St. Nicholas School: The Beginning

(continued on page 18)

By the 1950’s, Chattanooga stretched from the foot of Lookout Mountain to Missionary Ridge. On the east side of the Ridge stood Grace Episcopal Church. Chattanooga was growing, but the city had no public

kindergartens.

The young parents of Grace Church called for a meeting with then rector Leon Crawford Balch. These parents sought the finest academic preparation for their children. They believed an education could reach beyond textbooks to strengthen char-acter and spirituality. Mr. Balch agreed, and together, they decided to start a school.

In the fall of 1958, the first kindergar-ten class of St. Nicholas School met in the garage of Grace Episcopal Church. Atop a lush hill at the end of a tree-lined Belvoir Avenue, St. Nicholas students shared classroom space with the Grace Bookstore and Stilwell Electri-cal Company. Two years later, the school re-organized under Director Dot Easley, and the St. Nicholas program grew into a more structured mission of Grace Episcopal Church. for the hard work and dedication of the many volun-teers who made the event such a success. We also could not have done it without the generosity of our

many sponsors. The party began with a Silent and Live Auction and culminated with a wonderful toast to the school by Janice Robbins. Proceeds from the event are dedicated to the development of a Chapel/Fine Arts building.

At the Gala, volunteers pulled around a “Garden Cart” and accepted do-nations – seed money, if you will. If you were unable to attend, but

would like to contribute “seed money” to help

make this dream a reality, please contact Dexter Cantelou at [email protected]

Choosing St. Nicholas for Gracie

. . . from a Parent’s Perspect ive

I knew St. Nicholas was different. A brief tour on campus one winter day confirmed that. Gracie was nearly five and Gil and I were getting our first chance to see the campus. We quietly peeked in on a Level 5 science class

and watched the teacher set up a demonstration about evapo-ration. The children were interacting and Gracie spoke up and asked a question. Gil and I quickly tried to shush her, but the teacher and Barbara Dawkins immediately welcomed the question. As we were leaving we were assured the teachers at St. Nicholas love the curiosity of their students.

We were hooked. We knew we’d found the place that would foster our child’s curiosity. At the same time we were meeting older students and alums of St Nicholas and discover-ing self-assured young people who could communicate with adults as well as their peers.

The ELC teachers use real life experiences to teach them. Halloween candy was used to teach the scientific method. Christmas tree lights were used to show parallel and series lighting! Gracie had us take lights out of the tree to

demonstrate!

The book Green Eggs and Ham was used to teach science and art when the teachers added yellow and blue food coloring to make green eggs. We had to make green eggs at home for a couple of months after that!

The opportunity to volunteer in the class-room helped me witness

the magic of St. Nicholas. The classrooms are full of activ-ity. You won’t find rows of desks lined up neatly. You’ll see a small group of children sitting at counters doing fun proj-ects related to their lessons, others are sitting at round tables quietly working on assignments in their books and others are working with the teacher.

Parents are looking for the best opportunities for their children to learn. They want their little ones ready for the next step filled with math and reading skills and the knowledge to help them glide into sixth grade. Those are the requisites. St. Nich-olas adds what I call gifts to these children. The gifts of the

heart our daughter has received from St. Nicholas include compassion, friendship and responsibility. And skills that are gifts include the ability to study, speak in front of a group and think independently.

Teachers everywhere are a special bunch of people. St. Nicholas attracts the best. They enjoy letting the creativ-

ity flow and teaching life lessons along with poetry and painting.

The school is a haven. Gracie

was allowed to be a child, but she’ll also be ready for the real world. Her friends are from varied races and religions and she has learned to embrace their differences.

This is the year Gracie will say goodbye to St. Nicho-las. But it will always be close to our hearts. It’s so much more than a school. I’ve seen how St. Nicholas alums still have a special bond no matter where they go afterwards. Having witnessed Gracie and her classmates progress from the Early Learning Center to Level 7, I’ve seen them gain confidence and maturity and am so grateful for every single teacher, parent and staff member who helped bring them along.

Quotes from Gracie as she reflects on her experiences at St. Nicholas:

“I’ve learned that no matter what, you always have good friends to support you.”“Chapel has brought me closer to God in a way that I understand.”

On an early fall morning in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, Janice McGuire loaded her daughter, Mandy, into the car. It was a long drive to Chatta-nooga, but Janice had enrolled Mandy in a small kindergarten program in the basement of an Episcopal church. When she first visited St. Nicholas School, Janice was struck by the hallway with Sesame Street figures and tricycle lanes, and the colorful, inviting rooms for art class and snack time. Instead of remaining confined to a single room, St. Nicholas students moved throughout the church grounds. From singing songs in morning chapel to rotating through each teacher’s specialized classroom, these children were active and engaged in an educational atmosphere that, despite her seven-year-career as a high school educator, Janice had never seen before.

By the time Mandy entered Level 3, Janice had settled into the St. Nicholas community as a parent and advocate for Director Zelma Lans-

ford’s school program. When a teaching position opened up, Director Lansford received an eager recommendation from the social studies teacher in Upper Primary, Deborah Neighbors. Janice had been Ms. Neighbors’ teacher when she was a student at Red Bank High School. Ms. Neighbors knew of Janice’s unlimited creativity, and was confident that Janice’s imagination and joy of learning would be a great match for the St. Nicholas program.

Janice had always planned to return to high school education, but when asked if she would take the position, Janice thought to herself, “I’m hooked. Let’s give it a shot.” In the fall of 1975, Janice joined the faculty of St. Nicholas School. Her younger daughter, Hannah, would soon follow her older sister at the school.

Over the next three decades, Janice McGuire Robbins watched as the school slowly grew in size and reputation. In much the

same way, her leadership and influence continued to evolve. As St. Nicholas began considering a move to a new campus, Janice was able to calm the fears and concerns such a bold step would involve.

How could chapel work in a gym? It was such a different environment from Grace Church. Janice was undeterred, knowing that chapel was about the feeling inside the person, not the bricks and walls of a certain building.

JANICE ROBBINS’ STORYBy Krista Ross and Mark Fallo

She knew that God was mak-ing the move right along with the rest of the school and in fact, being ever-present, would already be there, expecting us. She worked to deepen the school’s mission, introducing more student involvement in chapel. Over the years, Janice has used a steady hand to help guide the school’s direction, first as a teacher, then as an administrator and chaplain.

The Rev. Buckley Robbins, Janice’s husband, first worked as a priest at Grace Church where he served on the board of the school as well as led many chapels. When he was called to be the rector at St. Fran-cis in Ooltewah, Buckley continued to lead chapel on a regular basis. His connection to St. Nicholas, while part of Janice’s story, is a story in its

own rite and continues today.

In much the same way, the connections to Janice continue to unfold for the rest of her family. In the spring of 2008, Janice’s first grand-child, Maddie Logan ’08, graduated from St. Nicholas. The following fall, her second grandchild, Louisa Bohner, enrolled as a Level 1. And daughter Mandy, who motivated Janice to find St.

Nicholas in the first place, has worked alongside her mom as a colleague and friend for the past several years.

When reflecting on her life at St. Nicholas, Janice will always say she “backed into teaching for all sorts of reasons – none of them particularly lofty.” She couldn’t have imagined how she would be called upon to join the mission of St. Nicholas, how a lifetime of spiritual devotion and love of learning would shape the futures of so many children. Janice says she “was being cared for and blessed with a life’s work,” but we now know that on the first morning Janice brought her daughter to kindergarten, a greater plan was in store.

The story of Janice Robbins is not the only story to be told; there are so many over the years, each as personal and meaningful as any. But in many ways, Janice’s story represents the very best of St. Nicholas and its impact on generations of students, parents, and teachers. Our theme this year is From the Past Will Come the Future. For Janice and for each member of the St. Nicholas family, there is a joy inherent in the experience. And it’s a joy we share in common, linking our past with the present, guiding us into the next half-century as St. Nicholas continues to grow and evolve.

This report represents contributions of the Focused on the Future Capital Campaign, Annual Fund, fundraising benefits and other gifts to the school, restricted and non-restricted, from July 1, 2007 – June 30, 2008.

Gifts to St. Nicholas School come from alumni, parents, past parents, grandparents, friends, foundations, faculty and staff. On behalf of the entire St. Nicholas family, thank you to each and every one of the donors listed, whose donations were made during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008.

Every effort has been made to insure the accuracy of each of our donors. If any information is listed incorrectly or if there are omissions, please contact us. We apologize for any errors or omissions.

Annual Fund SupportersThe Annual Fund is an essential component of St. Nicholas’ yearly operations. The school depends on the support of families, alumni, grandparents, friends, foundations and corporations to make the difference between income from tuitions and fees and the actual cost of providing a St. Nicholas experience for each student.

Deferred Gifts . . . a lasting legacyOne of the most important sources of financial support for a school like St. Nicholas is in the area known as Deferred Gifts. These are gifts that include bequests, annuities, trusts and life insurance policies. Gifts of this type result from the thoughtful and careful planning by a friend of St. Nicholas who makes a decision that it appropriate for his or her financial plan. Their decisions results in a gift to St. Nicholas as a later time, but one that often includes important tax benefits that are taken into consideration as the donor makes his or her own financial plans. Please contact the St. Nicholas Development Director if you would like more information about planned and deferred gifts to St. Nicholas. Types of deferred gifts are listed below.

BequestsA bequest is the simple act of making a testamentary gift through a will. A bequest can provide enormous satisfaction as a thoughtful declaration of values.

Insurance PoliciesAnother popular vehicle for deferred giving is the use of life insur-ance. People most interested in gifts of life insurance are those with good income but without substantial assets for giving at the present. These are financially secure and no longer need the benefit that life insurance provides.

Charitable Remainder TrustsA “CRT” is a simple trust which pays income for life and which re-verts to the school after the death of the beneficiaries. This vehicle for making a deferred gift is becoming increasingly popular.

Other Methods of Making a Deferred GiftOther methods of deferred gifts include variations on the “CRT,” such as the lead trust, the annuity trust and the charitable gift annuity.

As in numerous previous years, we wish to thank all parents, grandparents and friends of St. Nicholas students for their generosity in gifts to the Burrows Library of St. Nicholas School. The Birthday Book Club is a means chosen by many to honor a child’s birthday by donating a book in the child’s name. Others make contributions to the Library as memorial or celebration gifts. We thank you for remembering the St. Nicholas Library.

Tripp has worked profes-sionally as an actor region-

ally and in New York since he graduated from NYU in May of 2004. He writes, “I’ll always attribute my first major theatri-cal experience to St. Nicholas and the Billy Dean show we did at the Tivoli Theater. I remem-ber being really excited about playing Winnie the Pooh and something about the honey jar getting stuck on my face. Basically, I think it was the first time I made an audience laugh and to this day I don’t know of anything better.”

“Last Christmas I fulfilled a big dream of performing at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta with the White Christmas tour. I am currently auditioning and dreaming of the time I’ll work on Broadway.”

Tripp also works as a freelance editor in the educational support industry and is currently play-ing Buzz the Bee in the Little Orchestra Society’s Lolli-Pops concerts.

searching on Facebook for some long lost friends, and of course encountered a few links for St. Nicholas. I just looked through the website, and I must say that I am thoroughly impressed with the direction of the school and how the lasting appeal of this institution has appeared to be strengthened. I was fortunate enough to attend McCallie and then Princeton, and am currently working at Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut. I believe it was no coincidence that I went from St. Nicholas to those other institutions, and I can say that a significant portion of my academic and professional progress was due to the guidance from teachers at St. Nicholas. I hope the school is making it through these uncertain economic times as best as can be expected, and that the fall is ending up well.”

He has been named one of 60 Presidential Scholar candi-dates in the Arts as part of the 2009 Presiden-tial Scholars Program. The candidates were nominated from over 6,500 participants in the annual youngARTS competition conducted by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. Inclusion in the Presidential Scholars, now in

its 45th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school se-niors. Each year 141 Scholars, including up to 20 Scholars in the Arts, are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities. This year, over 3,000 students are eligible for the program’s academic component, based on outstand-ing scores on the SAT or ACT exam. Of these, 121 will be selected as Presidential Scholars. Trent began writing a journal about his recovery from critical injuries received in a bicycle accident last June in the hospital before he was able to speak. The journal was submitted to the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. He was chosen as a national finalist, recognized by youngArts and was chosen as one of two Tennessee finalists in the Presidential Scholars Program. He is described as “a testimony to strength and creativity.”Scholars will be invited to Washington, D.C., for several days in June to receive the Presidential Scholars medallion at a recognition ceremony.

a St. Nicholas education. Academically, the children shined. As St. Nicholas students entered elementary schools around Chatta-nooga, many teachers recognized the excel-lence of their kindergarten education.

It wasn’t long before parents from outside the Grace Church community requested admission, and students from Methodist, Presbyterian, and Lutheran denominations established St. Nicholas’ proud tradition of diversity.

After 12 years of instruction, St. Nicholas School faced a defining moment. In the early 1970s, Chattanooga’s public schools began to include kindergarten in their elementary education. St. Nicholas lead-ers decided to investigate the possibility that their program was no longer needed. They quickly learned that parents not only wanted to keep the kindergarten, but also to grow the school. Director

Zelma [Hammel] Lansford answered their enthusiasm with a program that concentrated on the development of the individual child, emphasizing the process of learning, not simply the product.

Zelma placed at St. Nicholas’ core the philosophy that “each child is an individual – with different needs and different levels of prior experiences …

[therefore] each child will be given the opportunity to grow and develop as an individual.” St. Nicholas teachers became more than motiva-tors, fulfilling the unique role of “guiding the child’s self-direction in his own process of learning.”

In post-industrial America, most schools operated in an assembly-line, one-size-fits-all mentality. St. Nicholas

broke free of those limitations, instituting a program that was child-oriented as well as learning-oriented, instilling intrinsic motivation as well as independence by including elements of instruction, independent

work, and exploration. It was stimulating and challenging. It was engaging and creative. It made a lasting impact on motivation and learning. In short, St. Nicholas was not only fun, it also developed attitudes and habits neces-sary for a lifetime of success and happiness.

St. Nicholas School Commemorative Painting The anniversary painting of St. Nicholas School commemorates fifty years of excellence in education. Established in 1958 as a church centered kindergarten by Grace Episcopal Church, St. Nicholas has grown to include grades PK through 5. After 36 years at the Grace Church location, St. Nicholas moved to its present campus.

The painting incorporates images of activities at both locations. The liturgi-cal procession represents the chapel program which has marked the be-ginning of each school day since

its inception, as well as promotions and other celebrations. The arches in the lower center are part of the original church as well as the St. Nicholas stained glass window seen on the right side. This window was given in memory of Jim E. Milburn, an early supporter of the school. “All Things Bright and Beautiful” (designed by James and Alva Fields and donated by Curtis and Suzy Baggett) is the name of the stained glass segments seen in the upper corners and represent the stained glass which will be used in the future Chapel. The centerpiece of the painting is a tree, whose spreading branches encompass the tools of learning – music, the arts, literature and science – depicting the school as a place “where the love of learning takes root”. Children are gathered beneath the tree in the pursuit of discovery and wisdom, as their friend, “Brownie” the bunny keeps watch.

The painting was created by Lyn Martin, a former student of St. Nicholas School. To see pictures from her days at St. Nicholas, check out page 7. Lyn is an award winning illustrator of children’s books. More of Lyn’s work can be seen at: http://picture-book.com/users/lynmartin
