What’s in the Valley Library? There’s an app for that...During the past week, we’ve been promoting a cool new game to our students. The game uses a free iPhone and Android phone app to lead students on a scavenger hunt through the Valley Library, earning points with each completed challenge. The challenges show students how to use the various resources in the library. As points accrue, students can win free prizes. 15 points earns them a free $2 drink card for the library café, and 20 points earns them a free Linus Pauling t-shirt.

The 13 total challenges comprise a trek, and the structure changes based on the content of the challenge. A student may be asked what they can check out at the Circulation Desk. They must find the Circulation Desk, find the answer, and type it into the SCVNGR app. A correct answer will result in points (usually two points per challenge) being added to their total. In another challenge, the student must use the library catalog to search for a specific book title and type in the exact call number, or snap a photo of something in the library’s Archives. It’s an innovative way to get students familiar with one of the most important resources on campus.

Twist and shout! There was plenty of twisting and shouting going on at the Spring Welcome party last week, and some cake-throwing as well! Reed lounge was packed with students gathering together to meet, socialize and play games. As always, those colossal sized pies from Pizza Pipeline were a big hit! Coincidentally, the party was also a birthday celebration for our lovable Takumi Sato of Japan. It seems to be customary in Japan to smear cake frosting all over the birthday boy’s face, and so Takumi ended up wearing most of the cake before getting down for a lively game of Twister. It certainly won’t be the last time we’ll see the Twister mat put to good use!

Saudi Arabia 28%

South Korea 9%

Japan 7%

OSU Cascades tripPathway students had the chance to visit the Cascades Campus of OSU last weekend. The students had the pleasure of staying at the picturesque Mount Bachelor Village Resort. Over the weekend, they explored the Asian Pacific Islander Festival, took a campus tour of OSU Cascades, shopped around the Old Mill District, ate at the popular Flatbread restaurant, and experienced the fresh mountain air on a hike with tour group Cascades Adventures. The main purpose of the trip was for Pathway students to explore the possibility of transferring to OSU Cascades in their second year of study. With perks like clean, crisp air, beautiful scenery and great shopping, who wouldn’t want to?
