• X (published in 2002) is the title of the autobiography of Khushwant Singh, a

famous Indian writer, journalist and columnist. Apart from tracing his story and

immediate family history, it deals in depth with his relations with political

dignitaries. The name of the book itself was derived from a famous column that

he wrote for the newspaper Hindustan Times.

• Some exclusive excerpts of the book detailing the relationship between the ex-

Prime minister Indira Gandhi and her daughter-in-law Maneka Gandhi were

published in India Today to generate publicity before publication of the book.

The publication of the book was held up for more than five years after Maneka

Gandhi filed a case against the release of the book.

Valmiki Ramayan does not mention Ram’s sister, however, in the Mahabharata

we learn of King Lompada who adopts the daughter of Dashratha. In later

literature, this daughter of Dashratha becomes Ram’s elder sister. According to

the Oriya Ramayana or the Dandi Ramayana she was adopted by the King

Lomapada and later given in marriage to Rishyashringa, a sage whose celibacy

causes drought in Lompada’s kingdom. Following the marriage, the rains come

• When India became independent in 1947, ICC invoked a certain Rule 5 and

India's membership was reduced to a provisional status. It was likely that

India would have lost the Test status but for a decision by the Indian

government a few years later. The same Rule 5 came up for discussion

regarding another country after a few years. It was decided the Test matches

to be played by that team later that year would be treated as unofficial. But

somebody conveniently forgot to mark them as such, and the team

• X was an Indian attendant of Queen Victoria. He served her during the final fifteen years of her reign, gaining her maternal affection over that time. In 1887, Victoria's Golden Jubilee year, he was one of two Indians selected to become servants to the Queen. Victoria came to like him a great deal and gave him the title of “Munshi”. Victoria appointed him her Indian Secretary, showered him with honours, and obtained a land grant for him in India. The close platonic relationship between him and the Queen led to friction within the Royal Household, the other members of which felt themselves to be superior to him. Following Victoria's death in 1901, her successor, Edward VII, returned him to India and ordered the confiscation and destruction of the Munshi's correspondence with Victoria.
