Connections for Caregivers
A Newsletter and Training Calendar especially for Child Care Providers July to September 2012
Top of the Town 2012,
CCRC’s annual fundraiser
(now in its fourth year) was
a huge success. Over 900
tickets were distributed to
patrons, sponsors, vendors
and volunteers. Eleven
buildings with 16 different
stops in downtown Tulsa
opened up their doors for
participants to enjoy food,
beverages and music from
local restaurants and
musicians. In addition to
the vendor donations, 17
different companies and
individuals donated
(through sponsorship)
funding to support our
projects and initiatives.
The event opened with a
champagne toast to
celebrate CCRC’s 25th
Anniversary. Thanks to
everyone for their support
of this absolutely wonderful
evening. Please visit our
website for details on the
supporters and thank them
by supporting their
businesses.

Infants,Toddlers and Routines
As an infant and toddler caregiver, there are many
routines that are done during the average day. One of
these is mealtimes. Janet Gonzalez-Mena says that this
routine “enhances attachment, increases feelings of
security, and provides warmth, acceptance, and an
overall sense of well-being.” To foster these things, we
need to get in tune with the child’s needs. We need to
watch for verbal, as well as, non-verbal signals. Holding
an infant during bottle feeding and allowing toddlers to
help prepare food, serve meals, and clean up can help
with growth in autonomy and emotional well-being. We
need to recognize children’s typical developmental
behaviors and promote responsiveness to individual
cues. Things, such as, decreased appetite, picky eating,
and food refusals are typical behaviors that can often
become power struggles and can lead children to
develop more significant eating and emotional problems.
We need to offer a variety of healthy foods and allow
children to choose what they eat and how much, to avoid
some of these issues. Mealtimes can be a stressful time
in group care but with attention to cues and letting the
child take the lead it can be a pleasant and enjoyable
experience.
apetito, comiendo exigente y alimentos denegaciones

A Cool Activity for a Hot Day
Have the kids ever asked you why they sweat on a hot day? Help them find out by having them do the following science experiment:
1. Hold your hand a few inches from your mouth and gently blow across the back of your hand
2. How does your skin feel where you blow on it? (It should feel cooler)
3. Next, generously spray the back of your hand with water.
4. Hold the moist hand a few inches from your mouth and blow across the back of your hand.
5. How does it feel this time? (The wet skin should feeler even cooler)
6. Notice that your wet hand stays cool as it dries. What’s going on here? We sweat to help keep our bodies cool. Sweat is mostly water and, as it dries, it cools our skin and helps us cool off on hot days. Now you know!
Ahora
ya sabes!
Edible Patriotic Flags
Enjoy a fun treat to celebrate Independence Day and
educate children about the holiday and the importance of
the flag. You will need several packages of graham
crackers, white icing, popsicle sticks, small paper cups and
food coloring. Give each child three paper cups with one
tablespoon of icing inside each cup. Reserve one cup to
have white icing and drop red and blue food coloring into the
other two cups. (You could also substitute red licorice for the
stripes, if desired.) Hand each child a popsicle stick and
have them mix the food coloring into each cup. Encourage
child to design his/her own flag by putting the icing on the
cracker. (Activity is for children 3 and up)

FROM THE NURSE
Disinfecting Toys Children often are, and should be encouraged to participate in hands on activities while in child care. While this is developmentally appropriate for children, providers must also be aware that when young children play, toys and equipment will become soiled. Many providers do not have a schedule in place for the cleaning of toys and equipment beyond what is required by licensing. Centers can develop their own schedules for washing toys based on the developmental levels of the children in care and the frequency of use of the toys and equipment. Providers caring for very young children (who tend to mouth toys and materials) may choose to wash toys several times each week. Older children likely do not need to have their toys and materials washed quite as often. Child care centers can use a mechanical dishwasher that meets the standard for cleaning and sanitizing dishes and often find that this is the most effective and quickest way to clean toys. If a center does not have this type of dishwasher, another method of cleaning toys is to put them in a tub of warm, soapy water. Let them soak for several minutes, then scrub them with a clean dish scrubber. After rinsing, soak the toys in a tub of disinfecting solution for at least 2 minutes. Then let the toys air dry completely before making them available to children.
The recommended and least expensive sanitizer for child care settings is household bleach. Household bleach is safe for child care settings when measured according to licensing instructions. (1 tsp. per quart of water) Because bleach solution loses its strength after 24 hours, mix a new batch every morning.
To mix a disinfecting bleach (items that do not have contact with the mouth) solution, use ¼ C. bleach to 1 gallon fresh water, or 1 T. bleach to 1 quart water, or ¾ teaspoon bleach per 1 C of water. A disinfectant must be in contact with items and toys long enough to kill the germs. The minimum time for the bleach solution to be in contact with a surface (called "contact time") is at least 2 minutes. A disinfecting solution is appropriate for: diaper changing areas, bathroom sinks, toilets, clean up of blood or body fluid spills, cleaning toys, cleaning equipment such as phones, tables and chairs, countertops and floors.
For sanitizing purposes (items that do have contact with the mouth), the recipe for bleach solution is 1 T. bleach to 1 gallon fresh water. The minimum contact time to sanitize surfaces is at least 2 minutes. A sanitizing solution is appropriate for: submerging eating utensils that have been washed thoroughly with detergent, submerging other kitchen items such as cups, plates & bowls (that have also been washed with detergent) and teething toys.
