SHARING OUR FAITH STORIES

On October 19th, members of Prince of Peace gathered at the OuterEdge Stage in downtown Appleton for a retreat to

learn about sharing our faith stories. (See photos on cover.) We began with a wonderful worship led by Colleen and the

praise band. We ended the worship with a ‘Thanksgiving for Baptism,’ by choosing a stone

out of the baptismal font with a picture on it that spoke to us of our faith journey. During

our mixer we shared why this stone spoke to us. I chose a red butterfly stone. Butterflies

are symbols for transformation and new life, a process that we go through continually on

our faith journeys. We grow through change, through transformation. When we look back

over our lives, perhaps we can see a variety of people and events that brought transforma-

tion to us and to our faith. Reflecting on those people and events and where you felt the

presence of God, what faith story could you tell of what happened?

Pastor Jean Devoll-Donaldson, from the East Central Synod of WI, shared with us ways to develop our faith stories.

One activity we did was to take a piece of butcher paper and fold it into four squares. On each square, we drew a pic-

ture or a symbol that represented a different aspect of our faith journey. We based what we drew in each square from

the story of Paul’s conversion found in Acts 9. The first picture we were to draw was of a crossroads in our life. Like

Paul, who heard Christ’s voice and was blinded by a light on the road to Damascus changing the direction of his life, we

too were to think of a time that brought change to our life. I drew a picture that represented my call to leave teaching

and go into ordained ministry. The second picture we were to draw was about a person or people who Christ used to

touch us, like Annas who touched Paul and healed his blindness. I drew a picture that represented my Aunt Shirley who

has supported me in living out my faith through her example of faithfulness and through her encouragement. The third

picture we were to draw was about how Christ has used us as instruments to help others, like Paul who proclaimed

Jesus everywhere he went. I drew a picture that represented a family I was able to help through a difficult time. The

fourth and last picture we were to draw was a hurdle that we have experienced as followers of Jesus Christ, like Paul

who Christ said must suffer for the faith. I drew a picture that represented the rejection I have experienced throughout

my life because I have chosen to follow what Jesus calls me to do and not what the world or others would want me to

do. We then shared each of these squares with a table partner as a way to practice telling our faith stories out loud.

The next activity we did was a neighborhood prayer walk. It was a sunny day so it was nice to be outside. We were to

think about a few questions: What do you notice? What makes you wonder? Where/how might God be active in this

place or circumstance? I noticed that there was a beautiful raised flower garden by an alley that someone must have

been caring for. I noticed that there were a number of people hanging out around the bus depot and I wondered where

they were going. I noticed there were three congregations downtown and thought God must be active in and through

their ministries. When we retuned from our walk, there were people who shared a variety of different things they no-

ticed. A neighborhood prayer walk is something we can do in our own neighborhoods, which can help us reflect on how

we see the world around us and can reach out to our neighbors, looking for ways we can join with them to do ministry.

Let us continue to grow in ways to share our faith, fulfilling our vision to be “an inclusive and engaged congregation

of disciples, transforming the lives in our community through the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

To Our

Conference &

Church Partners:

Thank you to all who supported our Ministry at the Pie & Ice

Cream Social in October. Your donations of pies and silent

auction items, cash donations as well as your time and tal-

ent volunteering to make this event a success is greatly

appreciated. Our gratitude to those of you who joined us for

an afternoon of great food and fellowship.

We would like to invite you to attend Advent worship ser-

vices at 11:30 am, Wednesdays, Dec 4, 11 and 18 fol-

lowed by a luncheon in Linwood Commons, 425 N. Linwood

garding the luncheons and asking our conference congre-

gations if they would like to support us by providing and/or

serving at one of the luncheons. While tasty food is impor-

tant, the true value of these gatherings is to allow all of us

an opportunity for Christian fellowship. Please contact Lynn

Good News / Bread for the World Sunday

Our letters made a difference! In April, Prince of Peace

members participated in Bread for the World’s annual

Offering of Letters. This year, when we wrote to our

Members of Congress, we specifically asked members of

the House of Representatives to co-sponsor House Reso-

lution 189. Both Rep. Mike Gallagher and Rep. Glen

Grothman have signed on as co-sponsors of the resolu-

tion! This is great news since the resolution lays impor-

tant groundwork for accelerating global progress against

maternal and child malnutrition.

Thanks, again, to all the PoP letter-writers!!

We will mark Bread for the World Sunday on November

10th, by looking at the interaction between hunger and

climate change with a study & discussion of an excerpt

from Bread’s 2019 Hunger Report:

BACK to BASICS: How to End Hunger by 2030.

Attend the Adult Ed session, Sunday, November 10,

from 9:00-9:40 in the Gathering Room.

(The session will be repeated 10:45-11:30. )

In the meantime, pick up a copy of the materials from

the Advocacy booth at the Ministry Fair on Nov. 3rd or

email [email protected] for an electronic

copy with “Climate Change & Hunger” in subject line.

CARE FOR GOD’S CREATION: CLIMATE CHANGE 101

Learning Opportunities – Adult Ed on Nov 10 & 17:

We have all heard much about climate change in the

news recently. It is an issue that is of growing concern in

our community, nation, and worldwide. As you hear this

news have you wondered what it really means, what

causes climate change and the evidence of it affecting

the earth and people, what does it mean for us here in

Wisconsin, and how are we to respond as Lutheran

Christians.

Come join for one or both of these two important discus-

sions:

November 10th (9:00 & 10:45) will feature the

“Bread for World 2019 Hunger Report – Chapter 4

on Climate Change.” (see previous column)

November 17th (starting at 10:45 AM) we’ll discuss

the ELCA publication “Care for God’s Creation: Cli-

mate Change 101”.

NEWLY COMMISSIONED HANDBELL MUSIC IN REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE WHO’VE GONE BEFORE US

On Sunday, November 3rd, Soli Deo Handbell Choir is pleased to debut a new arrangement for handbells, hand-chimes, and piano, commissioned in loving memory of our very own Jane Zima. Jane rang with Prince of Peace’s handbell choir for many, many years and actually played with the group just a few weeks before her passing in April of 2014. We were honored to play at her funeral. Several generous memorials from family and friends were placed in the Designated Giving/Handbells account in Jane’s name, and initially a portion was used to purchase badly needed table covers—the black and gold-trimmed

tailored cloths you see every time the bells ring. However, there remained a substantial amount of money so the decision was made to commission a new handbell arrangement. Sondra Joten, Soli Deo Director, contacted several composers and arrangers who she has met through her membership in Handbell Musicians of America. After a bit of discussion and discernment, it was decided that Dr. John Behnke would do the commission based on the hymn, “For All the Saints.” John completed the arrangement and sent it to us in August. We prepared to use it for this year’s All Saints Sunday worship once handbell rehearsals then began in September. Perhaps the best news yet is that the piece has recently been accepted for publication through GIA Publications, Inc. and will become available to handbell choirs to ring and share everywhere! What a fitting tribute to our wonderful saint, Jane!

POP PAGE-TURNERS BOOK CLUB The PoP Book Club meets in the library on

the third Thursday of the Month at 1:30 pm.

Our next meeting is November 21st.

Come and join us.

The November book is The Lace Makers Se-

cret by Kathleen Ernst.

Curator Chloe Ellefson needs distraction from the unset-

tling family secret she's just learned. It doesn't help that

her boyfriend, Roelke McKenna, has been troubled for

weeks and won't say why. Chloe hopes a consulting job

at Green Bay's Heritage Hill Historical Park, where an old

Belgian-American farmhouse is being restored, will be a

relaxing escape. Instead she discovers a body in a cen-

tury-old bake oven. Chloe's research suggests that a rare

and valuable piece of lace made its way to nearby Door

County, Wisconsin, with the earliest Belgian settlers.

More importantly, someone is desperate to find it. In-

spired by a courageous Belgian woman who survived

cholera, famine, and the Great Fire, Chloe must untangle

clues to reveal secrets old and new . . . before the killer

strikes again.

The December book is I Still Dream about You by Fannie

Flagg. In December we will be meeting a week earlier,

Thursday, December 12th at 11:30 am for lunch together

at the Weathervane at 186 Main St, Menasha. Please

call Karen Peckham to let her know you plan to attend

(920-734-7451). All are welcome!

GIFTS OF HOPE

NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT

What is GIFTS OF HOPE? We pro-

vide Christmas gift packages and

quilts to 30 under-served stu-

dents at Appleton East High

School. For those who are sen-

iors, we also provide a graduation

gift in the spring. This is our fifth

year of providing support to East

students. For many of these stu-

dents, this is the only gift they will

receive this Christmas.

Who decides which students will receive the

gifts? We work with staff at Appleton East

who identify which students need assis-

tance. Some of these kids are homeless,

some struggle in situations with parents that

are addicts or who for other reasons don’t

receive the help they need.

How can I help? You can choose how you

would like to help!

Take a tag from the wish list, purchase the

item on the tag and then return the item to

Cindy Romnek’s office. The wish list is lo-

cated on the Helping Hands/Witness minis-

try board in the narthex – look for it on the

wall between the sanctuary and the Congre-

gational Life Room!

Purchase gift cards from PoP or when you

are out and about – tags for needed gift

cards are also on the wish list. Take a

tag from the wish list board list and pur-

chase a gift card.

PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH 11

...& & OUTREACH

WAAAY back in September,

the first phase of Grace Ga-

rage began at Prince of

Peace as an opportunity for

our Redeemers (high school youth) to get together every

Sunday for discussions of faith, food and check in with

each other on a regular basis. We started with having

games and conversations, offering an opportunity to re-

connect after the summer. In October the next phase

rolled out, which was adding a Mechanic to our Sundays

– an adult member or members of Prince of Peace, who

are interested in getting to know our youth. Our Mechan-

ics lead a brief discussion or presentation of their choos-

ing – it can be a Bible study, a telling of their faith story,

an impactful moment in their faith, or something else

that they feel would be valuable to the youth of PoP. We

are always looking for new mechanics, and remember,

you can come once, or you can come back many times.

The mission of this is to build as many connections with

our youth, and to make their faith web strong and large.

A special thanks to our Mechanics in the month of Octo-

ber, Cindy Czarnik-Neimeyer and Mary and Chris Volk-

man. Please connect with Corrina Czarnik or Brigetta

Wingender if you have any questions or are interested in

being a Grace Garage Mechanic!!!

FAITH MENTORING –

NEW AND IMPROVED!!

Beginning in mid-November, our 9th

grade students will begin the process

of seeking out a member of Prince of

Peace to be their Faith Mentor as they take the final

steps towards affirming their Baptism on Confirmation

Sunday.

This year we will be doing Faith Mentoring a little differ-

ently than in years past, as it will begin in January. And

instead of meeting each week, Faith Mentors and Men-

tees (9th graders) will meet twice a month from January-

April. The reason we have made this adjustment is to

offer a longer period of time for the mentors and men-

tees to connect and get to know each other. We know

that it takes time to develop a relationship and we know

that offering a longer period to cultivate this friendship

will be beneficial to this phase of faith development for

our Confirmands, as well as to the Faith Mentor. If you

are approached by one of our youth, please prayerfully

consider the opportunity to be the light in the life of one

of our Confirmands’ final phase of their Confirmation

Journey! If you have any questions about the program,

please contact Brigetta Windgender, our 4th-12th Gr. FF

Coordinator.

SCRIP is sold between services on Sunday and the 1st

Wednesday of the month during..

OASIS services. We have all the cards you need for your

everyday shopping & gift giving needs including the usual

grocery cards and Kwik Trip cards benefitting our Youth.

Remember to bring your checkbook to church or contact

Sandy Weihing if you have need for cards other than the

dates posted.

IT’S ‘THANKSGLOVING’ TIME! We hate to say it, but that good ol’ Wisconsin blustery fall and wintery weather season is upon us, which means for those of us who have them, it’s time to start pulling out our hats, mittens/gloves and scarves. But for the homeless in our area, that’s not always so easily done! So let’s give them a hand…we will accept new or gently used men’s, women’s & children’s winter hats, mittens, gloves & scarves from now through November 17th for our an-nual “THANKSGLOVING” drive. (Please place donated items in the collection basket found in the Narthex.) Help us to ‘warmly’ reach out in love for another successful year! ~ Thank you in advance, Dan and the Social Concerns Ministry
