Following meeting:
Sept. 12, 2017
NEW LOCATION:
Back 9 at the Stanley Golf
Course (formerly the
Whinstone Tavern)
CONNECTICUT SKI COUNCIL
skiclub.com May, 2017 [email protected]
AND SO … WE END A BANNER SKI YEAR!!
The 2016/2017 ski season was a BIG improvement
over last year, and the participation of our member-
ship shows it in the added ski days. I hope that
everyone took every opportunity to be out in the
great Winter outdoors with your friends and family.
We will be meeting for the last time this season on
May 9 at the Newington Polish Club. Remember
that in September, we will be moving back to the
newly-renovated clubhouse at the Stanley Golf
Course (formerly the “Whinstone Tavern”, now
called the “Back 9”.)
At the May meeting, unused vouchers MUST be
submitted to Nancy, Cheryl and Mark – vouchers
not returned that night will not be eligible for credit.
By that meeting, we will have chosen the location
for the 2018 On Snow weekend, to be held on
March 2, 3 and 4, 2018.
Also by that meeting, we will need all clubs to
submit their list of officers and their Council rep(s)
for 2017/2018, with their phone numbers and email
addresses. Also due are your current member
rosters. These MUST be received by Nancy Nolan
and/or me by May 31. The total membership of the
44 clubs is how we know how many CSC stickers to
order for next season.
We also hope to fill the Vice President’s position
that evening, as it has been vacated by Adela
Martinez’s move to Florida. If you are interested,
please let the Elections Committee know.
AS A RECAP TO THE PAST SEASON:
SKI VOUCHERS – Nancy Nolan, Cheryl Parmalee,
Mark Robitaille, and Ginny Ludwig once again
worked hard to take your pre-season discount ski
voucher program to the mountain resorts, gain the
best deal possible for us all, and handle the task of
collecting our money and distributing the vouchers.
Then they collected the unused vouchers
and worked to get the most credit possible
for them. We all benefit tremendously from
their efforts, and owe them our Thanks!
AWARENESS DAYS – John Filakovsky once
again gained us the additional benefit of
using our CSC stickers to provide an
additional way to get tremendous discounts.
John works with each of the mountain
resorts to ensure that virtually every single
day of the season has an Awareness Day for
us to take advantage of. Thank you John!
CSC SNOWBALL – Janice Cohen and Adela
Martinez and all the volunteers from 7
different clubs did a GREAT job in raising our
season opening awards presentation and
fundraiser to new heights. It is amazing to
me that all 44 clubs do not have attendees
at this annual event. It is a night of fun,
partying and a chance to mingle with
members from other clubs.
MONDAY NIGHT RACING – Eleven clubs
fielded racers this year and the camaraderie
on the slopes, the friendly competition, and
food and drink afterward were all good
reasons to spend cold Winter Mondays at
Mt. Southington. Much thanks and appre-
ciation to Rob Dexter and Pat Moore and to
all the club race captains. Mt. Laurel, led by
Scott Farrar and Neal Fisher, won for the
third straight time by a razor-thin margin!
Thanks again to Rob in his efforts at the
Senior Games. It would be great to see
more racers participating next season.
KIDS’ DAY – Dave England and Jenny Ebner
and their volunteers did a record job in
welcoming nearly one hundred kids to this
event in January at Mt. Southington. They
have announced their decision to “retire”
from this event, and I still await

VICE PRESIDENT NEEDED!
The CT Ski Council
Nominating Committee is
looking for candidates for the
position of Vice President.
This elected position will be a
two-year term. We would
like to conduct this special
election at the CSC meeting
in May. Candidates who are
interested should contact
one of the following
Nominating Committee
members:
Paul D’Attilio, 860-977-3632,
Kevin Cronin, 860-295-9204,
Neil Young, 860-829-2711,
Thank you.
President’s Message, continued
someone (or a group) to step forward to continue this event
in 2018. Thank You Dave and Jenny!
CSC NEWSLETTER – Ginny Ludwig once again did a superb job of
producing this document each month from September through
this issue. Her efforts are central to “getting the word out” about
what is going on in the Council. I hope that you are encouraging
your club’s members to use the newsletter to stay informed
about the CSC and the activities that are open to them all. We
love you, Ginny!
ON SNOW WEEKEND – In her swan song with the CSC, Adela
Martinez teamed with Dave Zuraw and the Danbury Ski Club to
deliver a wonderful March weekend of racing fun, partying and
dancing at Loon Mountain. A good time was had by all, and one
club had so much fun, they started partying on Friday night and
only stopped to party with all of the rest of us on Saturday night!
Congrats to Ron Kaprazewski and Newington Ski Club for winning
the overall competition! Thank You Dave and Adela – great job!
CSC WEBSITE – Bill Leuze has transformed out website in the past
year into one that is chock full of information about the goings on
of the CSC and information on our member clubs. Make sure that
your members are viewing the website to keep informed about
the activities of the Council. ALSO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR CLUB
WEBSITE IS UP TO DATE!! Bill has links to your club websites for
potential members to find you; your website may be the first
impression that they have of your club – make sure it is
impressive and up-to-date. Thank you, Bill!
CSC WINTER VACATION TRIP – There is a proposal for a CSC trip
idea. I have had it posted on the website as well as in this
newsletter and need your feedback about how or whether to
proceed. We will discuss this at the May meeting.
As you can see, a lot of work by a lot of dedicated people working
for you and your club’s members over the past season.
PLEASE take the time to get to know all of these programs; we
would love to see more people involved with the CSC, and to see
more clubs get more involved with CSC activities.
Have a great Summer, and every now and then – check out the
website! See you in September.
Jonathan

Ski Council Trip Proposal
Since a lot of CSC clubs try to run their own trips but are not
successful in signing up enough people, I would like to
propose the following. A&S Travel would run one big trip, to
be in place by May, 2018. If a club would like to join this trip,
it would enjoy the benefits extended to a group leader if they
sell a minimum number of seats. There would be no cash
outlay for the club.
The first year, the trip would be domestic (probably Tahoe or
Park City.) If successful, we would add an international trip to
the mix in 2019.
If your club has an interest in doing this, we will have a
meeting at the May CSC meeting and present a hard proposal
to all the group leaders from the clubs. Remember, there is no
risk to the clubs, and the group leader will receive any group
benefits that the individual destination allows, as long as the
club reaches the minimum threshold (which varies by
destination.)
Please email me by May 10 at [email protected], if
your club has an interest in doing this, or call me directly at
203-265-9293.
Thank you for your consideration,
Eric Ardolino
President, A&S Travel Center
Ambassador’s Angle
Hello, Everyone!
Mark your calendars - the CSC Snowball is November 18, 2017 at
the Windsor Marriott. This year’s theme is Shake It Up! and
we’re looking forward to a lot of fun and record attendance.
At our April CSC meeting, I presented a list of the 18 clubs
required to volunteer at the Snowball this year. Seven have
already committed to their assignments. They are: Grumman
(programs), Hamden (decorations), Pequot (Outstanding Member
Award), Sikorski (security), Ski Bears (decorations), Sterling
(security) and Talcott MT (Ambassador Day).
The remaining clubs are: Manchester, Mansfield Recreation, New
Britain, New Canaan, North Haven, Norwalk, Norwich, Nutmeg,
Old Saybrook, River Hills, Torrington, and Trumbull ski clubs.
According to our by-laws, each club must participate on a
Snowball committee at least once every three years.
Positions to be filled are: raffles, solicitations, and Snowball
advisor. Thank you very much for your commitment and
participation in making this year’s CSC Snowball a success. I look
forward to meeting you at the May 9 CSC meeting.

2017/2018 CSC Ambassador
STERLING SKI CLUB CELEBRATES ITS 80TH!
Sterling Ski Club, which is based in Stratford, CT, is
celebrating its 80th anniversary. To celebrate, the club is
holding a banquet on May 13, at the Costa Azzura
restaurant in Milford. We are asking all current and past
members and friends to join us and renew current and old
friendships and share memories. To purchase tickets,
please contact our corresponding secretary at
[email protected], or contact Cal Smith at
203-874-4307.
The ski club was started in 1937 by a small group of
enthusiastic skiers. Today, the club has approximately 500
members. It is the only club in North America that owns
two ski houses, located in Vermont.

Okemo Skiers and Riders Bring Home
NASTAR Medals
Okemo Mountain Resort sent a record 27 racers to
this year’s NASTAR national championships in
Steamboat Springs, CO. Okemo finished in fifth
place in individual events out of 76 participating
resorts.
Kudos to Pat Moore, who picked up his 11th national
championship in snowboard racing. One of his
grandsons, 5-year-old Lauchie, became the 4th racer
in history to win his age group in both skiing and
snowboarding (just like his grandpa!)
Rob Dexter took second in the 65-69 Platinum
division; Bob Morell took second in the 70-74 Gold
division; Mary Lou Morell seconded in the 65-69
Silver – all members of CSC clubs.
If I left anyone out – I apologize. Congratulations to
each of you.
