INTRODUCTION

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Consett Junior School. Undoubtedly some of you are

new to the school, perhaps even to the area, whilst others are

familiar with the school and its aims. I would, therefore, like to

extend a warm welcome to you all, old friends and new. I trust

that you and your child will enjoy a long and happy association with

the school.

The education of your child is as important to us as it is to you.

Co-operation between home and school is vital if we are to try to

maximise the potential of every child in our care. At the start of

term, some children take a short while to acclimatise to the new

environment and routine which are required of them.

By and large, most pupils settle well and settle quickly. However,

if at any stage you have any query or worry please feel free to

contact the school for help or advice.

I trust you will find the information in this booklet useful and that

you will feel able to give your valuable support to the school. I

look forward to meeting you on many occasions in the coming years.

Yours sincerely,

Amy Willmot. Headteacher.

THE SCHOOL

Consett Junior School was opened in 1975 as a modern purpose built

open plan school. The school serves the town of Consett and also

attracts pupils from Delves Lane, Shotley Bridge, Blackhill, Moorside

and Leadgate. The schools tree lined grounds include a large play yard

as well as an extensive field and memorial garden.

The school is proud of its high academic, musical, technical, artistic and

sporting achievements in an environment where learning is an enjoyable

and rewarding experience.

All children are encouraged to take a pride both in themselves and in

their school.

The school is extremely well resourced to meet the demands of the

National Curriculum and prepares children well for National Tests and

develops the skills necessary for life in the twenty first century.

On transfer from school most pupils attend Consett Academy where

the majority go on to achieve excellent qualifications.

Transfers on 1st September 2011 were:

THE ORGANISATION

The school is organised into 8 classes. The classes form the basis of

the teaching groups utilised during the year. At different times

children will be expected to work in small or large groups, in class

situations and individually. Pupils are encouraged to become more

independent and responsible as they progress through the school as

this is a specific skill which they will require in order to tackle work in

the next stage of their school life.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

‘We are a caring, sharing school community made up of individuals with

particular needs, interests and aptitudes, each with a common purpose

to celebrate individual achievements and through a common goal achieve

the highest possible educational standards for all’.

School Statement of Intent

Aims

1. To provide an attractive, well structured and stimulating

environment which each child can develop at their own rate

according to their own capabilities.

Page 8: Consett Junior School€¦ · School Brochure June 2012 . INTRODUCTION Dear Parents, Welcome to Consett Junior School. Undoubtedly some of you are new to the school, perhaps even

-7-

2. To help each child develop into a well balanced caring individual

who will fulfil his/her full potential and be well prepared for

the future at school, at work, at home and in the community.

3. To help the child develop responsible attitudes to and respect

for other people and property and so gain a broader

understanding of the needs and aspirations of others and the

role of the community in their lives.

Objectives

1. To provide child centred inclusive education

2. To balance the curriculum, focusing on the development of

skills and knowledge managing information from a variety of

sources.

3. To encourage, enable, and allow within the classroom

situation children to work individually/in small groups under

the direction of the staff at the speed the teacher knows is

right for them.

4. To provide a caring, happy and flexible school environment

to help develop in each child good working attitudes, and

encourage the highest academic standards.

5. To create an interest in and enjoyment of learning.

6. To encourage happy, stable relationships within the school.

As you can see from the Aims and Objectives above, we in this school

believe each child to be an individual. The primary phase in a child’s

education is a period of rapid physical, mental and emotional growth and

through a practical approach to education children can be given the

confidence to cope with situations and build their self esteem.

CURRICULUM

The school seeks to provide all pupils with a broad, balanced and

relevant curriculum suited to their individual needs. The aim of the

school curriculum is to encourage pupils to become competent, self-

reliant children with a knowledge of the world about them.

In order to achieve this the school places great value on the traditional

skills of Literacy and Numeracy as well as expertise in the fields of

Science, Arts, Environmental Studies, Information and Communication

Technology Studies, and Physical Education. The school curriculum

includes all the elements of the National Curriculum and statutory

Religious Education, but also includes Environmental Education,

Education for Leisure and other cross curricular themes including

Personal, Social and Health Education.

CURRICULUM ORGANISATION

The National Curriculum is described in terms of separate subjects by

much of the documentation which has been published recently. Whilst

the National Curriculum is taught and covered by the school, the

subjects may or may not appear as separate named subjects on your

child’s timetable. For example a considerable amount of English work

takes place during lessons which may be labelled Art, Drama or Science.

Similarly, topic or thematic work provides pupils with the opportunity

to study aspects of History, Geography, Science and Technology and

Information Technology. During the course of the year pupils will

receive a balanced curriculum though at different stages of the year

there may be a different degree of emphasis (and, therefore, time)

allocated to each curriculum area. The National Curriculum as delivered

in this school is a legal requirement and ordinarily, no pupil may be

excused it.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION/COLLECTIVE WORKSHIP

Religious Education plays a central part in our curriculum. Our aims

are:-

1. To stimulate spiritual growth by providing an attractive and

challenging environment where children are cared for,

understood, valued and accepted for who they are; where

standards are consistent.

2. To help children adopt patterns of behaviour which take other

peoples needs, interests and feelings into account as well as

their own so developing a considerate lifestyle.

3. To be aware of other beliefs and religions as well as

Christianity and how these impact on the way people live in the

modern world.

Religious Education here is concerned with the relationships and quality

of life within the school and community. In our attitudes to each other

and our genuine concern for children we seek to build a caring

community in which standards of behaviour are being established based

on the conviction that individuals are to be respected as persons.

Any parents who wish their child to be exempt from this type of

Religious Education are asked to get in touch with the Headteacher.

SEX AND RELATIONSHIP EDUCATION

The School Governors have determined that, in accordance with LA

guidelines Sex and Relationship Education should form part of the

educational provision made for pupils at the school. This is gradually

introduced by means of a larger, more extensive topic on Health

Education. Some of the work involves the School Nurse at key points

over the four years of Junior School, other topics occur as part of the

Science curriculum.

Page 11: Consett Junior School€¦ · School Brochure June 2012 . INTRODUCTION Dear Parents, Welcome to Consett Junior School. Undoubtedly some of you are new to the school, perhaps even

-10-

HOMEWORK

All children attending Consett Junior School will be set homework on a

regular basis in order to extend the work carried out during normal

working hours. Such work will include practice and tables work in

Maths, spellings, reading and handwriting practice in English and

research work using home computers/books in Science, History etc.

A Homework Guide has been produced by the school and is available to

all parents. This guide simply explains why homework is set and how

you, the parents, can help your own children and ‘understand’ the work

yourselves.

MARKING POLICY

The school operates a carefully considered and structured marking

scheme designed to help pupils understand why their work is incorrect.

It is not helpful for pupils to have all of their errors highlighted all of

the time, especially in areas where they might be experiencing great

difficulty or where there is little confidence.

The school has a policy whereby more of the errors detected may be

highlighted as the child progresses through the school. By adopting

this approach it is hoped to focus the child’s attention upon one or two

areas of concern at a time rather than swamp them with too much

detail which may confuse or demotivate.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS/LEARNING DISABILITIES

Most pupils experience difficulties at some stage during their

educational career. Specific difficulties are dealt with individually or

in small group situations. In most cases children encountering problems

Page 12: Consett Junior School€¦ · School Brochure June 2012 . INTRODUCTION Dear Parents, Welcome to Consett Junior School. Undoubtedly some of you are new to the school, perhaps even

-11-

will remain working within the class on work which has been carefully

tailored to their needs. In certain circumstances it may be possible to

provide some additional form of support by means of an extra teacher

or support assistant within the classroom. On other occasions a child

may be withdrawn from the class in order to benefit from small group

or individual attention. There is no single rule or approach adopted as

the needs vary greatly. Parents of pupils thought likely to benefit from

additional support are contacted by the school and invited to discuss

the issues and share their concerns.

If the school is unable to meet the needs of the pupil despite having

varied the provision made, additional help and advice may be necessary.

Parents will be invited to discuss the matter further and to help make

an assessment of the situation. If necessary the services of

professionals from outside the school may be requested. No outside

agencies are involved without the full agreement of the parents.

PARENTAL CO-OPERATION

We can only hope to achieve our aims for the children if their

education is regarded as the dual responsibility of parents and

teachers. At intervals during the school year parents will be invited

into school to discuss their child’s progress. These meetings provide an

opportunity for parents and staff to get to know one another and to

exchange views/observations. It should be emphasised, however, that

these formal meetings are not the only opportunities parents have to

speak with staff. Parents are welcome to make an appointment to

speak with teachers at any time during the school year if they have

issues of concern.

Many parents assist in school in a wide range of activities. Parental

help is much appreciated. Those wishing to help should contact Mrs. M.

Smith or Mrs. A. Willmot.

-12-

MANAGEMENT OF BEHAVIOUR AND DISCIPLINE

It is generally recognised that children may only reach a high standard

of achievement when they are working in a constructive, industrious

atmosphere. Children are expected to conduct themselves in a suitable

manner at all times and to have particular regard for the safety and

well-being of others.

Breaches of discipline are dealt with by the class teacher. In more

serious cases a child may be sent to the Deputy Headteacher or

Headteacher. Most incidents are successfully dealt with in this way

but on occasions it may be necessary to ask parents to visit school so

the issues can be discussed in a calm, constructive and supportive way.

MUSIC TUITION

A small number of pupils may benefit from the specialist tuition

provided by the Peripatetic Music Service. For those selected to play

an instrument it has to be remembered that much of the work is

undertaken in the pupils and teachers own time. The nature of the

work requires a considerable degree of commitment on the part of all

concerned.

The school also has its own Brass Band, and Choir taught by

Mr. Jackson. These groups play regularly in school for coffee mornings

etc. and are invited to events in the local community, especially at

Christmas, but increasingly at other times of the year.

SPORTING AIMS

Sport in school should help to contribute to the overall education of

young people by helping them to lead full and valuable lives through

engaging in purposeful physical activity.

Page 14: Consett Junior School€¦ · School Brochure June 2012 . INTRODUCTION Dear Parents, Welcome to Consett Junior School. Undoubtedly some of you are new to the school, perhaps even

-13-

Through a balanced programme of physical education children learn

about their bodies and discover their physical potential.

Through physical education we aim to develop social, interpersonal and

cognitive skills by encouraging pupils to:-

• Participate in meaningful physical activities thus developing

physical competence.

• Participate in physical activity while promoting physical

development.

• Develop confidence and self esteem so experiencing success in a

variety of physical activities.

• Be aware of personal safety and the importance of this when

participating in physical activities.

• Develop aesthetic and artistic awareness through the use of

movement.

The school offers opportunities to fulfil all the above through a wide

range of sporting activity. As part of the Derwentside Sports

Partnership in the last few years pupils have access to a range of

coaching skill and competitions.

PE/GAMES

All children are expected to take part in PE and Games which are part

of the National Curriculum. Jewellery should not be worn in school and

watches should be removed for reasons of safety. If earrings have to

be left in for any reason they should be covered by a plasters or tape,

this includes studs, please provide these from home. Pupils are

expected to dress appropriately for lessons. Children are not

encouraged to wear their PE clothing underneath their normal clothing

before or after lessons.

Page 15: Consett Junior School€¦ · School Brochure June 2012 . INTRODUCTION Dear Parents, Welcome to Consett Junior School. Undoubtedly some of you are new to the school, perhaps even

-14-

Appropriate clothing is as follows:

Plain black or blue shorts/jogging bottoms.

Plain white T-Shirt.

A pair of Gym/Training shoes.

Footwear should be suitable for use outside on the playground or

the field. Pupils need different shoes for PE and not the same

shoes worn for the school day.

SWIMMING

The school is able to offer swimming tuition to all children in Years 3

and 4. Please note that where swimming is provided as part of the

curriculum for any child it is a compulsory element within the timetable

unless there are specific medical reasons for the child not taking part.

A written note from a parent must be sent to the Headteacher if a

child is not swimming and they will remain in school with the other class.

All pupils not collected from the baths by 3.45 p.m. will be brought

back to school where they can be supervised.

Swimwear for swimming lessons does not include bikinis or over-sized

shorts.

MEDICAL

Please notify the school of any special medical problems which may

affect your child whilst at school. During school hour’s minor cuts,

scrapes etc. are treated at school. In the event of a serious accident

(e.g. suspected broken arm) parents will be immediately contacted. If

no contact can be made the child will be taken to the Medical Centre

then on to Shotley Bridge or University Hospital Durham for treatment

Page 16: Consett Junior School€¦ · School Brochure June 2012 . INTRODUCTION Dear Parents, Welcome to Consett Junior School. Undoubtedly some of you are new to the school, perhaps even

-15-

to begin and school will continue to contact parents. Please ensure

that emergency contact details are accurate and up-dated regularly.

MEDICINES

Due to new Government regulations we have had to make the decision

to stop all medication within school with the only exceptions to the rule

being the treatment of Allergies, Asthma and Diabetes. If a child

needs to take antibiotics four times a day a parent/grandparent can

call at lunchtime and bring the medicine to give to their child.

No child is permitted to have medication in his/her possession. If your

child contracts an infectious disease such as whooping cough, measles,

mumps or chicken pox, please check with your doctor to establish when

it is safe for your child to return to school without putting other pupils

at risk. Children who are ill with sickness and diarrhoea should be kept

off school for 48 hours.

SCHOOL HOURS

Morning Session 8.55 a.m. – 12 noon

Lunch 12.00 – 12.55 p.m.

Afternoon Session 12.55 – 3.30 p.m.

ATTENDANCE

We place a strong emphasis on good attendance, and regular attendance

at school is important but in cases of unavoidable absence parents

should keep the school well informed as to the reason for a child’s

absence. Particularly if it is likely to be prolonged. A telephone call or

email on the first day of absence is preferred as letters are often not

handed in. Failure to inform the school of an absence will now by law

result in the child being recorded as absent without authorisation and

Page 17: Consett Junior School€¦ · School Brochure June 2012 . INTRODUCTION Dear Parents, Welcome to Consett Junior School. Undoubtedly some of you are new to the school, perhaps even

-16-

will appear as such on the child’s school records. If no message is

received by 10.30 a.m. you will receive a text message to find out the

reason for absence.

Where no information has been received from the parent the Education

Welfare Officer will be asked to visit the home to enquire into the

cause of the absence. In the school year 2011/12 the total school

unauthorised absence figure was 0.31%. A certificate and book token

is given to children with 100% attendance for the full school year

(September to July). According to OFSTED 94% attendance is

acceptable; any absence below 85% will be referred to the Education

Welfare Officer.

Parents collecting children needing medical treatment during school

hours (e.g. visit to dentist or doctors) are asked to call at the school

office rather than the classroom. This enables an exact record of

pupils on site to be maintained. This information is important in case of

emergency or fire drills. Please note that no child will be allowed to

leave school early unaccompanied. No child will be sent home

unescorted during school hours and must be collected by a responsible

adult from the main entrance.

FAMILY HOLIDAYS

By law children should attend school for 190 days in a school year. Any

holiday taken during term time will need to be authorised by the

Headteacher. This request should be in writing and a letter confirming

agreement will be sent in return. No child will be allowed more than 10

school days holiday in a school year (September to July) as authorised

absence.

Page 18: Consett Junior School€¦ · School Brochure June 2012 . INTRODUCTION Dear Parents, Welcome to Consett Junior School. Undoubtedly some of you are new to the school, perhaps even

-17-

EMERGENCY CONTACT

It is very important that we should be able to make contact with

parents or a named responsible adult in case of an emergency. Parents

are asked to complete an information sheet which the school can refer

to in such a situation. If there is no telephone at home the number of a

near relative or friend would be appreciated.

If parents change addresses, telephone/mobile numbers, or their place

of work they should notify school of such changes as soon as possible.

Now we use Call Parent to send text messages to parents it is even

more important that we are regularly updated with new mobile numbers.

SCHOOL MEALS

School meals are cooked and served on the premises. These prove

popular with the children being both nutritious and value for money.

Special menus for children with certain medical conditions are also

provided in consultation with both parents, medical practitioners and

the school cook. Packed lunches are also allowed provided we are

informed in writing of your wish to provide these, preferably two weeks

in advance. It must be understood that the responsibility for the

safety and condition of packed lunches lies with the child. Advice on

the nutritional content of packed lunches is available from school. Hot

food in flasks (e.g. soups, pot noodles, hot chocolate) is not allowed in

school.

All children staying for lunch must not leave the premises without the

permission of the Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher.

DINNER MONEY

As from 1st September 2012 school meals will be £1.50 per day, £7.50

for the week. We need to have two weeks notice if anyone changes

Page 19: Consett Junior School€¦ · School Brochure June 2012 . INTRODUCTION Dear Parents, Welcome to Consett Junior School. Undoubtedly some of you are new to the school, perhaps even

-18-

from meals to packed lunches as children cannot swop and change

during the week – they must have either a meal or packed lunch for the

whole week.

FRUIT SNACK BAR

School operates a fruit bar as part of our Healthy Schools Policy.

Children can purchase fruit at morning break for 25p per item.

BREAKFAST CLUB

We also have a daily Breakfast Club with supervision (£1.50 per day),

starting at 8.00 a.m. until 8.40 a.m. Children should not arrive before

8.00 a.m. and need to come to the main entrance to be admitted and

signed in, children remain in the hall until 8.30 a.m. when they are taken

out into the school yard under supervision. Please make sure your child

pays the £1.50 on the day they stay, if your child stays everyday you

can pay the full amount on the Monday if this is easier for you.

Children who do not come for Breakfast Club should not be on the

school premises before 8.40 a.m.

SUPERVISION

Children staying at school for lunch are supervised by ‘Lunchtime

Supervisors’. It must be clearly understood that the children must

conform to acceptable standards of behaviour both in and out of the

Dining Hall.

SCHOOL SECURITY

The very design of the school building means that no member of the

school staff or pupils need be out of sight of others while in class

areas. All entrance doors are fitted with one way security locks. As

such they prevent entry from outside the building while still allowing a

quick form of exit from inside the building in case of fire etc. All

Page 20: Consett Junior School€¦ · School Brochure June 2012 . INTRODUCTION Dear Parents, Welcome to Consett Junior School. Undoubtedly some of you are new to the school, perhaps even

-19-

visitors, including parents, must report to the main entrance at all

times of the school day. Under no circumstances are parents or

relatives allowed onto the school playground when the children are

outside. This is to ensure the safety of all children.

Visitors to the school cannot gain entry but need to gain access via the

main school entrance. A notice on the door requires visitors to ring the

bell to be admitted. Workmen to school will be required to provide

some form of identification, usually through the County Councils I.D.

card. Once admitted visitors will be asked to sign the visitor’s book and

note the times of arrival/departure.

PLAYGROUND SECURITY

When children are allowed out at breaktimes at least two members of

staff at any one time will be on duty. If there is cause for concern

relating to strangers around the school, stray dogs etc. a message will

be conveyed to the Headteacher who will investigate. Once children

are brought back into school at the end of break times the staff on

duty will ensure that the door is closed and locked. At lunchtime the

same system will be in operation except that at least two lunchtime

supervisors will be on duty as well as the Headteacher/Deputy

Headteacher who will be in overall charge.

BUILDINGS SECURITY

A risk assessment survey is carried out on an annual basis.

UNAVOIDABLE CLOSURE

Whilst we hope it will never be necessary, there may be occasions when,

due to circumstances beyond our control, it is necessary to close the

school. In times of severe weather or heating breakdowns we may have

Page 21: Consett Junior School€¦ · School Brochure June 2012 . INTRODUCTION Dear Parents, Welcome to Consett Junior School. Undoubtedly some of you are new to the school, perhaps even

-20-

very little notice of such closure. Should it be necessary to close the

school we will send a text message and display a notice in a prominent

position near the front entrance to the school. A message will also

appear on the school website. Information may also be broadcast on

local radio and school website. If in doubt parents should telephone

the school. When possible notice of school closure will be broadcast by

Radio Newcastle.

PERSONAL PROPERTY IN SCHOOL

Children are not required to wear jewellery or expected to bring

valuable personal items to school. The school cannot accept

responsibility for loss of, or damage to any such items. Whilst

teachers may from time to time hold valuables for pupils (e.g. during PE

lessons) the responsibility for valuables remains with pupils at all times.

Parents are strongly recommended not to allow their children to bring

anything of value to school, including mobile phones or any electronic

games.

DATA PROTECTION

Information on the Data Protection Act is issued to parents in the new

starters packs given to all children on their day visit before starting

school in September.

LINKS WITH THE COMMUNITY

Business/Education Links

A major achievement over the last eight years has been the school’s

recognition as an ‘Investor in People’ a national award recognising

overall investment in pupils, staff and outside agencies.

Over the past two years we have consolidated links as well as

developing new initiatives. There is also a good link with the various

Page 22: Consett Junior School€¦ · School Brochure June 2012 . INTRODUCTION Dear Parents, Welcome to Consett Junior School. Undoubtedly some of you are new to the school, perhaps even

-21-

departments the local Council, an invaluable source of information on

the varied aspects of community life.

Visits to the Consett Academy continue to provide insight into the

working of both schools for both staff and pupils. Good links between

staff ensure that provision is enhanced for both schools and transition

is well supported with secondary and with feeder infant schools. Year

5 visit Consett Infants to meet Year 2 pupils and make friends.

Other Community Links

Children in the Brass Band regularly play at the local Care Homes and at

events held in the community.

The school has been involved over the last few years with events and

developments at Consett and Blackhill Park and will continue these with

the establishment of the new Heritage Centre and classroom.

New links have been made since 2009, where representatives from the

business community come into school to work with pupils and staff.

SCHOOL CLOTHING

The school has a uniform which we hope parents will provide consisting

of:

GIRLS

Royal Blue Sweatshirt

Grey or Black Skirt/Trousers

Gold Polo Shirt

Blue/White Dress (optional summer only)

Page 23: Consett Junior School€¦ · School Brochure June 2012 . INTRODUCTION Dear Parents, Welcome to Consett Junior School. Undoubtedly some of you are new to the school, perhaps even

BOYS

Royal Blue Sweatshirt

Grey or Black Trousers

Gold Polo Shirt

Black or Grey Shorts (optional summer only)

Black shoes should be worn with school uniform (no white or

coloured trainers except for PE).

Royal Blue Sweatshirts, Gold Polo Shirts, Royal Blue Sweatcardigans, PE

Shirts/Shorts/String Bag, Pinafore Dresses, Tracksuits, Reversible

Waterproof Jackets, Fleece Jackets, School Bags and Hats can be

ordered from school. A supply of Sweatshirts and Polo Shirts are kept

in school, other items can be ordered at any time by contacting school

for an order form. All of these garments offer excellent value for

money and are made from hard wearing, machine washable fabrics,

specially decorated with our school logo. It would be helpful if all items

of children’s clothing had the child’s name clearly marked on them.

The wearing of earrings is not allowed in school.

15th April to 24th May

3rd June to 19th July

BRINGING CHILDREN TO SCHOOL

Would drivers please note that if transporting children to school the

school operates a voluntary one way system from 8.45 – 9.00 a.m. and

3.15 – 3.40 p.m. Cars entering Beechdale Road are requested to follow

a one way system along Elmdale Road onto Oakdale Road, children can

be dropped off and collected on Oakdale Road and then cars continue

back along Beechdale Road. Unfortunately we do have a problem with

parking in the vicinity of the school. Many parents now park on Ashdale

Road or at Belle Vue Leisure Centre and walk down to meet their

children. Please note the requests below to ensure that your child can

enter and leave school in safety.

• Do not block driveways to houses or park on pavements when

collecting children.

• Observe the “No Unauthorised Vehicles beyond this point”

sign and the yellow zigzag lines (“Keep Clear”).

• Do not bring cars into the school drive – even to turn around.

(Unless there are medical reasons).

• Inform anyone who will be bringing or collecting your child

(including taxis) of these rules and one way system.

ASSESSMENT

The school’s Assessment, Planning, Recording, Monitoring and Reporting

Policy is reviewed annually (last review March 2012). Half termly

assessment tasks are carried out for all children in the core subjects.

The SAT’s results for 2011 were as follows:-
