Students enrolled in theWright State Lake CampusAgriculture program recentlyreturned from a study tourto California under the di-rection of Dr. Greg Homan.Participants included JordanHellwarth (Celina), MitchellSudhoff (Coldwater), KaraUhlenhake (Coldwater), Em-ily Wuebker (Maria Stein),and Matthew Riechart (Ma-ria Stein). Tour locationsincluded visits to San Fran-cisco, Modesto, and Fresno
areas of California, providingan opportunity for students tolearn about different forms ofagricultural production. Ac-cording to student, JordanHellwarth, Celina, it was un-believable how diversied thecrops were and the amount oftime and labor that goes intoproducing their crops.
The group participatedin the North American Col-leges and Teachers of Agri-culture Conference hostedby Modesto Junior College.Wright State Lake Campus
students competed in theDairy Judging Contest, withthe team placing 4th with teamsrepresenting colleges acrossthe United States. WrightState Lake Campus Student,Kara Uhlenkake, Coldwater, placed 5th individual.
Tanimura and Antle Pro-duce Company provided avaluable hands-on learningexperience for the Lake Cam-pus Students. This growerand shipper of fresh producein the Salinas area operates
over 5,000 acres in the centralCalifornia area. Students wereable to see elds of garlic, broccoli, onions, watermelon, and lettuce in production.Lettuce was being picked andprocessed while the studentswere on-sight. A tour of thecompany storage buildingshighlighted their food safetyand quality control standardsused in producing food usedthroughout the United Statesand abroad. Students wereamazed at the efciency, productivity, and diversity of
production in this operation.Learning about their diverseagricultural techniques wasa great experience. It wasinteresting to compare andcontrast the different kinds offarming that takes place saysKara Uhlenhake, Coldwater.
According to Mitch Sud-hoff , Coldwater, Californiais unique in that it is nothinglike Ohio. The culture, agri-culture, and climate in Cali-fornia is something thatis easier understood once
you have been there. Or-chards, produce, and vine-yards in the valleys camealong like corn and soybeanelds through Ohio. In otherareas large dairies dominatedthe landscape. The people weencounter were very generousconsidering we were strang-ers.
The Lake Campus Agri-culture Program is thankfulfor the support from MercerLandmark, which provideda partial sponsorship for stu-dents participating in the trip.
