The Secret of Success

What does it take to succeed? The answer is “a whole lot of failure” and knowing how to fail.

Or as Thomas Edison, prolific American inventor is credited with saying: “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.”

And what happens if you're one of those people who has never failed? Never had to face disappointment and pick yourself up again?

The ability to bounce back from failure is the key point, which means that to succeed you must be able to fail and recover from failure. That also means you must be willing to take risks, listen to others, and admit where you could improve.

As individuals in an organization there will be times when work does not go as planned – a deployment that does not go as expected or a technology component does not work as it should.

So what to do? You could ……

• Focus on what the next step should be – a setback is not the end of the game, in fact even a significant setback is not the end of the game (though you might be tempted to believe so and admit defeat). Instead take a step back and try to look at it objectively and analyze the steps that led to this.

• After the analysis, learn the lesson and move on – why did things not work out as you expected? What can you learn from the experience? What have other people done differently that might work for you?

• As a team member encourage experimentation and discussion – Science itself has progressed on the principle of trial and error. Treatment of grave diseases did not happen overnight and in fact the medical field is always on a search-and-discover mode – which is why people are living longer today! So why should our organization be any different? While failure per se may not be encouraged, a culture of experimentation where trial and error is seen as positive, most certainly is.

And if failure results along the way, as it inevitably will, take Henry Ford’s advice: “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.”

20 September 2012 : Induction program - Certificate Course in Home Based Health Care

17 October 2012 : CME - Cardiology

17 October 2012 : CME - Sepsis

27 – 28 October 2012 : Live Workshop - Gynae Endoscopy

The 2012 Induction program conference on CHBCP: Certificate Course in Home Based Care, for its

fourth batch was organized to share the requirement of Home based Care for chronic patients, under the

chairmanship of Dr Ruby Bansal. Prof Bimla Kapoor, Dr Gulab Jha, Ms Reeta Devi and Ms Hema Pant

from IGNOU graced the occasion. Dr Vijay Agarwal, Dr Vinay Aggarwal and Dr TS Jain were also

(NGO representive Sewa Bharti), functional Heads of all departments, various consultants of the

hospital, students of the course and media personnel from Dainik Jagran, Amar Ujjala, Hindustan Times

and the Pioneer.

At the Opening ceremony, Dr Vijay Agarwal spoke of requirement of Home based Care for chronic

patients, giving examples of home health services.

Certificate Courses in home based care are conducted at Pushpanjali Crosslay Hospital which is of a

duration of 6 months with the flexibility to finish the course within two years. Certificates and study

material for the course are provided by IGNOU University. The objective of the course is to prepare a

workforce in the country with skills required to look after elderly and those suffering from chronic

progressive illness, or after discharge from tertiary care and to improve the quality of life for the patient

and family members. The program consists of 14 credits, in which 4 credits are for theory; and 10 credits

for skills related to healthcare. The medium of instruction are English and Hindi. The current batch of this

course has a strength of 36 students.

In this CME on CVP (Central Venous Pressure) Dr Narain Harisinghani discussed that central venous

pressure is measured by intensivist to guide the doctor about intravenous fluid administration. Through

this many medications which cannot be given by peripheral route are administered. It has a normal value

of 8-14 cm of water in healthy subjects. A normal method of insertion using Certodyne was demonstrated

and discussed in seminar and hands-on training was imparted to delegates.

Dr Amit Gupta spoke on ‘Sepsis - What’s new’ where he emphasized the therapeutic strategies in the

management of patients with severe sepsis including optimizing organ perfusion, control of source of

infection and support of organ dysfunction. In the recent advances, he spoke of the potent anti

inflammatory treatment approaches especially needed at the tissue level. He informed that drug

Ulinastatin emerges as a “rescue” therapeutic option in Sepsis. It not only inhibits inflammatory markers

but also promotes homeostasis and assists in immunomodulation to prevent SIRS progression to multiple

organ dysfunctions. The Indian study shows a statistically significant reduction in 28 day all-cause

mortality when compared to the control group. Results also revealed a statistically significant reduction

in hospital stay and duration of mechanical ventilation. It also reduced new onset organ failure suggesting

a trend towards efficacy. This drug will be especially useful in Indian scenario where ICU cost is a big

burden on resources of family.

The Department of Minimal Access Gynae Surgery (MAGS) in association with AOGD GOGS and DGF
