CEATEC JAPAN 2018

The exhibition comes to a successful conclusion with an increase in both exhibitor and registered visitor number.

CEATEC JAPAN, which celebrated its 19th anniversary this

year, announced its transformation from a consumer

electronics show to a comprehensive CPS/IoT exhibition, and

a driving force for social transformation, back in 2016.

Continued from last year as a global showcase for Japan’s

growth strategies and vision of the future known as Society

5.0, the theme for 2018 was “Connecting Society, Co-Creating

the Future” to go beyond the boundaries of the industry by

effectively integrating policies, industries and technologies.

The exhibition showcased and disseminated “the future that

will be realized with Society 5.0” where IoT, robots and AI will

all play important roles.

A total of 725 exhibitors (exhibitors from overseas: 206 from

19 countries; up 7 exhibitors from 2017) displayed their

technologies at 1,786 booths (1,758 in 2017, up 1.6%). The

number of visitors over the four-day period was 156,063

(152,066 in 2017, increasing by 3,977 or 2.6%), with an

average of 39,016 visitors per day representing the fifth

largest attendance in CEATEC JAPAN history. The number of

visitors from overseas reached 1,985 (1,844 in 2017). On

Monday, October 15th, the day before the exhibition opened,

a press conference was held explaining the outline of the

exhibition, followed by Media Convention. The Media

Convention gathered a total of 470 (473 in 2017) members of

the press both from Japan and overseas. CEATEC JAPAN

was covered by online and television news as well as in

newspapers on a daily basis by visiting journalists, which

reached 1,359 in total.

With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the world is seeing dramatic changes to the industrial structure, and there are growing expectations for accelerated technological innovation. In response, countries have been developing their own strategies, reflecting national issues. However, this

symposium brought together top business leaders from four industrialized countries to share ideas on the social challenges faced by each country, to discuss policies and solutions, and to propose new approaches transcending traditional barriers to co-create the future.

Global Symposium: Connecting Society, Co-Creating the FutureIndividual PresentationsPART.1

Japan and Japanese companies are very important partners for Germany, especially in this time of global political upheaval. In Germany over the last cou-ple of years, Industry 4.0 has become a trademark for the digital transforma-tion not just of industry but also for the economy and society. Japan’s Society 5.0 strategy is similar in many ways, but it includes much more of the impact of digitalization on society.

Currently, the most innovative step in German industry’s digital transformation

is the expansion of IoT technology. Big data utilization is important, but both Japan and Germany must solve issues relating to the gathering, sharing and protection of data. Current and future business models often rely on data, and as the free flow of this information be-comes ever more important, it is neces-sary to find the right balance between privacy concerns and the need to pro-cess data for business. The social issue in this accelerating digital transforma-tion is digital education.

Salesforce was established almost 20 years ago, by applying the convenience of cloud-based internet consumer ser-vices that had emerged at the time to CRM. Salesforce was founded on 3 key ideas, ie., a New Business Model, a New Technology Model with Cloud-Comput-ing and Multi-Tenancy, and the 1-1-1 model which is to give back 1% of its equity, 1% of its products and 1% of employee hours to the community. We are in the midst of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and while new technologies such as AI are being leveraged for in-

novation, there is a possibility that they can be mistakenly or intentionally mis-used. That is why Salesforce has set up the Office of Ethical and Humane use of Technology. Also, Salesforce has been working with the World Economic Forum, supporting the establishment of the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Rev-olution in San Francisco last year and Japan this July, and intends to contrib-ute to its activities as it expands globally to India and China, particularly in the area of CRM.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution has prompted companies around the world to develop initiatives that exploit these new technologies, particularly in man-ufacturing. Meanwhile, in Japan the emergence of a super-aging society is foregrounding various concerns – such as higher social security costs, a short-age of workers, a lack of people to re-place business owners, and shrinking regional economies. Measures utilizing digital technologies advanced by the Japanese Government aim at realizing Society 5.0, a new society that balances economic advances with the resolution of social issues. Nevertheless, the short-age of data scientists and other human resources is a major issue that requires

urgent attention. In addition to the ac-tivities of individual companies, the gov-ernment has established a system for certifying Fourth Industrial Revolution skills courses to provide opportunities for employees to acquire professional expertise and advance their careers. A stronger partnership is required be-tween universities and industry, but partnerships are not limited to Japan, as demonstrated by the establishment of the Japan-India Startup Hub in India, where there is a large pool of human resources with digital expertise. In the area of ventures and R&D, the J-Start-up Program has been launched to foster startups with global competitiveness.

The greatest power of the digital tech-nologies that enhance productivity and competitiveness is enabling people to reduce to zero the distance between vir-tual and real, between imagination and realization. And for this it is very import-ant to realize full-enterprise digital trans-formation. For large companies, there is a need to implement open innovation through collaboration with small- and medium-size enterprises (SMEs).

The goal of digital transformation is to bring about a better world – specifically, to realize new urban development for the benefit of its citizens, to implement energy reforms, and to provide better work. A major challenge that France is facing at present is the transformation of SMEs. The Industrie du futur strategy focuses on support for startup compa-nies. France also aims to reform work styles for the future.

As demonstrated by the presentations given in Part 1, each country has adopted a different approach but there are also points in common such as how to enjoy the benefits of social digitalization.

The first question put to the panelists, representing the four countries, was about how to evaluate the current state of progress of digital transformation. Responses from Germany and Japan were that the digitalization of SMEs is particularly difficult.

From the US came the advice that, in order to see success, it is important to have a clear idea of the end goal of adopting the new technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which in the case of Salesforce is the improvement of cus-tomer value. Regarding open innovation, in France compa-nies need to create a strong cooperative relationship with the supply chain while helping new businesses.

Young entrepreneurs are inventive and have a completely

different perspective from the large corpo-rations, and it was pointed out that large companies can learn from them while pro-viding assistance to startups.

Besides recogniz-ing the importance of big data and smart data, there was also discussion regarding the fact that it is data utilization, rather than data collection, that differs from country to country. And although AI, which is technology that utilizes that data, can have a considerable impact on all the ways in which business is conducted, the biggest problem facing the use of AI is hu-man resource development (HRD). In fact, this problem is not limited to AI: there is a shortage of trained workers in all fields of digital transformation.

It is still a challenging environment in which to utilize AI to promote business excellence and switch to new business models using big data. Responding to the issues relating to human resources in each country, the French representative explained the national HRD strategy, and the right ways to go about training. The representatives from Germany and Japan, countries which both have aging populations, discussed HRD methods in the engineering field. And the US representative discussed the need to train more data scientists to fill the jobs of the future.

Finally, the panelists gave advice to the Japanese business leaders who attended the panel discussion.

Global Symposium: Connecting Society, Co-Creating the Future

Discussion by Panelists from Various Countries.

Technologies related to AI and IoT are advancing, and industrial structures are being transformed on a global scale. Now, more than ever, it is important to engage in co-creation, transcending not only the barriers that separate industries but also those that separate nations. That is why it was so worthwhile to be able to share with our guest speakers – industrial leaders representing Germany, France and the United States – values and issues raised by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The German representative explained that the free flow of data is important and so a framework is needed to appropriately separate personal data from the rest. The French representative said that collaboration and development spaces are important to provide new opportunities not only for large companies but also SMEs. And from the United States came the opinion that order is necessary to make effective use of the emerging new technologies, pointing out the important role played in this respect by the World Economic Forum’s Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The Japanese representative stressed the need to foster human resources capable of conceptually linking the cyber and physical realms.

It is gratifying that such valuable ideas were shared, transcending national boundaries. The Japanese government will give them serious consideration and it is to be hoped that good use will be made of them in future discussions about policy and in deliberations with other governments.

Dr. Yoshiharu Inaba Chairman and CEO, Fanuc

Mr. Sadanobu Takemasu CEO, Lawson

Mr. Toru Nishikawa, CEO, Preferred Networks

Preferred Networks’ goal is to apply deep learning technologies to real life and develop the world of personal ro-bots. It all started when the company collaborate with Fanuc. Personal robots will become as ubiquitous as personal computers, and the process by which that happens is likely to mirror the adop-tion of computers in daily life. Personal computers now play a role in just about every field of human endeavor, whether for work or play, offering versatility and ease of use. One could say they have taken the place of all sorts of individu-al devices, and this is why they have

become so widespread so rapidly. It is believed that the key to widespread adoption of personal robots will similarly be versatility – that is, becoming indis-pensable in diverse environments. The Tidying-up Robot System, which the company has developed for CEATEC, has demonstrated how robots can work in everyday households. In the future, the company will be developing tools to enable anyone to freely participate in the development of new robots with multiple applications. Preferred Net-works wants to contribute to making ro-bots ubiquitous in society.

Retailers are currently facing fierce competition and Lawson’s CEO does not deny that the growth of convenience stores has paused, though the situation is favorable. That is because Lawson is currently challenging the status quo on all fronts. In order to ensure stores continue to be informed by the spirit of hospitality, yet without becoming totally reliant on digital devices as elsewhere, it is necessary to improve the value of stores using digitalization. Lawson’s corporate philosophy is Creating Happi-ness and Harmony in Our Communities. The role of the convenience store has

changed from being merely handy for the community to being an integral part of the community infrastructure. In fact, Lawson is aiming to become a lifestyle platform for the community. And for that, it needs digitalization. It is not just the digital transformation of cash registers; it is necessary to rethink everything from stocking to cleaning. Future Law-son stores will be spaces for consider-ate community communications, and the store owners will be at the center of that community. Everyone in agreement with this vision is invited to join with us and become game changers.

Fanuc is promoting the FIELD system in an alliance with Cisco, Rockwell Au-tomation, Preferred Networks, and NTT. Today, smart factories represent a ma-jor trend in the manufacturing business; however, this has given rise to a num-ber of issues involving connectivity and data status. The FIELD system, which is a means to generate the value of things, can resolve these issues in manufactur-ing. This system enables safe, auton-omous decentralized control of equip-ment, without latency, from the edge. It is a platform for realizing true smart fac-

tories, not by simply connecting things but by thinking and operating – an op-timized instrument for linking diverse equipment and manufacturing systems, making data visible, harnessing AI, and exercising control in real-time. In sev-eral years, it is expected that a consid-erable number of these systems will be operating in various types of manufac-turing as the company will start sales in the U.S. market in 2019. Together with more than 500 partner companies, Fa-nuc is fully committed to realizing smart factories.

LCI (La Chaîne Info) has been a 24/7 cable news channel that served more than 7.2 million households, and provided news programs to France and French-speaking countries. The company is a part of France’s largest broadcaster TF-1. In 2016, it became a public broadcaster of digital terrestrial television in France. With this advent, the company now serves more than 20 million households in France alone, and is making a steady growth by serving other French-speaking countries in Africa. Also, its programs can be enjoyed practically anywhere in the world with its alliance with Apple TV. A morning infotainment program called “LCI Matinale” that started in 2017 has covered CEATEC for the first time this year, including live coverage from Makuhari Messe. Normally, such live coverage is repeated every hour.
