Introduction• Plants and animals (birds) brighten our lives. There are no. of species of plants and animals on earth from millions of years.• In the last few hundred years ,they began to extinct due to many human activities.

Why Is Wildlife In Danger?1. Habitat Destruction-

Factors contributing to habitat loss are: overpopulation, deforestation,  pollution and climate change.

2. Overexploitation- This occurs in the form of overhunting and the illegal wildlife trade.

3. Climate Change- Global warming is also

considered to be a major threat to global biodiversity as it harms their body as well as habitat.

4. Human Overpopulation- The massive growth in the human population through the 20th century has had more impact on biodiversity than any other single factor as plants and animals have no place to live.

Endangered Species• An endangered species is a

population of organisms which is facing a high risk of becoming extinct.

• In India 149 species of plants and animals are listed as endangered by IUCN’s Red List.

• 9,713 known species in the world have been identified as endangered or critically endangered.

Endangered In India

1. White- Rumped Vulture

• This species was very common, especially in the Gangetic plains of India.• It declined rapidly in numbers since

1990s up to 99.9 % between 1992 and 2007.• The decline has been widely

attributed to poisoning by diclofenac leaving traces in cattle carcasses.

• For conservation of White Rumped Vulture-

1. Campaigns to ban the use of diclofenac in veterinary practice have been underway.

2. Conservation measures have included reintroduction, captive-breeding programs and artificial feeding.

2.Royal Bengal Tiger• The Bengal tiger is native to

the Bengal region, and is the national animal of India and Bangladesh.• Tigers are widely distributed

throughout the India.• Based on the result of the surveys in

2008, the total tiger population has been estimated at 1,411 individuals.

• The decline in Tiger’s population is due to the following-

1.Habitat and prey loss.2.Hunting, poaching and illegal trade.3.Conflict with humans.• In 1972, Project Tiger was launched

aiming at ensuring a viable population of tigers in the country. • There are 15 reserves covering an

area of 24,700 square kms.

Endangered In World

1. Amur Leopard• The Amur leopard is native to the Primorye region of south -eastern Russia.•  There are only 26 Amur Leopard left as per 2007 census.

• Amur leopards are threatened by-1.Poaching2.Encroaching civilization3.Exploitation of forests4.Climate change• The Amur Leopard and Tiger

Alliance (ALTA) is an initiative to conserve the Amur leopard and Amur tiger.

• The ministry of Russia is planning to introduce new "imported" Amur leopards.

2. Grandidier's baobab• Grandidier's baobab is the biggest

and most famous of Madagascar's six species of baobabs.•  This imposing and unusual tree

is endemic to the island of Madagascar.• Today it is mainly found in open,

agricultural land or degraded scrubland.

• The greatest threat to this species has come from the transformation of its forest habitat into agricultural land.• The President of Madagascar vowed to triple the amount of protected areas, a measure which may benefit the Grandidier's baobab.

Why Should We Protect Wildlife?• They maintain ecological

balance for supporting life.• Plants and animals hold

medicinal, agricultural, ecological, commercial value.• They must be protected so that

future generations can experience their presence and value.

What Have We Done To Protect Them?

Conservation In India

• The Wildlife Conservation Act was enacted by the Government of India in 1972.

• There are 102 national parks, over 441 wildlife sanctuaries and 17 biosphere reserves in India.

• The Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 refers to a sweeping package of legislation enacted in 1972 by the Government of India.

International Union For Conservation Of Nature

• It is an international organization dedicated to finding solutions to environment and development challenges.

• The organization publishes the IUCN Red List, to rate which species are most endangered.

What Can We Do To Conserve Them?

1. Recycle and Reduce Energy and Goods Consumption

2. Join a Conservation Organization3. Minimize use of Herbicides and

Pesticides4. Slow Down When Driving5. Voice Your Concerns and Get Involved
