Transcript of Consider a computing field at the University of Portland

Hi.

My name is Tanya Crenshaw.

I graduated from the University of Portland in 1998.

Given the school’s small classes, challenging program, and great faculty, my education opened a lot of doors for me.

I graduated from the University of Portland in 1998.

After graduation, I worked as a Software Engineer at Sharp Microelectronics and Wind River.

I wrote software for things like medical devices, cell phones, avionics, and global positioning systems.

After graduation, I worked as a Software Engineer at Sharp Microelectronics and Wind River.

Pretty cool stuff.

In 2002 (despite my annual salary of $68,000), it was time to follow a dream.

I wanted to be a professor...

...like the kind I had at University of Portland.

I wanted to be a professor...

I was accepted to the computer science Ph.D. program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The #5 university in the United States ...

Portland, OR to Urbana, IL

It’s the #5 graduate university in engineering....

???

...in the middle of corn country.

After six years, I’m defending my doctoral dissertation entitled, “Architectural Reference Models for Safety-Critical Systems.”

Basically, I kept studying cool stuff.

This fall, I’ll be returning to the University of Portland: This time, as a professor.

I’ll be joining a great computer science faculty, many trained at top 10 universities.

Carnegie Mellon

University of Washington

Steve Vegdahl, Ph.D. Carnegie Mellon

Karen Ward, Ph.D. Oregon Graduate Institute

Faculty who have a lot of experience teaching.

Faculty who care about their students.

Andrew Nuxoll, Ph.D. University of Michigan

Tammy VanDeGrift, PhD University of Washington

Faculty who got a Ph.D. to become great educators, not lock themselves in an laboratory to do research.

I’m totally excited!

I invite you to consider the University ofPortland for your education.

I also invite you to consider majoring in a computing field:

University of Portland offers majors in both electrical engineering and computer science.

And all engineering programs are ABET accredited.

That means that the curriculum undergoes an external review every 6 years.

So it stays current.

Nationwide, electrical engineering and computer science majors still earn some of the highest starting salaries.

Better yet, occupations in computing are projected to grow in the coming years.

So job prospects are good.

I hope to see you at the University of Portland.

You’ll be the new student. I’ll be the new professor.

It’ll be fun.
