Why Now?

“As human beings, we are amazingly adaptable and creative, yet most of us work for companies that are not. In other words, we

work for organizations that aren't very human.” (Gary Hamel)

“Sit in on a typical management meeting --- to discuss strategy, budgets, employees, or anything else --- and not only will you observe a distinct lack of right-brain thinking, you’ll also hear virtually nothing that suggests that participants have hearts.

Beauty. Truth. Love. Service. Wisdom. Justice. Freedom. Compassion. These are the moral imperatives that have aroused human beings to extraordinary accomplishment down through

the ages.” (Gary Hamel)

The Human Element

While many business movements strictly adopt a single perspective — some focus on the so-called “softer” aspects (culture, leadership, etc.) while others focus on the so-called “harder” aspects (mechanics) of human dynamics — we have

remained agnostic and embrace an all-inclusive viewpoint, integrating relevant perspectives yet keeping the “human

element” paramount.

Not to discount any particular movement, but any myopic viewpoint often obscures reality and the importance of the “human element;” and while all business movements would

readily argue that they don’t elevate their “particulars” over the “human element” — experience leads us to conclude otherwise!

Conscious Agility

Emerges from Conscious Capitalism, Business Agility, and Antifragility

and our individual and collective experience fully rooted in decades of practice across many industries

A design-thinking approach for business ecosystems that integrates awareness

with intuition, orientation, and improvisation so that individuals and collectives

may benefit from uncertainty, disorder, and the unknown.

Ecosystem and Stakeholders

• An Ecosystem is a collection of stakeholders, including their environment (as a stakeholder), and their conversations where stakeholders are united by compatible values, a shared purpose, and an orientation towards co-creating value.

• A Stakeholder is an entity who impacts or is impacted by other stakeholders. Stakeholder identity is central to how stakeholders are being a part of an ecosystem and doing something within the ecosystem; that is, working together within the ecosystem.

13

Identity and Conversations

• Identity encapsulates awareness and ownership.

– Awareness involves stakeholders being conscious of themselves and one another.

– Ownership involves stakeholders embracing how they impact or are impacted by other stakeholders within the ecosystem.

– Identity should not be confused with ego, which is focused only on the “self.”

• A Conversation is an exchange between stakeholders. Conversations are purposeful, value-oriented, and values-based.

14

Values, Purpose, Value, & Conversation Clusters

• Values are tenets that stakeholders consider meaningful. Individual stakeholders unite based on compatible values.

• Purpose is the reason or “why” stakeholders form an ecosystem. Individual stakeholders unite around a shared purpose.

• Value is worth that stakeholders experience. Individual stakeholders unite with an orientation towards co-creating value.

• A Conversation Cluster is a collection of conversations.

15

Canvas

• A Canvas is a description of reality

• Each Conscious Agility initiative begins with a fresh canvas – First gaining shape, perspective, and breadth

(for example, as a sketch)

– Then contrast and depth (for example, shading the sketch)

– And finally detail and focus (for example, texturing the shaded sketch)

16

Conscious Agility Initiative

• A Conscious Agility initiative (cycle) as an approach focuses on “fundamental change” (or renewal), which is uniquely

– Organic, simultaneous, and holistic

– Address a business perspective, organizational perspective, and culture perspective while being

– Business or industry domain agnostic and technology agnostic

– May be combined with other approaches

17

Conscious Agility Initiative

• A Conscious Agility initiative is organized into

– A cycle of phases

• Generally sequential

• But may overlap

– Phases are composed of conversation clusters

– Conversation clusters are composed of conversations

• May occur in any order and as many times to achieve phase objectives

• Focus on addressing questions that activate how people relate & behave

19

Define Phase

• Foster awareness of stakeholders, envision an improved way of working together, and establish clarity around the initiative

• Establish a Design Team: Launch the initiative with a team of individuals who represent the stakeholders within the ecosystem – Identify Stakeholders – Build the Design Team – Kick-off

• Discover a “minimal” Ecosystem Definition: Establish design team ownership of a path forward toward an improved way of working that is considerate of all stakeholders – Explore Today – Explore Tomorrow – Explore the Path from Today to Tomorrow – Call to Action

20

Create Phase

• Achieve greater awareness, intuition, orientation, and improvisation by evolving the ecosystem; enacting shared experiences, while also integrating stakeholders

• Enact Experiences: Exercise and evolve the new way of working – Examine Experiences

– Refine the Canvas

• Integrate Stakeholders: Exercise and evolve a new way of organizing – Explore how best to Organize

– Organize and Refine

21

Refine Phase

• Ensure stakeholders have sufficiently evolved the ecosystem to nurture continued success, allowing for the initiative to draw to closure

• Embrace Experiences: Ensure that the new way of working is embraced by all stakeholders and reflects stakeholder experiences within the ecosystem – Examine Experiences – Embody Canvas

• Nurture Stakeholders: Ensure that the ecosystem has fully integrated the new way of organizing and is nurturing all stakeholders – Explore how best to Nurture – Nurture and Refine
