Governor Hassan ran for governor be-cause she wants “everyone in New Hamp-shire to have the opportunity to succeed.” Please join the Chamber in welcoming her to Portsmouth for our Bank of America Breakfast Series Forum on Tuesday, April 16th from 7:30am-9:00am at the Portsmouth Harborside Hotel. Here, she is expected to discuss education and job creation and most importantly a balanced budget for the next biennium. Hassan has made a bold move by including licens-ing fees from expanded gambling in her budget and has gained the support of the Senate for such expansion. Healthcare is also a big issue which the governor will

have to grapple with as it has a significant impact on the state budget. And of course there will be an opportunity for you to ask questions. Hassan, who will be the only female Democratic US governor in 2013, has already made history. She along with NH Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Kelly Ayotte and NH Representatives Carol Shea-Porter and Ann McLane Kuster are the first-ever all-women delegation. We look forward to working with her to help make NH the best place to stay, work and play!

A message from our PresidentSpring has arrived! Finally! And so has spring skiing for those of us who do not want winter to end. But I think the majority of us are looking forward to spring activities….

and Restaurant Week Portsmouth & the Seacoast! We have reached 49 participating restaurants again for the third time, just short of the elusive 50 mark. RWPS starts on April 4th and runs through April 13th. Need I remind you to make reservations; oh I guess I just did. Get out, have fun and enjoy our great dining destinations.

Spring is also when we historically welcome our Governor, and 2013 is no exception. Gov. Maggie Hassan will join us on Tuesday, April 16. There are key issues at every level. The state must deal with creating revenue for infrastructure and education while continuing to look at expenses. Will gambling revenue be included? Gov. Hassan would like to, would you?

On the local level, parking this summer and beyond is expected to be a problem. The High-Hanover Garage has already been closed several times because it is full; imagine what the warm weather will bring! It will affect residents, businesses and of course some of the over 2,000,000 visitors who come to Portsmouth. The Chamber is very concerned and is stepping up its efforts to help find a solution. Unfortunately there will be some pain this summer, but we hope we can work together to get through it. The solution has to support ALL of us. The downtown contributes more money per square mile, by far, than any other part of the City. We need to work through this temporary condition so that we do not affect our status as a go-to destination. If we can create a light at the end of the tunnel we all will find it much easier to cope.

Connections electronic newsletter is published monthly by the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce and reaches 2,000+ business people throughout NE.

I am also sure that we all can cope with warm weather. The sidewalk licenses are up for renewal for those restaurants, and perhaps some new ones, to set up their enclosed dining areas and add “al fresco” dining for the summer of 2013.

This summer’s highlight event has to be the return of the Memorial Bridge. The NHDOT and Archer-Western have worked very hard to ensure we will open the bridge pretty much as scheduled. Many events are planned and we hope to participate in a way to maximize the impact to our city, Kittery and the Seacoast. Most notably we are looking forward to seeing former Mayor Eileen Foley cut the ribbon she tied back together when the Memorial Bridge closed over one year ago. It will be her second ribbon cutting for the Memorial Bridge; the first was in 1923 when at 5 years old she opened the original Memorial Bridge. At 95 years young she will make history when she cuts the ribbon on the new and improved Memorial Bridge.

And of course there is the upcoming

the Chamber’s annual dinner summer celebration. Look for the announcement of date and location soon!

eCoast Tech Crawl

The eCoast is back...

Doug Bates, President of GPCC & Mark Miller, New Chair of eCoast

Alpha:Meet & Greet

Beta: Tech Talks

Sometimes one moment wraps thing’s up in a neat little bow. For me, standing on the stage at Portsmouth’s Iconic Press Room delivering robot trivia to the Seacoast’s technical elite and giving out awards to the eCoast steering committee was that moment. Sharing the stage to my right was the well respected President of The Greater Ports-mouth Chamber, Doug Bates. I’ve gotten to know Doug over the past three years as I served on the eCoast Committee and as host of the Chamber’s radio show, Seacoast Business Connections. I’ve grown to respect him as a community leader and revere him as a friend. Now, during this moment, he stood beside me in full support of my new role as Chair of the eCoast Committee.

As Doug and I interacted with this audience of highly technical and savvy business minds, who were using their advanced cognitive skills to answer silly questions about fictional robots, I realized that this mo-ment was the eCoast.

The Press Room was the final stop on the wildly successful Tech Crawl. This crowd had spent their night collaborating with other te-chies at the Alpha Loft and taking in knowledge from industry speakers at The Thirsty Moose. This night was collaboration, knowledge and geeky fun all wrapped up in a neat little bow right in front of me. This was the eCoast.

There was, however, one more element – hard work. The individuals from the eCoast Committee received awards for their various contribu-tions to the team. The top award “Optimus Prime,” which is eCoast’s equivalent of an MVP award, went to Brendan Flavin of Pixel Media.

Speaking of Brendan he had a great idea a few months back. Instead of eCoast’s usual format of a Summit with a ton of cool speakers, why not have an un-Conference where the participants decided on the top-ics and collaborate to deliver the content? We loved it and so did the audience at The Press Room! Now you can look forward to it.

Join us on Thursday, June 6th for a Responsive Design Sum-mit and Un-conference at The Red Hook Brewery. We will have a couple of great speakers as well. For more information and to register, please visit: http://ecoastresponsivedesign.eventbrite.com
