clearing equipment.

Engineering industry

Slovakia is famous as a country with a long tradition of the machinery industry. It is very important to the

national economy as the engineering industry is the leading sector in Slovakia. In 2012, the biggest

engineering companies were: Volkswagen Slovakia, KIA Motors Slovakia and PCA Slovakia. Thanks to the

relatively small market, Slovakia has the highest share of employees in the medium high-tech and high-

tech production.

Chemical industry

The Slovak chemical industry produces a wide selection of refined petroleum products and petrochemical

products, basic organic and inorganic chemicals. The production of pharmaceutical products is also a part

of the chemical industry. These two sectors employ over 37 thousand people. Moreover, the chemical

industry is connected to the Slovak automotive industry and electronics production. The only two new

plants opened in 2012 were Finnish Nor-maali (paints production) and German SMP (automotive plastic

products).

Electrical engineering industry

The electrical engineering industry is one of the he fastest growing industrial sectors in Slovakia. In the

last ten years, thanks to Samsung Electronics Slovakia in Galanta, total revenues of ETI companies kept

growing with double digit dynamics. The electrotechnical industry generates almost 10 percent of the

entire industry added value. The average salary in this sector increased by almost 6 percent but people in

the lowest payment categories lost their jobs.
