Last Sunday we embarked on a five-week Summer Eucharist-fest, meditating on John 6 – Jesus, the bread of life. What we are going to get during these five weekends is a survey of key Eucharistic types from the Old Testament in our First Reading, paired with each successive unit of John 6 in the Gospel. St. John Paul II in the Encyclical letter, “Ecclesia de Eucharistia” (Church from the Eucharistic) gives us a deeper understanding and reflection on how the Eucharistic is so vital to the life and mission of the Church: “The Church draws her life from the Eucharist. This truth does not simply express a daily experience of faith, but recapitulates the heart of the mystery of the Church. In a variety of ways she joyfully experiences the constant fulfillment of the promise: ‘Lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age’ (Mt 28:20), but in the Holy Eucharist, through the changing of bread and wine into the body and blood of the Lord, she rejoices in this presence with unique intensity…filling (us) with confident hope.” Venerable Fulton Sheen had this to say about the Holy Mass: “Hence the Mass is to us the crowning act of Christian worship. A pulpit in which the words of our Lord are repeated does not unite us to Him; a choir in which sweet sentiments are sung brings us no closer to His Cross than to His garments. A temple without an altar of sacrifice is non-existent among primitive peoples, and is meaningless among Christians. And so in the Catholic Church the altar, and not the pulpit or the choir or the organ, is the center of worship, for there is re-enacted the memorial of His Passion. Its value does not depend on him who says it, or on him who hears it; it depends on Him who is the One High Priest and Victim, Jesus Christ our Lord. With Him we are united, in spite of our nothingness; in a certain sense, we lose our individuality for the time being; we unite our intellect and our will, our heart and our soul, our body and our blood, so intimately with Christ, that the Heavenly Father sees not so much us with our imperfection, but rather sees us in Him, the Beloved Son in whom He is well pleased. The Mass is for that reason the greatest event in the history of mankind; the only Holy Act which keeps the wrath of God from a sinful world, because it holds the Cross between heaven and earth, thus renewing that decisive moment when our sad and tragic humanity journeyed suddenly forth to the fullness of supernatural life.” Venerable Fulton J. Sheen, “Calvary and the Mass”. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, quoting the Second Vatican Council, says that the Eucharist is the “source and summit of the Christian life” (CCC 1324). Dr. Pitre teaches that there are four key reasons why the Church refers to the Eucharist with this description. First, the Eucharist truly is Jesus. It is not just something, but someone. When we receive the Eucharist, we are not simply receiving a symbol or a reminder, we are actually receiving Jesus Christ himself – his body and blood given to us at the Last Supper. THE HOLY MASS: THE CROWNING ACT OFCHRISTIANWORSHIP

Dearest Brothers and Sisters,Summer greetings to you and your loved ones.

Last Sunday we embarked on a five-week SummerEucharist-fest, meditating on John 6 – Jesus, the bread oflife. What we are going to get during these five weekendsis a survey of key Eucharistic types from the OldTestament in our First Reading, paired with eachsuccessive unit of John 6 in the Gospel.

St. John Paul II in the Encyclical letter, “Ecclesia deEucharistia” (Church from the Eucharistic) gives us adeeper understanding and reflection on how theEucharistic is sovital to the life andmissionof theChurch:“The Church draws her life from the Eucharist. As the Vatican Council says, “The Most BlessedEucharist contains the entire spiritual boon of theChurch, that is, Christ himself, ourParish andLivingBread….”The expression that the Churchdraws her life from theEucharist is true, because theEucharist is Jesus and theChurch draws her life fromJesus.

Second, the Eucharist is aTrinitarian mystery. As theincarnate Son and the SecondPersonof theHolyTrinity, Jesusis eternally united with the Firstand the Third Persons of theHoly Trinity – God the Fatherand God the Holy Spirit.Through the sacrifice of theMass, Jesus gives us the gift ofhimself, and we are in turncalled to imitate Jesus, offeringourselves in union with the Son, to the Father, throughtheHoly Spirit, and in thisway to participate in the verylife and love of the Trinity.

Third, the Eucharist gives us a taste of heaven and theend of time. The opening paragraph of the Catechismsays that “God, infinitely perfect and blessed ofhimself, in a plan of sheer goodness freely created mantomake him share in his own blessed life” (CCC1).Weare made by God to return to him. He is our beginningand our end, “the Alpha and the Omega”, and the“Source and Summit” – our origin, our goal, and veryhighest point – of our entire lives…..The Eucharisthelps us reach our goal of eternal life in the divine loveof the Trinity by bringing us into a deeper union with

God in this life. TheMass is a participation in the life ofheave, which is the inner life of the Most Holy Trinity.Every time we receive the Eucharist we are incommunion with the life of heaven – God himself.

Fourth, the Eucharist is the sumand summary of our faith. Whatwe believe about the Eucharistshapes our entire worldview. Ifwe truly believe that theEucharist is what Jesus says it is– Body, Blood, Soul, andDivinity – then it shouldtransform our entire life.Without Jesus, none of us canreach heaven. Jesus in theEucharist fortifies us to grow inholiness and attain eternal life.we must return to the source toreach the summit. If theEucharist is truly the source andsummit of the Christian life, then the more we grow inunderstanding and partaking ofthis sacrament, the fuller our

Christinan life will be.

Our faith is born from and expressed in theology(speech about God). Theology, in turn, remains amatter of “faith seeking understanding,” as St.Anselm once defined it. What we believe, we try tounderstand further; when we understand further, webelieve more deeply. To grow in the faith means toengage in this cyclical process of seeking God.

Many blessings,

Rev. Maxy D’Costa, Pastor
