Estimado lector, es un verdadero placer para la CONPASA presentarles la tercera edición de nuestro e-Magazine, esta edición impresa con motivo de

nuestra Asamblea y Congreso WBSC Division Softbol. Esta revista que usted tiene hoy entre sus manos no sólo es la primera edición impresa de esta publicación, sino que además representa la materialización palpable de nuestra visión a futuro: una CONPASA moderna y atractiva, que sea una organización líder en el mundo de nuestro deporte.

El Softbol ha recibido muy buenas noticias en los últimos días. El Comité Organizador de Tokio 2020 propuso al Softbol Femenino como uno de los eventos a ser incorporado en el programa de los Juegos. Esto reafirma el excelente trabajo que está realizando la Confederación Mundial de Béisbol y Softbol (WBSC) para devolver a nuestro deporte al lugar al que pertenece. Estamos un paso más cerca de los Juegos Olímpicos, aunque todavía resta mucho trabajo por delante. Ojalá que al final del camino podamos ver en Tokio un diamante de Softbol coronado con la bandera y los anillos olímpicos.

Dear reader, it is a real pleasure for CONPASA to present the third edition of our e-Magazine, printed this time in occasion of our Assembly

and the WBSC Softball Division Congress. This magazine is not only the first printed edition of this publication, but also represents a tangible realization of our vision for the future: a modern and attractive CONPASA, being a leader organization in the world of our sport.

Softball has received very good news in the recent days. Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee proposed the Women’s Softball as one of the events to be incorporated into the programme of the Games. This confirms the excellent work being done by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) to reinstate our sport where it belongs. We are one step closer to the Olympics, but too much work still remains ahead. Hopefully we can see a Softball diamond in Tokyo crowned with the Olympic flag and the rings.

En esta edición encontrará una breve reseña sobre la historia del Softbol en relación a los Juegos Olímpicos, desde el reconocimiento de la ISF por parte del Comité Olímpico Internacional en 1977, hasta la Agenda 2020, que le ha abierto nuevamente al Softbol la puerta de los Juegos Olímpicos. Una nota que no solo servirá para comunicar las últimas novedades sobre este tema, sino más bien para contextualizar la lucha que ha librado el Softbol desde hace décadas por ser parte del evento deportivo más importante del mundo.

Además, en los últimos tres meses hemos vivido una excelente temporada de eventos internacionales, con la disputa de los Juegos Panamericanos de Toronto 2015, y dos Campeonatos Mundiales.

Toronto fue la casa del deporte de las Américas durante catorce días. La hospitalidad, el profesionalismo, la transparencia y la eficiencia de nuestros anfitriones aseguraron desde el primer día que la experiencia sea inolvidable para los atletas, jueces y principalmente el público presente en las gradas.

La competencia Masculina demostró un alto nivel, incluyendo a seis de los diez mejores equipos del mundo, siendo así la segunda competencia más importante del planeta, apenas por detrás del propio Campeonato Mundial.

En la rama Femenina también vivimos un torneo inolvidable. No sólo Canadá destronó a Estados Unidos del primer lugar continental, marcando quizá el inicio de una nueva era en las competencias continentales, sino que además Brasil hizo una aparición explosiva en estos Juegos y se mezcló con las potencias históricas, mostrando un nivel de juego extraordinario, emergente del crecimiento y desarrollo sostenido de nuestro deporte a nivel global.

Por su parte, en los dos Campeonatos Mundiales disputados este año los equipos de las Américas han dominado el diamante. Una muestra más del liderazgo de nuestro continente.

En las siguientes páginas también hablaremos de los Congresos de la División Softbol de la WBSC y la Asamblea de nuestra propia organización, que se llevarán a cabo en Oklahoma City, Estados Unidos, donde no sólo se trabajará intensamente por el bien de nuestro deporte, sino que además se tomarán decisiones importantes a futuro. Siempre es un placer para mí poder reunirme con amigos y colegas de todo el mundo para poder trabajar mancomunadamente por el crecimiento del Softbol.

El equipo de CONPASA ha trabajado mucho para que esta publicación finalmente sea una realidad. Ojalá que la disfruten.

In this issue you will find a brief overview of the history of Softball in relation to the Olympic Games, from the recognition of the ISF by the International Olympic Committee in 1977 to the Agenda 2020, which opened the door of the Olympic Games for Softball again. It’s an article that not only try to inform about the latest developments on this issue, but rather to contextualize the fight sustained for decades by Softball, to be part of the world’s biggest sporting event.

Moreover, in the last three months we have had a great season of international events, with the running of the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games and two World Championships.

Toronto was the home of America’s sport for fourteen days. The hospitality, professionalism, transparency and efficiency of our hosts ensured from day one an unforgettable experience for athletes, officials and especially the fans.

Men’s competition demonstrated a high level, including six of the top ten teams in the world, making it the second most important tournament, just behind the World Campionship itself.

In the Women’s side, we live an unforgettable tournament too. Canada not only dethroned United States from the first place in the Americas, perhaps starting a new era in the continental competitions, but also Brazil made an explosive appearance at these Games and mixed with historic leader countries, showing an extraordinary level of play, proving the worldwide growth and sustained development of our sport.

Meanwhile, in the two world championships held this year, the Americas teams dominated the diamond. Another example of the worldwide leadership of our continent.

In the following pages we also discuss about the WBSC Softball Division Congresses and the Assembly of our organization, both to be held in Oklahoma City, United States. Days of intense work, making important decisions for the good of our sport. For me, it is always a pleasure to meet with friends and colleagues from all over the world to work together for the growth of Softball.

CONPASA team has worked hard to make this publication happen. Hopefully you’ll enjoy it.

La Asamblea General de la Asociación de Confederaciones Deportivas Panamericanas (ACODEPA) se llevó a cabo el día 8 de Julio del

presente en el marco de los XVII Juegos Panamericanos Toronto 2015 en el hotel Westin Harbour Castle en la ciudad de Toronto, Canadá con la presencia de 34 Confederaciones Deportivas Panamericanas.

En la mesa principal estuvieron presentes los miembros del Comité Ejecutivo de ACODEPA así como los invitados Dr. Julio Maglione, Presidente de la ODEPA, Jimena Saldaña, Secretaria General de la ODEPA y Michael Fennell, Presidente de la Comisión Técnica de la ODEPA.

Durante la Asamblea se estableció un dialogo con el Dr. Julio Maglione, así como con Michael Fennell. Se tuvieron también presentaciones por parte del Comité Organizador

The Association of Pan American Sports Confederations (ACODEPA) General Assembly was held on July 8, 2015 as part of

the XVII Pan American Games Toronto 2015 at the Westin Harbour Castle hotel in Toronto, Canada with the presence of 34 Pan American Sports Confederations.

The ACODEPA Executive Board members, as well as guests Dr. Julio Maglione, PASO President, Jimena Saldaña, PASO Secretary General and Michael Fennell, PASO Technical Commission President were present at the head table.

Se aprobaron los cambios propuestos a los estatutos de ACODEPA y se celebraron las elecciones del Comité Ejecutivo de ACODEPA para el periodo 2015-2019. Dicho Comité Ejecutivo quedó integrado de la siguiente manera:

El Comité Organizador de los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio

2020 anunció el 28 de septiembre que Béisbol y Softbol integran la lista de eventos propuestos al Comité Olímpico Internacional para que se incorporen el programa oficial de los Juegos del 2020. En total, se propusieron 18 eventos en cinco deportes: Béisbol / Softbol, Karate, Skateboard, Escalada y Surf.

“Cada una de las ocho federaciones internacionales preseleccionadas demostró sobradamente su potencial para aumentar el valor de los Juegos, y me gustaría aprovechar esta oportunidad para expresar mi más sincero agradecimiento a cada uno de ellos por sus sobresalientes esfuerzos. Creemos firmemente que mediante la conexión con los jóvenes, dándole vida a la Agenda 2020 y la visión de Tokio 2020, nuestra propuesta constituye el mejor paquete posible que agregará más valor a los Juegos”, dijo Fujio Mitarai, Presidente del Panel Programa de Evento adicional .

De este modo los deportes sugeridos continúan en carrera para estar presentes en Tokyo 2020, y la decisión final acerca de qué deporte/s es/son elegidos (o ningún deporte) se tomará el año que viene, en el mes de agosto, durante la Asamblea General del COI que se desarrollará en Río de Janeiro en agosto de 2016.

Softbol olímpicoLa Federación Internacional de Softbol (ISF), actualmente la

División Softbol de la Confederación Mundial de Béisbol y Softbol, fue reconocida por el Comité Olímpico Internacional en la 79ª Sesión del COI, desarrollada en Praga, en el año 1977. De este modo, el Sóftbol hacía su ingreso a la familia olímpica y pasaba a integrar la lista de deportes con posibilidades de ingresar al programa oficial de los Juegos Olímpicos.

El primer paso estaba dado. Sin embargo, pasarían catorce años antes de que se diera el paso más importante.

The Organizing Committee for the 2020

Summer Olympic Games announced on September 28 that Baseball and Softball are on the list of proposed sports to the International Olympic Committee to join the official programme of the Tokyo Games. Eighteen events overall were proposed, in five different sports: Baseball and Softball, Karate, Skateboard, Climbing and Surfing.

“Each of the eight shortlisted international federations amply demonstrated their potential to add to the value of the Games and I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere thanks to each of them for their outstanding efforts. We firmly believe that by connecting with youth, bringing to life Olympic Agenda 2020 and the Tokyo 2020 vision, our proposal constitutes the best possible package that will add the most value to the Games.” said Fujio Mitarai, Chair of the Additional Event Programme Panel.

Thus the suggested sports continue the race to be present in Tokyo 2020, and the final decision about which sport/s is/are elected (if any) will be taken next year, in August, during the IOC General Assembly in Rio de Janeiro.

Olympic SoftballThe International Softball Federation (ISF), currently the World Baseball Softball Confederation Softball Division, was recognized by the International Olympic Committee at the 79th IOC Session held in Prague in 1977 as the global entity governing Softball. Thus, Softball completed the first step by making its entry into the Olympic family and on the list of sports with the potential to become part of the Olympic Games official program.

However, Softball has to wait fourteen years to complete the most important step. After

Tokyo 2020

Luego de varias décadas de trabajo, el 13 de junio de 1991 el Sóftbol recibió la mejor noticia de su historia. El Comité Olímpico Internacional, en su 97ª Sesión realizada en Birmingham, Inglaterra, anunció que el Sóftbol Femenino ingresaba oficialmente al programa de deportes olímpicos, estrenándose en Atlanta 1996.

Todo iba sobre ruedas para el Softbol. Luego de un debut soñado en Atlanta, el éxito registrado en Sydney 2000 y Atenas 2004 habían demostrado que nuestro deoprte pertenece a la familia olímpica.

Sin embargo, once meses después de la final olímpica en Atenas, y luego de tres exitosos Juegos Olímpicos, el Sóftbol recibiría en 2005 la peor noticia de su historia. Luego de los Juegos de Atenas, el Comité Olímpico Internacional decidió rever el programa olímpico luego de cada competencia.

En la 117ª Sesión del COI realizada en Singapur, todos los deportes fueron puestos a consideración de la Asamblea. Para mantenerse en el programa olímpico cada deporte necesitaba obtener la mitad más uno de los votos. Los únicos dos deportes que fallaron en alcanzar este número fueron el Softbol y el Béisbol. De este modo, el 8 de julio de 2005 se determinó la salida de ambos deportes del programa para los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres 2012. Si bien los resultados de las votaciones fueron secretas, a pedido de las Federaciones Internacionales, trascendió tiempo después que el Sóftbol obtuvo 52 votos a favor y 52 votos en contra,

con una abstención. El Sóftbol salió de los Juegos por apenas un voto.

Con esta decisión, el Sóftbol y el Béisbol fueron los primeros deportes eliminados del programa olímpico desde el año 1936, cuando el Water Polo fue quitado de los Juegos.

Así, los Juegos Olímpicos de Beijing 2008 marcarían la despedida del Sóftbol de los Juegos Olímpicos… al menos por el momento. Y el Softbol fue un exito rotundo en China, con estadios totalmente colmados durante toda la competencia.

Back Softball 2016El 27 de junio de 2007, durante la disputa del Campeonato Mundial Femenino Juvenil en Enschede, Holanda, la ISF (actual WBSC-SD) lanzó la campaña Back Softball 2016 con el objetivo de que nuestro deporte vuelva a ser parte de los Juegos Olímpicos 2016, que se disputarán en Río dentro de unos meses.

La campaña se basaba en un plan de acción con diez puntos bien definidos, surgidos a partir de las recomendaciones del movimiento olímpico y diversos líderes de opinión. “La decisión del COI en 2005 de excluir el Sóftbol del Programa para Londres 2012 fue una llamada de atención para nuestro deporte”, dijo el entonces Presidente de la ISF, Don Porter.

Tras dos años de campaña, de la que también participaron el Béisbol, el Rugby, el Golf, el Squash, el Karate y los deportes de Patín, el Sóftbol volvió a

several decades of hard work, on June 13, 1991, Softball received the best news of its history. In the 97th IOC Session held in Birmingham, England, the International Olympic Committee announced that Women’s Softball officially entered to the Olympic sports programme, debuting in Atlanta 1996.

Everything went well for Softball. After a dreamed debut in Atlanta, the success of Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 showed that our sport belongs to the Olympic family.

However, eleven months after the Athens Olympic final, and after three successful Olympic appearances, our sport received the worst news of its history in 2005. After the Athens Games, the International Olympic Committee decided to review the Olympic program after each competition.

At the 117th IOC Session held in Singapore, all sports were put to consideration by the Assembly. To stay on the Olympic programme each sport needed to get 50% plus one votes to stay on the programme. The only two sports that failed to reach this number were Softball and Baseball. Thus, the elimination of both sports on the programme for the 2012 Olympic Games was determined on July 8, 2005. While the International Federations asked to keep secret the results of the voting, it emerged later that Softball received 52 votes in favor and 52

votes against, with one abstention. Softball was out of the Games by just one vote.

With this decision, Softball and Baseball were the first sports eliminated from the Olympic program since 1936, when the Water Polo was removed from the Games.

Thus, the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games marked the farewell of Olympics Softball ... at least for now. And Softball had a huge success in China, with sold out stadiums for every day of competition

Back-Softball 2016On June 27, 2007, during the Junior Women’s World Championship in Enschede, the Netherlands, the ISF (currently WBSC-SD) announced the Back-Softball 2016 campaign with the aim to reinstate our sport in the 2016 Olympic Games, in Rio within a few months.

The campaign was based on a ten points blueprint, arising from the recommendations of the Olympic movement and opinion leaders. “The decision by the IOC in 2005 to exclude Softball from the Programme for London 2012 was a wake-up call for our sport”, said then ISF President Don Porter.

After two years of campaigning, which also included Baseball, Rugby, Golf, Squash, Karate and Roller Sports, Softball was refused by the IOC again as the Executive

recibir la negativa del COI, ya que el Comité Ejecutivo propuso la inclusión del Rugby (en su versión seven) y el Golf, dejando a nuestro deporte sin Juegos Olímpicos por al menos cuatro años más.

WBSCLuego de que el Sóftbol y el Béisbol quedaran fuera del programa olímpico de Londres 2012, la estrategia de ambas disciplinas se modificó, siguiendo los consejos del Comité Olímpico Internacional que indicaba la necesidad de que ambas especialidades se unan en su lucha por regresar a los Juegos Olímpicos 2020.

En octubre de 2012 las Federaciones Internacionales de Béisbol y Sóftbol firmaron un memorándum de entendimiento que sentó las bases para la fusión de ambas organizaciones creando la Confederación Mundial de Béisbol Sóftbol.

A partir de allí, se crearon los estatutos y los delegados de cada disciplina aprobaron la propuesta de unir a ambas federaciones internacionales bajo la WBSC, en sendos congresos. De esta manera, la WBSC quedaba formalmente creada, con Riccardo Fraccari y Porter como Co-Presidentes del organismo.

El 29 de mayo de 2013 el Comité Olímpico anunció que tres deportes integraban la lista corta de deportes que tenían posibilidades de ingresar al programa de 2020 en la Sesión de Buenos Aires. Luego de una extensa evaluación, la Comisión de Programa Olímpico decidió que Squash,

Béisbol – Sóftbol y la Lucha (que había sido bajada de programa en febrero y se le permitió competir en septiembre por ese mismo lugar) participen de la última etapa, que culminaría con la votación en Buenos Aires.

Así, en la 125ª Sesión del COI, la WBSC fue reconocida por el Comité Olímpico como Federación Internacional como la única autoridad competente para regir los destinos del Béisbol y el Softbol, y ambos deportes regresaron al pleno de los miembros COI, que el 8 de septiembre votaron una vez más por el destino olímpico de nuestro deporte. Como era de esperar, la Lucha fue elegida con 49 votos a favor, superando al Béisbol – Softbol (24 votos) y al Squash (22 votos).

Sin embargo, en Buenos Aires también se tomaron dos decisiones que repercutirían en el futuro del Movimiento Olímpico (y quizá también en el futuro del Sóftbol). En primer lugar, se otorgó a Tokio la sede de los Juegos Olímpicos de 2020; y por el otro se eligió Presidente del COI al alemán Thomas Bach, que reemplazó a Jacques Rogge, y llegó con un proyecto de modernizar y revolucionar el futuro del olimpismo: la denominada Agenda 2020.

Agenda 2020La Agenda 2020 es una serie de 40 recomendaciones tendientes a reformar aspectos fundamentales del olimpismo. “Las 40 recomendaciones son como piezas individuales de un rompecabezas, que cuando se ponen juntas nos dan una idea clara de cómo se verá el

WBSCAfter the decision to maintain Softball and Baseball outside of London 2012 Olympic programme, both disciplines changed the strategy following the advice of the International Olympic Committee for both sports to come together in their struggle to return to the 2020 Olympic Games.

In October 2012 the Baseball and Softball International Federations signed a memorandum of understanding that paved the way for the merger of both organizations, to create the World Baseball Softball Confederation.

From there, the statutes were created and the delegates from each discipline approved the proposal to unite the two international federations under the WBSC, in two congresses. Thus, the WBSC was formally

created, with Riccardo Fraccari and Porter as co-Presidents of the body.

On May 29 2013 the IOC announced that three sports were part of the short list with the potential to enter the programme in the 2020 during the session in Buenos Aires. After an extensive evaluation, the Olympic Programme Commission decided that Squash, Baseball-Softball and Wrestling (which had been dropped from the program in February and was allowed to compete in September for that same place) would participate in the final stage, culminating with the vote in Buenos Aires.

La Agenda 2020 fue aprobada por unanimidad en la 127ª Sesión del COI, llevada a cabo en la ciudad de Mónaco, los días 8 y 9 de diciembre de 2014.De especial interés para el Sóftbol es la recomendación N° 10, que hablar de pasar de un programa basado en deportes, a un programa basado en eventos. En detalle, esta recomendación propone lo siguiente:

“1. Revisiones periódicas del programa, que se basará en eventos en lugar de deportes, con la participación de las Federaciones Internacionales, y respetando las siguientes restricciones:

Para los Juegos Olímpicos: aproximadamente 10.500 atletas, 5.000 entrenadores acreditados y personal de apoyo de los atletas, y 310 eventos,

Para los Juegos de Invierno, a unos 2.900 atletas, 2.000 entrenadores acreditados y personal de apoyo de los atletas, y 100 eventos.

2. La Sesión del COI decidirá sobre la inclusión de cualquier deporte en el programa.

3. El COI permitirá que los COJO (Comité Organizador Juegos Olímpicos) presenten una propuesta para la inclusión de uno o más eventos en el programa olímpico para

esa edición de los Juegos Olímpicos”.

De este modo se eliminó el cupo máximo de deportes, que impedía el ingreso de nuevas competencias, y se abrió la posibilidad para que el Comité Organizador de los Juegos proponga una o más disciplinas para ser incorporadas al programa oficial.

Así, con la Agenda 2020 la puerta de los Juegos se abrió nuevamente para el Sóftbol, devolviéndole la esperanza a los deportes de bate y pelota de regresar a la máxima cita del deporte mundial.

With Agenda 2020 the Games door opened again for Softball, restoring hope to the bat-and-ball sports to be back to the biggest sporting event in the world.

Tokyo 2020In the framework of Agenda 2020, the Tokyo Organizing Committee selected 18 events in five sports to propose to the IOC, including Men’s Baseball and Women’s Softball. The proposal included a six-team event for both sports, with 15 players in the Softball event and 24 for Baseball.

“Tokyo 2020’s decision to propose our sport is a ‘home run’ and giant leap forward for baseball and softball,” said WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari. “On behalf of WBSC and our athletes, I would like to thank Tokyo 2020 as well as IOC President Thomas Bach, whose Olympic Agenda 2020 vision has paved the way for this extraordinary opportunity. Tokyo 2020’s proposal for additional events must be reviewed, voted upon and formally approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil next August ahead of the 2016 Games.

Baseball-Softball continues to advance on its way back to the Olympics, but will still be long and winding way. In the coming months the selection process will continue in order to get a definitive place in Tokyo 2020. This will be significant times for our sport with hard work ahead. However, this task will be driven by millions of children and young people around the world, who dreams of representing their country at the Olympic Games with a bat and a glove in their hand.

Todo empezó el 10 de julio. El Rogers Centre cobijó en

sus entrañas una fiesta inolvidable que recibió a los atletas de todo el continente. La Ceremonia Inaugural de los Juegos Panamericanos regaló momentos inolvidables a los atletas y fans que fueron testigos y protagonistas de una noche mágica.

La primera en hacer su aparición en el estadio, también conocido como Skydome (un espectáculo en sí mismo) fue la llama panamericana. Antes de hacer su ingreso, el fuego pasó de Robert Esmie a

Glenroy Gilbert, de éste a Bruny Surin, quien en lo más alto de la CN Tower, ubicada a metros del más icónico estadio de Toronto, le pasó el fuego panamericano a Donovan Bailey, en un cuádruple relevo que evocó y homenajeó la hazaña canadiense en la posta 4 x 100 de los Juegos Olímpicos de Atlanta 1996, donde los cuatro atletas sorprendieron al mundo y se colgaron el oro.

It all began on July 10. The Rogers Centre was the stage for an

unforgettable party that received the athletes from all over the continent. The Opening Ceremony of the Pan American Games gave unforgettable moments for the athletes and fans who were witnesses and protagonists of a magical night.

The first to make its appearance in the stadium, also known as Skydome (a spectacle in itself), was the Pan American flame. Before its entry into the stadium, it went from Robert Esmie to Glenroy Gilbert, to Bruny Surin, who at the top of the CN Tower, located just meters away from the most iconic stadium in Toronto, passed the fire to Donovan Bailey, in a four man relay to honor the Canadian achievement in the 4 x 100 relay of the 1996 Summer Olympics, where the four athletes surprised the world winning the gold medal.

Bailey bailed out with the torch lit from the top of the CN Tower, falling at the ceiling of the legendary Rogers Centre, from where he hung down to the ground in a harness, before the clamor of the 45,000 people who filled the stands. Breaking with the tradition, the Pan Am fire was the first to arrive, being a privileged witness of the whole party.

Then it was the turn of the main stars of the

festival, the athletes, who made their entry into the stadium. The parade was a show of diversity, color, happy faces, and dreams fulfilled. One by one, all the athletes walked around the stadium, waving to the crowd and receiving countless displays of love. The parade was closed by the host team Canada, dying the party in red and white while receiving a high acclaim from the stands.

With all the athletes present, the Cirque du Soleil brought the magic, imagination and artistry to the Opening Ceremony, a show that generated the admiration of the world and condensed the philosophy of these Games:

“Athletes are outstanding human beings. What began as a dream, grew into a deeply held conviction. Through hard work and perseverance, the athletes are on the brink of completing the dream they have strived so long for. Their journey are a metaphor for life”.

After the performance of the most famous Canadian artist group, the ceremony went to its most emotional point, the most awaited moment for the athletes since the Pan American fire died in Guadalajara 2011, four years ago.

Centre, desde donde descendió al terreno colgado de un arnés, para la algarabía de las 45.000 personas que colmaron las gradas. Rompiendo con la costumbre, el fuego panamericano era el primero en llegar y sería testigo privilegiado de toda la fiesta.

Luego fue el turno de los principales protagonistas de la noche, los atletas, que hicieron su entrada en el estadio. El desfile fue una muestra de diversidad, de color, de rostros alegres, de sueños cumplidos. Uno a uno, todos los países caminaron por el estadio, saludando al público que colmó el estadio y recibió a los atletas con innumerables muestras de afecto. El final del desfile estuvo a cargo de Canadá,

USA arrived in Toronto as the favorite to win the title and reached the final unbeaten, confirming all odds. The opponent in the final Softball game of the 2015 Pan American Games was Canada, who had lost their two previous games against

Bye bye, Toronto; hello, Lima

The ball is not flying anymore. The competitions have come to an end. It’s time for celebration and nostalgia for the Games coming to an end, and give way to the illusion that this wonderful experience will repeat in Lima 2019. The Closing Ceremony begins.

Athletes, as always, are the special guests of the night. And they enter again to the Rogers Centre, together, irrespective of countries, races and colors... everyone united. Exactly that was the theme of the ceremony: United through diversity.

Music had a central role in the ceremony. Serena Ryder sang “Together We Are One”, the beautiful official song of the Games, heard over and over throughout the competitions. Pitbull brought the Latin rhythm with an electrifying performance that put to dance the whole Rogers Centre; while the show was closed by hip hop legend Kanye West.

Of course there was time for the protocol speeches and the transfer of the PASO flag to Lima 2019,

Los atletas, como no, son los invitados especiales. E ingresan nuevamente al Rogers Centre, todos juntos, sin distinción de países, razas, colores… Todos unidos. Justamente ese fue el lema de la ceremonia: Unidos en la diversidad.

La música tuvo un lugar preponderante en la ceremonia. Serena Ryder entonó “Together we are one”, la hermosa canción oficial de estos Juegos, que se oyó una y otra vez a lo largo de las competencias. Por supuesto que hubo tiempo para los discursos protocolares y el traspaso de la bandera de la ODEPA a Lima 2019, antes de que se apague el pebetero y el fuego panamericano brille por última vez en el cielo de esta ciudad maravillosa. Toronto 2015 ha llegado a su fin. Atletas de todo el continente vivieron dos semanas inolvidables a orillas de lago Ontario, cumpliendo sueños, batiendo récords y sorprendiendo al mundo con actuaciones formidables.

Sin embargo, con los Juegos del 2015 en el pasado, se renueva la ilusión. Cuatro años nos separan de Lima 2019, donde la fiesta del deporte panamericano volverá a latir. Un nuevo ciclo comienza. La ilusión renace, al mismo tiempo que crecen la melancolía y los recuerdos de Toronto, unos Juegos inolvidables que quedarán grabados por siempre en nuestra memoria.

En el horizonte se asoman los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe de Barranquilla 2018, los Juegos Suramericanos de Cochabamba 2018, los Campeonatos Panamericanos de Softbol, y los Juegos Panamericanos de Lima 2019. Solo queda echarse a andar y disfrutar del camino, con la esperanza de que este hermoso ciclo que comienza tenga una parada más en 2020, con la confirmación de que el Softbol vuelve al programa olímpico en los Juegos de Tokio.

Mientras tanto, simplemente, ¡gracias Toronto!

Athletes from across the continent lived two unforgettable weeks on the edge of Lake Ontario, fulfilling dreams, breaking records and surprising the world with formidable performances.

However, with the 2015 Games in the past, the illusion is renewed. Four years separate us from Lima 2019, where the Pan American sports party will beat again. A new cycle begins. The illusion is reborn, while grow in us the melancholy and the memories of this unforgettable Toronto 2015 Games, that will remain engraved forever in our memory.

On the horizon appear Barranquilla 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games; Cochabamba 2018 South American Games; the Pan American Softball Championships and Lima 2019 Pan American Games. We just need to start walking and enjoy the journey, hoping for one more stop for this beautiful cycle in 2020, with the confirmation that Softball is back to the Olympic Games programme in Tokyo 2020.

Brasil sorprendió al mundo softbolístico accediendo a los playoffs en los Juegos Panamericanos de Toronto, con históricos triunfos ante Cuba y República Dominicana. De este modo, el país más grande de Sudamérica se metió entre las potencias del continente y discutió de igual a igual una posición en el medallero. Por ello, nos contactamos con Jorge Otsuka, Presidente de la Confederación Brasileña de Béisbol y Softbol (CBBS), para que nos cuente acerca de esta fabulosa actuación de Brasil en Toronto

Todo resultado deportivo tiene sus raíces en el pasado. En 2007 Brasil participó de sus primeros Juegos Panamericanos en Río de Janeiro, por ser sede del evento. ¿Fue Río 2007 un punto de inflexión para el Softbol en su país?

Sí, los Juegos de 2007 en Río proporcionaron la oportunidad de jugar en universidades de Estados Unidos y Japón a las jugadoras brasileñas que deseaban desarrollar la técnica del Softbol. Es innegable el progreso que ha tenido Brasil

Panamericanos por primera vez (con el sexto puesto en Puerto Rico 2013) y ahora se metió a los playoffs del Torneo, superando ni más ni menos que a Cuba y a República Dominicana ¿Cuál es el secreto?

El secreto de nuestro progreso ha sido el intenso intercambio de las atletas en universidades de EEUU y Japón, y la participación en torneos y campeonatos internacionales que les dan experiencia y donde pueden aprender nuevas técnicas con los países más tradicionales y desarrollados en el Softbol. Del total de 15 atletas que estuvieron en los Juegos Panamericanos de Toronto, 13 han jugado o todavía están jugando en el extranjero. 5 atletas que participaron en los Juegos Panamericanos de Río en 2007 fueran también a los Juegos de Toronto. Así que fusionamos la experiencia de algunas atletas con la fuerza de las jugadoras mas jóvenes. Brasil es un país futbolero por excelencia; lo mismo puede decirse de Sudamérica. ¿Qué significa para su país y para la región este cuarto puesto en Toronto?

Para nosotros, ser el representante de América del Sur en los Juegos Panamericanos de Toronto fue un gran honor. Y el cuarto puesto nos da la certeza de que estamos en el camino correcto, pero muchas cosas todavía necesitan mejorar. Esperamos que ahora los patrocinadores nos apoyen para que podamos seguir desarrollando cada vez más el Softbol en Brasil Cambiando un poco de tema, no podemos soslayar que en poco menos de un año Río será sede de los Juegos Olímpicos, y el Softbol no estará presente en esta cita. ¿Qué sensaciones le genera esta situación?

Es muy frustrante saber que podríamos estar representando a nuestro país en los Juegos Olímpicos en Brasil. Sin duda hubiera sido una gran oportunidad para poner al Softbol en la lista de deportes practicados por los jóvenes brasileños. Los Juegos Panamericanos también llegarán a Sudamérica, en 2019. Lima será sede de los próximos Juegos y allí sí estará nuestro deporte, lo que marca una posibilidad interesante para que su país confirme lo realizado en Toronto. ¿Qué objetivos se plantea la CBBS de cara a los próximos cuatro años? Deseamos continuar enviando atletas a universidades en el exterior para que puedan ganar experiencia y aprender las nuevas técnicas. Y aumentar nuestra participación en campeonatos internacionales. Además de cuidar de las nuevas generaciones y las nuevas atletas, y traer coaches y atletas con alto nivel técnico para dar clínicas para nuestras jugadoras.

American Games for the first time (with the sixth place in Puerto Rico 2013) and now reached the playoffs in Toronto, beating no less than Cuba and Dominican Republic. What is the secret?

The secret of our progress has been the intense exchange of athletes with Colleges in USA and Japan, and the participation in international tournaments and championships that gave them experience and the opportunity to learn new techniques with more traditional and developed countries in Softball. 13 of 15 athletes who were at the Pan American Games in Toronto have played or are still playing overseas. Five athletes who participated in the Pan American Games in Rio in 2007 were also in Toronto. So we merge some experienced athletes with the strength of the younger players. Brazil is a soccer country par excellence; the same is true to South America. What does this fourth place in Toronto mean for your country and for the region?

For us, being the representative of South America in the Pan American Games in Toronto was a great honor. And the fourth place gives us the certainty that we are on the right way, but many things still need improvement. Now we hope to attract support from sponsors, so we can continue developing Softball in Brazil Changing the subject, we cannot ignore that in less than a year Río de Janeiro will host the Olympics, and Softball will not be present at this meeting. What feelings generates this situation?

It is very frustrating to know that we could be representing our country at the Olympic Games in Brazil. Certainly, it would have been a great opportunity to put Softball on the list of sports to practice for young Brazilians. The Pan American Games will also come to South America in 2019. Lima will host the next Games and there will be our sport, marking an interesting opportunity for Brazil to confirm the job done in Toronto. What objectives arises from the CBBS for the next four years? We want to continue sending athletes to Colleges abroad so they can gain experience and learn new techniques. And increase our participation in international championships. Besides taking care of the new generations and new athletes, and bring high technical level coaches and athletes to give clinics for our players.

El equipo de las estrellas y rayas, que es dirigido por Tairia Flowers, sacó del caminó a Canadá (15-0) y Japón (14-2) para pasar directo a la final donde volvieron a enfrentar a las japonesas dominándolas 8-1.

La ofensiva de EU fue impecable en todo el trayecto del Mundial manteniendo un promedio de bateo colectivo de .425 con 119 carreras anotadas. Dentro de su plantilla se desatacaron DJ Sanders (.583), Sydney Romero (.519) y Alyssa Palomino (.519).

Palomino acaparó todas las miradas con su gran estatura y poder al bate rompiendo el récord de más carreras impulsadas con un total de 27 sobrepasando a la también estadounidense Stacey Nuveman, quien logró 18 RBI en el 1995. Además, empató la marca de 5 cuadrangulares de Nuveman.

Con esta medalla de oro, Estados Unidos se acomoda junto a Japón como los equipos con más preseas doradas, cinco, en esta categoría.

Se disputó en Saskatoon, Canadá, una nueva edición

del Campeonato Mundial Masculino Mayor, con un marcado dominio de los países de las Américas. No sólo Canadá sacó la cara por nuestra región quedándose con el título, sino que además seis de los primeros 10 equipos de la clasificación final pertenecen al continente americano.

Canadá tuvo que esperar más de dos décadas para volver a ser campeón mundial, ya que su último logro ecuménico había sido en Manila, Filipinas, en 1992. En ambas ocasiones, el equipo canadiense tuvo que vencer en la final a Nueva Zelanda, en la que quizá sea la máxima rivalidad del Softbol Masculino a nivel mundial.

En Saskatoon, los Black Sox habían vencido a los locales en la primera semifinal, pero Canadá se mostró despiadado en el día definitivo, anotando 20 carreras en los dos últimos juegos del torneo para alzarse con el título. Steve Mullaley fue la gran figura del partido decisivo, con tres jonrones en cuatro turnos, y 7 carreras impulsadas.El podio lo completó Venezuela, que si bien no pudo repetir la final que jugó en el Mundial 2013, se mantuvo en el podio mundialista y se consolida como una de las potencias de la categoría. De la mano de Ramon Jones, y con un equipo contundente en ofensiva, la Vinotinto venció en el playoff a la Australia de Adam Folkard por 4-0 para llegar con vida al último día de acciones, donde no pudieron con Canadá y se quedaron al borde de otra final.

En quinto lugar terminó una sorprendente República Dominicana, que fue la sorpresa del torneo. El equipo del Caribe se quedó con el Grupo B con seis triunfos y solo una derrota, por delante de potencias como Australia, Venezuela, Japón y Estados Unidos. Lamentablemente, el equipo dominicano no pudo mantener el ritmo en la fase de playoffs, cayendo con Nueva Zelanda por 8-0 y con Venezuela por 3-0, finalizando con un muy meritorio quinto puesto.

El otro país americano que clasificó a los playoffs fue Argentina, que terminó en el octavo puesto de la competencia. A pesar de haberle ganado a Nueva Zelanda en el debut mundialista, el equipo sudamericano clasificó cuarto en su grupo, y perdió en el primer cruce de playoff con Venezuela por 5-1, terminando lejos de los primeros puestos del Mundial.

Senior Men’s World Championship, with a strong performance of the countries of the Americas. Not only Canada made a big splash for our region with their title, but also six of the top 10 teams in the final standings came from the American continent.

Canada had to wait more than two decades in order to become world champion again, since their last ecumenical achievement had been in Manila, Philippines, in 1992. On both occasions, the Canadian team won the final against New Zealand, probably the maximum rivalry in Men’s Softball worldwide.

In Saskatoon, the Black Sox had beaten the host team in the first semifinal, but Canada was ruthless on the last day of play, scoring 20 runs in the final two games of the tournament to win the

title. Steve Mullaley was the man of the match of the decisive game with three homers in four at bats, and 7 RBIs.

In spite of not been able to repeat the final played in the 2013 Worlds, Venezuela made the podium, remained on the top three teams in the world, becoming one of the main powers of the category. With Ramon Jones right arm, and with a strong offensive team, the “Vinotinto” team beat Australia and Adam Folkard by 4-0 in the playoffs, to reach the last day of play, where they were unable to beat Canada, getting just short of another final.

In fifth place finished an astonishing Dominican Republic team, which was the surprise of the tournament. The Caribbean team took the first place of the Group B with six wins and only one loss, ahead of powerhouses like Australia, Venezuela, Japan and the United States. Unfortunately, the Dominican team could not keep pace at the playoffs, falling with New Zealand by 8-0 and Venezuela by 3-0, finishing with a very creditable fifth place in the world.

Argentina was the other American country that qualified for the playoffs, finishing eighth in the competition. After beat New Zealand in the World Cup debut, the South American team ranked fourth in its group and lost in the first playoff game against Venezuela by 5-1, finishing far from the top of the World.

Los dos vecinos no pudieron ingresar a los playoffs del torneo (terminaron quinto y sexto respectivamente en el Grupo B), aunque dominaron la ronda de reclasificación, con el equipo estadounidense superando a los aztecas por 4-3 en el partido por el noveno lugar.

Finalmente, el otro equipo americano que participó del Mundial fue Guatemala, que debutó en un torneo ecuménico y finalizó en la decimosegunda posición. Cabe destacar que el equipo guatemalteco consiguió su primer triunfo en la historia del certamen, superando a Dinamarca

por 3-1 en la fase de grupos.

Un nuevo Mundial está en los anales de la historia, con la confirmación del protagonismo de los equipos americanos y con un gran suceso en las taquillas, registrando casi 54.000 espectadores a lo largo del torneo, que vieron como el equipo local marchaba rumbo al título, recuperando el primer lugar del ranking mundial luego de 23 años. El próximo Campeonato Mundial Masculino Mayor WBSC será en julio de 2017, nuevamente en Canadá, aunque en esa oportunidad la ciudad anfitriona será Whitehorse.

For its part, USA and Mexico finished in the ninth and tenth place respectively, completing the six American countries in the top 10 teams in the world. The two neighbors could not enter to the playoffs (they finished fifth and sixth respectively in Group B), but dominated the round of reclassification, with the US team beating the Aztecs by 4-3 in the match for the ninth place.

Finally, the last American team that participated in the World Cup was Guatemala, making its debut at an ecumenical tournament and finishing in twelfth position.

The Guatemalan team got its first win in the tournament’s history, beating Denmark by 3-1 in the group stage.

A new World Championship is in the annals of history, with the confirmation of the leading role of American teams and a huge success at the ticket office, registering almost 54,000 spectators throughout the tournament, which saw the home team marched toward the title, regaining the top spot in the world ranking after 23 years. The next WBSC Senior Men’s World Championship will be in July 2017, in Whitehorse, Canada.

Congreso y Asamblea

Luego de ser sede de un impecable Campeonato Mundial Femenino Juvenil en agosto de este año, la ciudad de Oklahoma City se prepara una vez más para recibir un

evento mundial de nuestro deporte. En esta ocasión, se trata del Congreso de la División Softbol de la WBSC (WBSC-SD) y la XVI Asamblea Ordinaria de la Confederación Panamericana de Softbol (CONPASA), que tendrán lugar en la capital mundial del Softbol en el mes de octubre. Ambos congresos tendrán lugar en el Renaissance Hotel ubicado en el centro de Oklahoma City.

Entre las principales decisiones que se tomarán en el Congreso de la División Softbol de la WBSC, están la revisión y aprobación del plan estratégico de la entidad madre del Softbol mundial, la designación de las sedes para los campeonatos mundiales de 2018 y 2019, la elección del Segundo Vicepresidente, así como también las modificaciones a la constitución de la entidad.

After the organization of an impeccable Junior Women’s World Championship in August, Oklahoma City is preparing once again for a

global event. We’re talking about the WBSC Softball Division (WBSC-SD) Congress and the XVI Ordinary Assembly of the Pan American Softball Confederation (CONPASA), taking place in the world capital of Softball in October. Both events will take place at the Renaissance Hotel located in downtown Oklahoma City.

Among the major decisions to be taken in the WBSC-SD Congress are the review and approval of the Long Range Strategic Plan of the organization, the election of future world championships hosts in 2018 and 2019, the election of the Second Vice-President of the institution, as well as the amendments to the constitution of the organization.

The Long Range Strategic Plan will be presented on October 14. After several months of work together with LBB Strategies consulting, which began with the meeting of various committees in San Francisco in February, the process will result in a document that will guide the actions of the WBSC-SD for the coming years.

Regarded to the World Championships, Prince Albert (Canada) is bidding for the 2018 WBSC Junior Men’s World Championship; while Japan (city to be designed) has presented as candidate to host the Women’s World Championship in that same year. For 2019, the city of Irvine (USA) presents his credentials to receive the Junior Women’s World Championship, while there will be two proposals competing for the Senior Men’s World Championship: Prague (Czech Republic) and Oklahoma City (United States) itself. Finally, the city of Gaborone (Botswana) is bidding to host the next General Congress in 2017.

Congress and Assemblycon la consultora LBB Strategies, que comenzaron con la reunión de diversas comisiones en la ciudad de San Francisco en febrero de este año, que darán como resultado un documento que guiará las acciones de la División Softbol de la WBSC por los próximos años.

En relación a los Campeonatos Mundiales, Prince Albert (Canadá) se ha postulado para obtener la sede del Campeonato Mundial Masculino Juvenil 2018; mientras que Japón (con ciudad a designar) se presenta como posible anfitrión para el Mundial Femenino Mayor de ese mismo año. Para el año 2019, la ciudad de Irvine (Estados Unidos) presenta sus credenciales para recibir el Campeonato Mundial Femenino Juvenil, mientras que habrá dos propuestas en pugna por el Campeonato Mundial Masculino Mayor: Praga (República Checa) y la misma Oklahoma City (Estados Unidos). Finalmente, la ciudad de Gaborone (Botswana) se presenta como alternativa para albergar el próximo Congreso General, en el año 2017.

Por su parte, seis son los postulantes que aspiran a ocupar la posición de Segundo Vicepresidente de la División Softbol de la WBSC, que quedara vacante luego del lamentable deceso del recordado Jesús Suniaga. Ellos son Ami Baran (Israel), Endy Croes (Aruba), Warren Jones (Estados Unidos), Totoni Sanna (Italia), Tommy Velázquez (Puerto Rico) y Gabriel Waage (República Checa) –en orden alfabético-.

The delegates will arrive to Oklahoma City on October 13, with a meeting of the Board of the WBSC-SD being held during that same day.

The next day there will be a lot of activity once again, with the aforementioned submission and review of the Long Range Strategic Plan in the morning, and the start of the Commission Meetings in the afternoon. This day will meet the Men’s Softball Commission, the Competitions Commission (Contracts Review Commission and World Championships Protocol), and the Commission of the Hall of Fame.

These meetings will continue the next day. In the morning will session the Commissions of Development, Referees and Athletes / Women and Sport; while after the lunch will meet the Playing Rules & Equipment Standards Commission, and the Legislative Commission. That same day, at 18:30, will be the Congress Reception.

Finally, on October 16 will take place the General Session of the Congress of the WBSC Softball Division, where all decisions are taken.

Al día siguiente habrá una intensa actividad, con la mencionada presentación y revisión del Plan Estratégico de Largo Alcance en horas de la mañana, y con el comienzo de las reuniones de comisión en horas de la tarde. Este día se reunirán la Comisión de Softbol Masculino, la Comisión de Competiciones (Comisión de Revisión de Licitaciones y Protocolo de Campeonatos Mundiales), y la Comisión del Salón de la Fama.

Estas reuniones continuarán al día siguiente, ya que antes del mediodía sesionarán las comisiones de Desarrollo, Árbitros, y Atletas/Mujer y Deporte; mientras que luego de la comida se reunirán las comisiones de Reglas de Juego y Estándares de Equipo, y la Comisión Legislativa. Este mismo día, a las 18:30 horas, tendrá lugar la recepción para el Congreso.

Finalmente, el 16 de octubre se reunirá el pleno de la Asamblea para llevar a cabo la Sesión General del Congreso de la División Softbol de la WBSC, donde se tomarán todas las decisiones.

Luego de que se desarrolle la Sesión General, el día 17 de octubre se volverá a reunir la Junta Directiva de la División Softbol de la WBSC, al mismo tiempo que los delegados de los diferentes países regresan a sus hogares.

CONPASAAprovechando la presencia de la mayoría de los delegados de los países del continente americano en Oklahoma City, la Confederación Panamericana de Softbol también mantendrá en Oklahoma City su Asamblea Ordinaria, que en este caso se llevará a cabo el 12 de octubre.

Luego del mensaje de bienvenida del Presidente de CONPASA, el puertorriqueño Tommy Velázquez, se pasará lista de los delegados presentes para establecer el quórum de la Asamblea.

La primera actividad será la revisión y aprobación de la minuta correspondiente a la XV Asamblea Ordinaria, que se llevó a cabo el 29 de marzo de 2012 en la ciudad de Valencia, Venezuela. A continuación, el Presidente presentará su informe de gestión, junto con los reportes financieros correspondientes a 2012, 2013 y 2014, para su aprobación.

Ya en horas de la tarde se nombrarán las Comisiones de trabajo de la Asamblea, y se presentarán las candidaturas para ser sede de los próximos Campeonatos Panamericanos de Softbol. Finalmente, se tratarán puntos varios de la agenda, antes de que se dé por concluida la Asamblea.

Esta será la XVI Asamblea Ordinaria de la organización.

CONPASATaking advantage of the presence of a majority of the delegates of the America’s countries in Oklahoma City, the Pan American Softball Confederation will also maintain its Ordinary Assembly in Oklahoma City, to be held on October 12.

This day, after the welcome message from CONPASA President, Puerto Rican Tommy Velazquez, Secretary General will call the roll to establish the quorum of the Assembly.

The first activity will be the review and approval of the XV Ordinary Assembly minute, held on March 29, 2012 in the city of Valencia, Venezuela. Then the President will present for approval the management and financial reports for 2012, 2013 and 2014.

In the afternoon will be the appointment of the Commissions of the Assembly, and will take place the presentation of hosting cities for the next Pan American Softball Championships. Finally, various agenda items will be discussed, before the end of the Assembly.

This will be the XVI Ordinary Assembly of the organization.

Softbol Canadá festejó su 50° aniversario de la mejor manera:

con el mejor verano de su historia. El país de la hoja de maple consiguió las dos medallas de oro (Femenino y Masculino) en los Juegos Panamericanos de Toronto, luego de consagrarse en el Campeonato Mundial Masculino Mayor en Saskatoon, quedándose así con tres de las cuatro competencias más importantes del mundo para los países americanos, en menos de dos meses.

Canadá no solo se quedó con los títulos en las tres competencias disputadas, sino que además lo hizo como local, frente a su público, siendo nuevamente sede de las más importantes citas de nuestro deporte. Y como ya nos tiene acostumbrados, el país del norte recibió al mundo del Softbol con los brazos abiertos.

Ante este desafío deportivo y organizacional, el

Presidente de Softbol Canadá, Kevin Quinn, mencionó: “Ha sido muy emocionante y desafiante al mismo tiempo. Ganar las tres medallas de oro fue muy gratificante, pero se necesitó mucho trabajo duro, de un montón de gente, para que esto suceda”.

Canadá ha organizado el Campeonato Mundial Masculino Mayor en tres ocasiones, siendo siempre Saskatoon el lugar elegido. El certamen más importante de la rama Masculina a nivel mundial regresó a esta ciudad en 2015, luego de que fuera sede en 1988 y 2009.

Esta también fue la tercera ocasión que Canadá albergó los Juegos Panamericanos, la justa deportiva más importante de nuestro continente y el segundo evento multideportivo más importante del mundo, solo detrás de los propios Juegos Olímpicos. La hospitalidad canadiense ya se había hecho sentir en Winnipeg, en 1967 y 1999, antes de que Toronto, su ciudad más grande e importante, organizara

The land of the maple leaf won two gold medals (Female and Male) in the Pan American Games in Toronto, after being crowned Champions in the Senior Men’s World Championship in Saskatoon, taking three of the four major tournaments in the world for American countries, in less than two months.

Our home and native land!Canada not only got the title in the three tournaments played, but did so at home, in front of their fans, hosting again the most important events of our sport. And as usual does, the northernmost country in our continent welcomed the Softball world with open arms.

Facing this sporting and organizational challenge,

Kevin Quinn, Softball Canada President, said: “It has been tremendously exciting and challenging as well. Winning the three gold medals was very rewarding but it took a lot of hard work by a lot of people to make this happen”.

Canada has hosted the Senior Men’s World Championship three times, always in Saskatoon. The most important Men’s event came back to this city in 2015, after hosting the 1988 and 2009 tournaments.

This was also the third time that Canada hosted the Pan American Games, the largest sporting event of our continent and the second largest multi-sport event in the world, only behind the Olympic Games. The Canadian hospitality was felt in Winnipeg in 1967 and 1999, before Toronto -the largest and most important city in the country- hosted this year’s unforgettable

Saskatoon ha acogido numerosos campeonatos mundiales en los últimos años por lo que se esperaba que repitieran con otro evento de clase mundial”, reconoció el máximo responsable de Softbol Canada. “Toronto es muy nuevo en la organización de eventos internacionales de Softbol, por lo que eran una entidad desconocida. Al final llegaron a la meta con gran éxito. Nos tomó tres años de preparación para llegar allí, pero valió la pena con un gran evento”.

Muchos años pasaron antes de que Canadá volviera a conseguir tan importantes logros como este año. Sin dudas, el multitudinario apoyo de su gente en Saskatoon y en Toronto ayudó para que Canadá pueda subirse a lo más alto del podio en las tres competencias.

Hacía 23 años, y cinco campeonatos mundiales, que Canadá no se consagraba en el torneo ecuménico Masculino Mayor. La última vez había sido en Manila, Filipinas, en 1992, cuando superó en la final del torneo a Nueva Zelanda por 5-3. Además, esta fue la primera vez que el equipo rojiblanco pudo consagrarse enfrente de su público, ya que en sus dos anteriores presentaciones había terminado en el tercer sitio.

“Luego del sexto puesto en el Mundial 2013,

hicimos un cambio de enfoque, tanto mental como físico. Incorporamos nuevos miembros en nuestro cuerpo técnico y pusieron en marcha un sólido plan, y pidieron que nuestros atletas lo compren. Y los atletas lo hicieron” reflexionó Quinn. “Actualmente estamos trabajando duro para rejuvenecer el Softbol Masculino en nuestro país. Este es un gran impulso para alentar a los jóvenes a acercarse a nuestro deporte”.

Más tiempo transcurrió desde que Canadá pudiera festejar por partida doble en los Juegos Panamericanos, consiguiendo las dos medallas de oro. El único antecedente eran los Juegos de Caracas, en 1983, donde el equipo rojo había vencido en las dos finales (Masculina y Femenina) a Estados Unidos. En Toronto, 32 años más tarde, la historia se repitió, cortando la racha de siete oros consecutivos de Estados Unidos en la rama Femenina.

Consultado sobre la Victoria sobre Estados Unidos, que le dio la medalla de oro a Canadá en el Softbol Femenino, Quinn dijo que “fue una sensación indescriptible. The USA is a very strong opponent on any given day and to be able to match them when the gold medal was on the line was a feeling of tremendous accomplishment and satisfaction for the hundreds of hours of preparation put into this

team”.

“All three wins were equally rewarding. Because the Women’s Pan Ams was the culmination of 3 years work to prepare for the Pan Am games, it was particularly rewarding”, said the President of Softball Canada.

The True North strong and freeIn the three tournaments, Canada proved to be a strong, formidable and powerful team at key moments, which allowed them to enjoy a dreamed summer. Adding the Men’s World Championship and the Pan American Games in both categories, Canada had 23 wins with only 3 losses -numbers that show the strength of the farthest north country of the continent.

In Saskatoon, the Canadian team went undefeated before losing in the first semi-final against New Zealand by 9-5. However, the last day of actions would be glorious for the local team, which scored 20 runs in two games to beat Venezuela by 10-0, and New Zealand by 10-5, winning the world championship.

Their overwhelming victorious path continued in Toronto, a few days later, taking the gold without losing a single match and remain as the only country to win every the Pan American Games in the Men’s competition (eight tournaments played). La Federación Deportiva Peruana de Softbol organiza entre el 6 y el 11 de octubre el Primer Campeonato Sudamericano Sub15. El torneo se disputará en Pueblo

Nuevo, Chincha, donde se han construido dos nuevos diamantes para esta competencia.

El torneo contará con la participación de Aruba, Bolivia, Brasil, Ecuador, y Perú, y está destinado a jugadoras nacidas en los años 2000, 2001 y 2002.

El torneo se disputará en homenaje al Sr. Jesús Suniaga Figuera, miembro del Salón de la Fama de la Federación Internacional de Softbol e importante directivo del deporte en Venezuela y el mundo.

Chincha es una pintoresca localidad perteneciente a la Región Ica, ubicada a 202 km de Lima; es una ciudad con grandes atractivos turísticos, por la conservación de la cultura afroperuana, cálido clima y gente excepcional.

El Comité Organizador informó que además de la competencia deportiva, se desarrollará una actividad cultural donde cada Selección Nacional deberá presentar un número artístico (canto o baile).

The Peruvian Softball Sports Federation organizes between October 6 and 11, the first U15 South American Championship. The tournament will

be played in Pueblo Nuevo, Chincha, where they have built two new diamonds for this competition.
