This means that in Zimbabwe there is astaggering figure of about 7,000,000people who do not have internet access!

Why do they need the INTERNET

anyway?• Economic growth: Increasing broadband penetration boosts economic growth by

1,3% or more.

• Employment Creation: Broadband can facilitate and create jobs in Zimbabwe

directly and indirectly.

• Health care: E-medicine provides better access to care, reduces travel, and

facilitates rapid diagnosis and treatment.

• SME’s: Studies show that Broadband is essential to the success of small and

medium enterprises.

• Education: Internet access is associated with better educational performance.

Problems with CONNECTIVITY in remote areas

• Non- Availability of Electricity.

• Expensive in terms of cable and fibre installations.

• Geographical challenges with cable installations.

• Expensive in terms of equipment used.

• Zimbabwe does not have a geo-stationery satellite orbiting the earth

which means Internet Service Operators have to buy from other

global carriers making it expensive for the rural outfit.

Solution for CONNECTIVITY in remote areas

Fortunately, Tel•One has already invested in a wireless solution that can

span across the entire country without deployment of intermediary

infrastructure.

VSAT Ka band• The Ka band is part of the K band of the microwave band of the

electromagnetic spectrum.

• This symbol refers to "K-above" — in other words, the band directly above

the K-band

• “Ku” stands for “Kurz unten” - German for the band just underneath the

“short” or K-band. Not surprisingly “Ka” stands for “Kurz above”.

• Provides high power and higher throughput –

Spot Beams.

• Gives more digital bandwidth than Ku.

• Allows higher bandwidth communication.

• Enables the satellite operators to transmit

around ten times as much data over the same

satellite capacity as Ku band.

• Equipment used is much smaller, affordable and

much easier to set up than C Band.

• Our economic blueprint ZIMASSET, identifies an infrastructure and utilities cluster

as one of the pillars of sustainable socio-economic development.

• The provision of rural connectivity will enable the achievement of the following key

result areas under ZIMASSET;

• e-learning,

• e-government,

• ICT backbone and infrastructure,

• ICT research and development.

CONNECTIVITY for all in ZIMBABWE

• One of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) is to raise the levels of

broadband access by 2015, with specific focus on rural connectivity.

• Deployment of rural broadband will result in the realisation of key ICT goals as

provided by ZIMASSET as well the MDG on rural connectivity.
