WILD LIFE SANCTUARIES It is an initiative to conserve wild life

animals. Provides opportunity for wild

animals to live in their natural habitat.

Controlled interference of man without harming the environment and free life of animals.

E.g. chenthuruni and periyar wild life sanctuaries

Periyar wild life sanctuary

NATIONAL PARK They are extensive forests which

maintain the original beauty and complexity of nature.

No kind of human intervention is allowed. All organisms are given opportunities to

live as part of nature. They are rich storehouses of biological

wealth. E.g. Eravikulam and silent valley

BIOSPHERE RESERVES They are replicas of the biosphere. These include many national park and

wild life sanctuaries. No human activities is allowed in the

core zone of it . The buffer zone around the core zone

will contain many natural resources. These resources can be utilized for

studies and researches.

The outer most region is the transition zone in which people can live .

And also human interventions are allowed here.

EX – SITU CONSERVATION

ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS Wild animals are kept protect under

artificial condition. Freedom and natural condition of wild

animals cannot be provided to fullest extent.

They give protection to wild animals facing the threat of extinction.

E.g. zoo at thiruvananthapuram.

BOTANICAL GARDENS These are scientifically designed

gardens. They aim at protecting plant species. They are different from ordinary

gardens. The plants are classified and labelled

giving information about them such as family , generic and species name.

E.g. TBGRI ,palode at tvm

BOTANICAL GARDENS

GENE BANKS These are modern technological

system. They collect and preserve genes of

adult organisms. Genes are the factors that decide the

characters of an organism. Gene banks are many kind , namely

seed bank , sperm bank etc. The organisms can be recreated when

required. Thus their extinction can be prevented.
