CONNECTIONS FALL 2018 A RICHMOND TRADITION SINCE 1976 FROM POLAND TO GERMANY TO RVA The mission of Circle Center is to keep families together by having a safe place for older adults to be during the day while their family members work or receive that needed respite. Because we get to know our parcipants and the acvies and care provided is so person-centered, we oſten get to know the very individual details of someone’s history. Our community is woven with unique histories and we want to acknowledge the successes and struggles that our parcipants have been through during their life. We take pride when we are able to provide them with the services that complement that history and their needs as they age. We also serve as a healthy and healing place for those who have been through physical and emoonal trauma. Meet Alan Zimm, our 98-year-old Parcipant who has lived in Richmond for decades, but is originally from Poland and is a Holocaust survivor. During our reminiscing group at the Center one day, Alan told his peers about the challenges he faced as a young man. One of 10 children, Alan was taken capve along with members of his family and transported to a concentraon camp named Buchenwald. Although he was separated from his brothers during his imprisonment, they were at the same camp and endured the same atrocies. The majority of Alan‘s family was killed during the war he and his brother Solomon were the only two survivors. Upon returning to Poland he was raised in his family home in his hometown, Kolo. He has fond memories of being raised among many pets including horses, german shepherds, ponies and canarys! At their home site in Poland, they grew produce including vegetables like cabbage, potatoes as well as fruit trees with apples pears and plums. It was in Poland that Alan met the love of his life, Halina. In 1948 they were married in Germany. They lived there for three years in order to obtain a sponsor and visa to come to America legally. The Jewish women’s organizaon in Germany helped them to legally travel to America and in 1952 Alan, Halina, and Solomon arrived in Richmond, Virginia. Alan and Halina became parents to two sons and two daughters. Halina enjoyed speaking at women’s clubs and Alan begin his own tailoring business in Richmond. Alan said with his sll thick Polish accent “Our shop would make men’s suits, slacks and ladies suits, skirts and dresses”. Alan shared that his favorite part of being a tailor was “using the sewing machine” and “I also created one or two of my very own designs!” he said with a proud smile. At Circle Center, Alan enjoys socializing with other parcipants and staff as well as keeping fit with our wellness acvies! 4900 West Marshall Street Richmond, Virginia 23230 (804) 355-5717 www.circlecenterva.org facebook.com/circlecenter Circle Center Adult Day Services | CONNECTIONS FALL 2018 1 www.circlecenterva.org BOARD OF DIRECTORS Marshall Bigelow Paula Desel (Chair) Shane Finnegan Christine Hagan Yvonne Haynes Emmett Heltzel Melanie Lee W. FROM POLAND TO GERMANY TO RVAThe mission of Circle Center is to keep families together by having a safe place for older adults to be during the day while their family members work or receive that needed respite. Because we get to know our participants and the activities and care provided is so person-centered, we often get to know the very individual details of someone’s history. Our community is woven with unique histories and we want to acknowledge the successes and struggles that our participants have been through during their life. We take pride when we are able to provide them with the services that complement that history and their needs as they age. We also serve as a healthy and healing place for those who have been through physical and emotional trauma. Meet Alan Zimm, our 98-year-old Participant who has lived in Richmond for decades, but is originally from Poland and is a Holocaust survivor. During our reminiscing group at the Center one day, Alan told his peers about the challenges he faced as a young man. CHANGES AROUND THE CENTERThis summer two physical changes took place at Circle Center! Our lovely new reception area and the installation of a beautiful new fenced in garden. We are grateful to Henrico County for funding our reception area. Our garden was a group effort spearheaded by Genworth and executed by Backyard Farmer and HandsOn Greater Richmond. We are so appreciative of our continued relationship with Genworth and all of the wonderful things they do to support us and we are fortunate to have formed new partnerships with Backyard Farmer and HandsOn Greater Richmond. If anyone wants to view the garden please feel free to ask a staff member and they will accompany you! Enjoy our before and after pictures of our new spaces.

HANDSON GREATER RICHMONDUPS was at it again when Give a Day RVA took place on September 29! We have stunning new flower boxes under our portico – built by Richmond Community Tool Bank and stained by the volunteers from UPS. Our outdoor landscaping is ready for winter with new mulch, weeding, trimmed grass and bushes, and an overall sprucing up of the outside. But that’s not all! UPS really got to work and painted our employee breakroom. It needed a new coat of paint and they tackled that with competence as they do all of their volunteer work here at the Center. We can’t thank UPS enough for their continued support of our facility.

MESSAGE FROM AMYDear Families and Friends,

Once again fall is upon us and we find ourselves thankful for the many friends and supporters of Circle Center. If you’ve been to the Center lately you’ve noticed that we were able to renovate our reception area with the help of Henrico County and we have added a garden on the side of our building compliments of Genworth and HandsOn Greater Richmond.

We have noticed throughout the last several months that participants are coming to the Center for the first time more fragile and further along in their disease process than they have in the past. This could be for a variety of reasons. It could be that families are trying to “do it all” and not ask for help with their loved one until showing signs of illness themselves. Possibly finances are a factor and they may not be aware of our affordable day services or that we have scholarship available. It is possible that families do not know about us! As supporters of Circle Center and our mission to keep families together, please continue to reach out to your family, friends, church families and co-workers if you notice that they have a need for our services. Circle Center has always had a “word of mouth” referral network, and we would like for that to continue.

The generosity of others and their willingness to support our Center continues to amaze me. As we reflect during this holiday season, we remember those who have donated their time, their talent, their resources. We are especially thankful for the families who trust us to care for their loved ones. Please continue to talk about Circle Center to your friends, your families and your peers to let them know who we are and why it’s important for them to continue to support us and our mission.

Have a wonderful holiday season,

Amy C. Bodman, CEO

ADDITIONAL WAYS TO HELPWe receive so much support here at Circle Center in a variety of ways – from the bigger more obvious sources - donations of items we use regularly, financial support from individuals, corporations, and grants, the gift of time from all of our amazing volunteers – to the smaller ways that help behind the scenes. Two of these are Amazon Smile and your Kroger shopping card. Each time you shop at Kroger or Amazon, a portion of your purchase, at no cost to you, can go toward supporting our Center. Please consider this option as a way to help us to generate a little more financial support toward our Needs Based Scholarship Fund. To link your Kroger card to Circle Center please visit http://www.kroger.com and login to your account. Search for us by our name or number – BU630, and click enroll. New users will need to create an account which requires a valid email address and an awards card. Thank you for taking that extra step to help us generate a few more dollars for our scholarship program! To support our Center through Amazon, login to smile.amazon.com, hover your mouse over Accounts & Lists, click on “Your AmazonSmile”, type in Circle Center Adult Day Services in the search bar and we will pop up. Just click on our name and you’re done!

THE HOLIDAY SHOPPE IS COMING!Circle Center’s Holiday Shoppe will take place on December 5th, 6th, and 7th. This event is a wonderful way for each of our participants to independently choose their own gift for their family members and caregivers. We will be collecting new and gently used items for sale in our shoppe until November 30th. It takes many volunteers to make this a success and there are many options available. If you are interested in sharing your time to help participants shop, prepare the tables or wrap gifts please contact Mary Branzelle at [email protected]. Families please be on the lookout for information about how to register your loved one to participate in shopping for the holiday!
