High School Athletes Soon May Be
Required To Have Heart Tests
• By Kellie Patrick, Tallahassee Bureau |
March 4, 1999• TALLAHASSEE - A heart scan that might have saved the life of
a Boca Raton High School soccer player eventually could
become part of athletic physicals across the state.Key House
and Senate leaders want the state to spend $240,000 on a
Pinellas County pilot program that would use echocardiograms
to search for signs that athletes are at risk of sudden cardiac
failure.Although autopsy results are still pending, heart problems
appear to be what killed Boca Raton student Vinicius Atab, 17,
as he warmed up for a soccer game with Hallandale High on
Feb. 12The funding is being pushed by Sen. Don Sullivan, R-
Seminole, who chairs the Senate Education Budget Committee,
and House Speaker pro tem Dennis Jones, R-Seminole.
