Volunteer
Generosity John Kane was a student voluntee r for the intergenerational
art program, Opening Minds through Art (OMA). Each week for
8 weeks, he would come to Kavod to do art with his beloved
new art partner, E.L.. Between swapping stories about their
lives and families, E. would tell John about the other activities
she was involved with at Kavod. She even invited him to come
watch her sing in the annual talent show. He was thrilled with
the invite, and made special effort to attend the show. Though
he was blown away by the talent of E. and her peers, John
noticed the sound system they were using was outdated. It
became his mission to solve this problem.
For funding, John first turned to his university who had offered
to support students who wished to make a larger impact
where they were volunteering. Unfortunately, the cost was too
high and his proposal was rejected. John persisted. He called
upon friends and family, selling them with his enthusiasm
about Kavod, the residents, and his experience as a volunteer.
With the help of his generous community, John donated a
state-of-the-art Karaoke machine, a hand truck for moving it
around, a large collection of karaoke music, and a gift card to
buy specific songs as they are requested.
This donation will bring so much joy to Kavod. It will be used
for the talent show, singing club, Music and Memory program,
and hopefully many more activities. We are in awe of the
generosity of this OMA volunteer and his community.

Kavod Shul
Days of Turning: The High Holy Days
and Festival of Sukkot
As you receive this newsletter we will
have just celebrated Rosh Hashanah/The
New Year (5780) and entered the “Ten
Days of Awe” between Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur. This is a very special
time of “Teshuvah,” of “turning towards
the good” before the final prayers of Yom
Kippur, the Day of Atonement, or “At-
One-ment.” It is a good time to make
amends and to reconnect with our higher
goals and purposes in life.
That is followed four days later by the
major fall pilgrimage festival of “Sukkot,”
when our Jewish ancestors would come
to Jerusalem for a week of celebrating the
harvest and “The Season of our Joy,” and
Jews everywhere would dwell in “Sukkot”
or temporary harvest booths as
commanded by the Torah.
Feel free to join us for these and other
celebrations and programs.

Fire Alarm Procedure Reminder
As a reminder, according to Kavod’s
House Rules, be sure to follow the
procedures below for fire alarms/fires.
If a Tenant hears a building fire alarm go
off, they should STAY IN THEIR
APARTMENT.
If there is a fire in your building:
Keep your apartment entry door
closed.
3
If entry door feels hot, put a wet towel
along the floor of the bottom of the
door.
Stay in the apartment until the fire
department comes or alarm stops.
If you must move through a smoke-
filled area, crawl on the floor to the
nearest exit.
If you must leave the area you are in,
USE THE STAIRS. DO NOT USE THE
ELEVATORS.
Each apartment has a smoke detector in
it. If a smoke detector goes off, a Tenant
should pull their emergency cord
immediately. If the smoke detector goes
off in the Tenant's apartment due to
burnt food or some other matter, Tenant
should try to stop the source of the
smoke and open the window, and the
smoke detector should stop going off. If
there is a fire in the Tenant's apartment,
Tenant should leave the apartment, shut
but not lock the door, go into the hall and
ring the fire alarm.
Under no circumstances may a
fire/smoke detector be covered. Such
action constitutes a lease violation.
PLEASE do not leave your apartment to
investigate what is going on. We need to
be sure rules are followed, and that the
fire department is able to do their work
unobstructed.

Rebecca’s Volunteer Corner Hello Everyone!
Fall is upon us, there is a chill in the air
and our vegetable and flower beds are
resting until Spring. A big thank you to all
our Garden Club volunteers who spent
countless hours tending their beds and
beautifying our grounds. What a
difference your passion makes in
our attitude, our senses and overall well-
being.
Now that the weather is changing,

From the Pet Club Pet of the Month – Sophia By CJS
"No, I cannot come now. I ordered
dinner." "You have to come now!" Such
was the scene last March in Kavod's
dining room. I.C. obeyed her
granddaughter L. and left her table.
Destination was Denver Dumb Friends
where L. had temporarily held a dog for I. to see. Having lost her beloved poodle,
Shayna, only last month, I.'s firm pledge
was "never another dog." This wasn't
going to be easy. L. placed the
chihuahua, our pet of the month, into I.s
lap. She looked into I.'s agitated face with
pleading eyes. A few loving kisses, a little
time, and I.'s agitation was gone.
Named Sophie, until a neighbor of I.'s
said, "Oh no, she's royalty. She's a
Sophia!" When I met Sophia, I was
stunned. She looked like a very, very tiny
deer, deer eyes, ears, legs, so gorgeous,
so different. She is known as a deer-
faced and deer long-legged chihuahua.
She is amazingly soft, perceptive,
intelligent
(I. has to spell O-U-T), is puppy pad
trained, loves walks, plays ball and stays
gorgeous with a monthly bath and
grooming. She loves Inez's son because
he plays Frisbee and her kind of play.
Sophia's TV choices are Wheel of Fortune,
Family Feud, and America's Funniest
Videos.
When I held Sophia, it was like holding a
moment of peace. I.'s veterinarian told
her, "You are her hero. You love her and
care for her." A story of love, meant to
be. Thanks to L., who helped Sophia find
her hero Inez and maybe her
grandmother found her hero too.
SRC (Senior Resource Center)
Transportation Call Center Phone: 303-235-6972
Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4 pm
Rides can be requested for any purpose,
allowing riders to travel independently to
medical/dental appointments, grocery
shopping, congregate noon meals, or
community based care programs. You
can also take personal trips such as to the
beauty shop, bank, visiting a friend, etc.,
(within 10 miles of the resident address).
A rider can take three round trips per
week with exceptions made for medical
reasons. Donations are accepted for this
service. A resident must be over the age
of 60. Persons under 60 who have a
mobility impairment can also request
service. Please make ride requests 3 - 7
business days in advance whenever
possible. Shorter notice requests can be
made including the day of the request
(such as a medical follow-up) but it is a
first call/first serve situation. Some trips
that occur regularly (i.e. shopping, going
7
to dialysis) can be placed into a
subscription service so you don't need to
call each week. Advance notice helps
build efficient routing since this is a
shared ride system. Always remember to
call SRC Transportation if you need to
cancel your ride; this opens room for
another rider.
Please have the following information
ready when you make your call:
Your name
Pick-up address
Drop off address
Time of the appointment
How long appointment will last
An emergency contact’s phone
number
New riders will receive a "new rider
packet," usually within two weeks of a
call. This packet includes important
information, phone numbers, the latest
rider Newsletter titled "Going Your Way"
and donation envelopes to get you
started with using this wonderful service.
