Five Images of Service: Part 2

Dear Sisters and Brothers at St. Peter,

You are invited to attend a congregational Holy Week retreat from 8:30 a.m.-noon on Saturday, April 13, hosted by the Mission Leadership Team (see page 12). Deaconess E. Louise Williams will facilitate the retreat using five images to help us picture our life of Christian service based on Jesus’ ministry and visualize how we “Go in Peace. Serve the Lord.” after worship. In this issue of Connections, we share the images of storyteller, doorkeeper/go-between, and keeper of the light

as described by Deaconess Louise.*

Storyteller: Image – books, CDs, brochures

“In the Gospels we have stories about Jesus. We also have stories that Jesus told. There we meet Jesus the storyteller who gives us an example to follow and to whom our diaconal storytelling points.” The storyteller “seeks to touch the hearer more deeply, to give space in the story for hearers to find

themselves, to unleash imagination and memory, to open the possibility for healing, for challenge, for transformation.”

Reading the gospel is one opportunity for storytelling … “to tell the Jesus stories—to help the biblical stories come alive in the hearts of people.” Another aspect is “to help people tell their own stories of their pain and suffering, of their joys and triumphs, of deaths and resurrections, of

God at work among them—to bring those stories back to the community for witness, celebration, instruction, and prayer.”

“In many places in our world, there is no lack of information, but the truth is harder to come by.” All stories are not “feel good” stories… . There is also the story that is hard to hear or hard to tell; the truth that is difficult to bear so people try to block it out… .”

“It takes time to tell a story and patience to listen to it. It can’t be done in ten-second sound bites or short video segments, and it

can’t always be done in English.”

Doorkeeper/Go-Between: Image – doors

Doorkeepers and go-betweens historically have stood at the boundaries between the church and the world. “They were positioned at the edges, some would say the cutting edge. They moved across those boundaries as go-between, as agent, as

emissary—from bishop to community, from God to creation, from church to world. … They were responsive and mobile and accessible,” leading the church to service in the world and inviting the world into the church.

“Jesus has shown us the way … [as He] was on the boundary

Page 5: CONNECTIONS...changing world through a community engaged in Worship, Bible Study and Christian Service. Bryan Borger, Senior Pastor revborger@mac.com Cell: 574-386-6401 Adam Clark,

CONNECTIONS APRIL 2019Lay Deaconess

between heaven and earth, between God and humanity. Jesus moved among the people so that they could cry out to Him or reach out to touch Him. Jesus … ushered in the reign of God into the fallen creation.”

Today we might call such service “ministries of outreach and hospitality and interpretation and mediation and reconciliation, bringing distant parties together, arranging welcome spaces, making the word come alive in language that people can understand. It’s both taking a stand on the boundaries and moving back and forth.”

“It’s not an easy place to be, on the boundaries, pulled in opposite directions, perhaps seeing the point of view of people on both sides. Most people would rather avoid than mediate in a conflict … would rather construct barriers than cross them.”

Keeper of the Light: Image – lit candle

This image has its origins in the ancient ritual of the Easter Vigil which begins in darkness. A new fire is lighted, and a new Paschal candle is lit and carried into the darkness as the people waited, proclaiming, Christ is our light. Hymns are sung “inviting the whole creation to rejoin at Christ’s resurrection.

The stories of God’s work among God’s holy people are retold, and then the catechumens are baptized.”

This kind of service is about “having the light, bearing the light, being the light and shedding light. [It] is about hope. It is about knowing that what we see is not what we get. The night does not have the last word. The light shines in the darkness and is not overcome by it.”

Keeping the light is also about having vision. Light “keeps the vision alive. And it exposes those places where the vision is distorted or obscured. It calls God’s people again and again to return to the life of that vision.”

“Some would say that things are just better kept under the cover of darkness. It’s ok to expose some other country’s human rights violations, but not ours. It’s ok to shed light over there but not

on my dirty laundry.”

A keeper of the light risks going into the darkness. Those who bear the light span a spectrum of ministry, “from washing feet on bended knee to standing on tip toes and prophetically challenging the principalities and powers.”

Plan to attend the Holy Week Retreat to learn more about these images and prepare your heart

and mind as we ponder anew Jesus’ Passion.

CONNECTIONS APRIL 2019Stephen Ministry

Lent, Easter, … and Stephen Ministry by Mike Fonck, SPLC Stephen Ministry Leadership Team

We are now a few weeks into Lent, preparing ourselves for the feast that is indeed the foundation of our faith: Easter! Lent is a time to look within, to

review where we spiritually may have fallen short, and how we can do better in a spirit of repentance, to make ourselves stronger to face the

curveballs that life can throw at us. In other words, TO BE TRANSFORMED! Easter is a feast that kicks off a season of renewed hope

that all in never lost, that God in his everlasting love will always be there for

us, to be with us through all the ups and downs of life. We are so fortunate here at St. Peter Lutheran Church that God has blessed a number of

members right here in our congregation to serve as fully trained Stephen Ministers in His name to minister to our brothers and sisters who might be

dealing with difficult situations.

As Pastor Clark mentioned during a recent Sunday Morning Adult

Education Session, St. Peter in his first Epistle wrote…

Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you…Be alert: Your

enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to

devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the

family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of

sufferings…And the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in

Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and

make you strong, firm and steadfast.

Pastor Borger likewise confirmed this when he mentioned in his sermon on the First Sunday of Lent that the devil is real and always trying to send us

true temptations to make us lose our focus on Christ. We have a calling and a responsibility both to ourselves and to our friends and neighbors to stand

firm in our faith despite what life may put in our way. Nice in theory, but how

do we do this in reality? One way is through fellowship with our fellow members and neighbors; it is always easier to stay strong when others

support you. And our Stephen Ministry is here to do just that – to support

those that need that extra help during challenging or critical times! As St. Peter said, “cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you” -- that is

why we have established Stephen Ministry here at St. Peter – to help you or someone else to cast off their anxiety and to lean on the Lord for

assistance. We are not here to FIX the situation or to provide solutions, but to be a representative of God to walk with a care receiver, to listen, to share

God’s love with them in a loving, confidential relationship. Our own Stephen

Ministry Program relies on you to let us know who we can help.

If you would like to learn more about Stephen Ministry or to get involved in it

as either a Stephen Minister or as a care receiver, or you know someone who might benefit from getting someone to walk with them through some

difficult times, please contact either one of our St. Peter Stephen Ministry Leaders (Mike Fonck at [email protected], 574-535-3894 or Vickie

Hess at [email protected], 413-552-6354) or one of our Pastors.

Stephen Ministry

Part of the commitment our Stephen Ministers make goes well beyond their fifty hours of initial training; they also take part in continuing education

throughout their respective tenures in the ministry with the goal of continual

growth. For example, we here at St. Peter Lutheran Church belong to a network of other local churches who also participate in Stephen Ministry.

Our own Stephen Ministers receive opportunities at continuing education both through this network and through various sessions within our own

group. On Tuesday evening, April 9th at 6:00 P.M., Calvary Baptist Church in South Bend (3001 W. Cleveland Rd.) will be hosting a dinner, followed

by a seminar on the subject of Loneliness, led by a local counselor, to improve our skills in this area of service. Our learning is never ended so

that we can better serve you and your friends and neighbors! The great news about this event is that it will be OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, so if you

would like to take part in the meal and the teaching, the cost is only $5.00. Hope you can join us! Need a ride? Just contact Mike or Vickie.

H.E.A.R.T. Update Hospitality, Emergency, and Response Team

St. Peter HEART evolved out of a conviction that our Christian focus on hospitality called us to be intentional about caring for medical and other needs, as well as planning and training for more unlikely emergencies (e.g. severe weather, fire, security). On Saturday, March 23rd, we met as a group. Julie Tekler, who trains our firefighters, trained us on CPR, First Aid, and St. Peter’s AED. Then Pastor Clark and Officers James Bartlett and Kyle Glaze led a discussion of hospitality and security. Here are the things YOU should know that came out of that meeting:

1. Hospitality Remains the Focus •Medical emergencies, the most likely emergency we might have, are still highly unlikely. Severe weather and fire, more unlikely still. And active violence, the rarest of all (any given church has a risk less than 0.0008%!). However, hospitality is needed all the time! •Furthermore, as Officer Bartlett and our other first responders showed us, our hospitality already is our “best tool” and “best practice” for emergencies and security. •Therefore, hospitality remains our focus at all times.

2. “Doorkeepers”: A New Sunday Servant •Medical and security professionals agree: in an emergency, not everyone needs to know every plan. Rather, what is KEY are well-trained leaders who know what to do. At St. Peter, these leaders will be called “doorkeepers” •During worship, doorkeepers sit at the front door to monitor both the parking lot and the sanctuary. •In the event of a medical or other emergency, they will step forward along with the pastors (particularly Pastor Clark, who was also trained) to lead the response. •If a doorkeeper asks you to do something (e.g. call 911), please do so. Otherwise, please refrain from crowding someone who is having an emergency. Your care is appreciated, but the patient needs our first responders, and just them.

2. Doorkeepers and Other HEART Leaders are Posted and Attentive •HEART also brings together with the doorkeepers other trained resources: medical personnel in the congregation (nurses, a nurse practictioner, fire-fighters and EMTs). Our police officers, James and Kyle. Stephen Ministers to provide care to those with heavy hearts. And ushers and greeters, who are already the first wave of hospitality.

H.E.A.R.T.

9

CONNECTIONS APRIL 2019

•All of these HEART leaders are posted on the door in the Usher’s Closet, if needed. •Even more importantly, together we are developing a culture of awareness, so that all HEART members are aware of and responsive to needs on a weekly basis. If there is a need, they likely will already be moving before you look for them!

3. Sunday Startup, 10am: HEART and Sunday Servants •Starting on March 31st, the HEART members for the day (doorkeepers, medical, ushers, greeters), along with the other Sunday Servants for the day (elder, lector, acolyte, pastors) will meet briefly at 10am by the font for a short prayer. This “Sunday Startup” will also allow all these leaders to see who their resources for the day are.

4. New Tools: What and Where •AED – the teal and yellow AED provides a means to address heart attacks and related problems that require a shock. One you turn the AED on, it tells you what to do, and it only provides a shock if its medical analysis demands one. The doorkeepers will be the primary users of this tool, which will hang by the front door. •First Aid Kit – we are currently updating our First Aid Kit, which will also eventually move from the kitchen to the front door. •Fire Extinguisher – currently we have a fire extinguisher in the Fellowship Hall and another sometimes in the Ushers’ Closet. The latter will likely move to the front door. •Panic Buttons – these trigger an alarm that brings police with drawn weapons, and so are used ONLY in the extremely unlikely event of active violence, NOT other emergencies. The Doorkeepers and Pastor Clark will have these, so you might see one. But they will be kept secure in a safe, removed only by the doorkeepers and PC, and then returned.

5. Broad Policies for Emergencies •First Aid / Medical Assistance: the doorkeeper of the day takes the lead, assigning tasks to medical personnel present, to other doorkeepers, and to others if necessary. •Severe Weather – PC and the doorkeepers will direct you to “shelter-in-place” in the strong parts of the church. The strongest are: Bathrooms and Hall, Sacristy and in the corners behind fire doors in Sanctuary, Cry Room. The next are: the Church Office and Coat Room. •Fire – PC and the doorkeepers will direct everyone outside the building. In a building with construction like that of our church, a spreading fire is extremely unlikely. •Security – PC, the doorkeepers, and our police officers will: call the police via panic buttons, instruct the congregation which doors are safest to use to exit, and work to contain the threat. Again, this is extremely unlikely (less than 0.0008% risk)!

In all of this, we give thanks for God’s continued care, and for the way he fits together the skills of many in the congregation as we show hospitality and care to one another. “Perfect love drives out fear” (1 Jn 4:18), and we are confident that in God’s loving work in and through us, we have all the resources we need to respond to any needs that arise.

CONNECTIONS APRIL 2019Where to Find Us Online

If you’ve never been or are new to the

congregation and don’t know what it’s

about, you will not want to miss this

fabulous event! SPLC holds it every

spring as a fundraiser for Resurrection

Lutheran Academy. The church is

transformed – you will be amazed – into

a beautiful venue for friendly and

sometimes ferocious bidding on silent

auction items. Nibble on gorgeous,

decadent desserts while you sip a glass

of wine and enjoy exceptional musical

talent. This is a great evening out: invite

your parents, other couples, your

neighbor, anyone you can think of who

likes a festive atmosphere for a good

cause. We need lots and lots of

volunteers! If you would like to be

involved in helping make the event

happen, either through donating auction

items, underwriting, helping to secure

donat ions f rom retai lers/service

providers, assisting with set-up/clean-

up, or you have questions at all, please

talk to Kim Eveler (574-674-7010 or [email protected]) We can’t wait for this

year’s event!!!
