The Police have noticed a rise in cases of bicycle theft recently. Based on past incidents, bicycles not secured to fixtures or left unattended and/or unsecured along common corridors of HDB estates are usually targeted. Bicycle owners are advised to take the following preventive measures:

If you are keen to play a part in making your estate a safer place to live in, you can participate in the Citizens-On-Patrol (COP) initiative. Please contact your nearest Neighbourhood Police Centre to find out more about the COP initiative. We appeal to residents who spot any suspicious persons loitering around or tampering with parked bicycles to call the Police at ‘999’ or nearest Neighbourhood Police Centre.

Dear Residents,Greetings from the Editorial Team of Connect @ MOUNTBATTEN. This newsletter is YOUR

newsletter. It is put together with the sole purpose of connecting with all Mountbatten residents. Our team strives to uphold integrity in our reporting, provide accurate information and serve the interests

and needs of residents. Each publication will focus on a particular theme and in this inaugural issue, we have chosen the theme “AWARENESS”.

Mountbatten Constituency consists of four Resident’s Committees (RC) and four Neighbourhood Committees (NC). For those living in HDB estates, the notice board located at your void deck indicates which RC your block falls under. For the private estates however, it is trickier. Unless you have attended events or functions organised by your NC or have seen the promotional banners for events put up near your residential area, the only way to know is to check out the map in the centre fold.

We are certainly looking forward to bringing you interesting news in and around Mountbatten. We warmly welcome your inputs and suggestions for this newsletter. Drop us an email at [email protected].

A special event “All About Sweden” was held at Katong Community Centre on 20 October 2011. The Guest-of-Honour was Swedish Ambassador H.E. Ingemar Dolfe. He was hosted by Mr. Lim Biow Chuan, Adviser to Mountbatten Grassroots Organisations.

“All About Sweden” is part of the World Culture Series launched by the People’s Association. The highlight was when H.E. Ingemar Dolfe shared tips on two Swedish dishes with the 150 guests.

“Arts and culture have always served as important platforms for people to interact and bond. It is a simple yet innovative way for people to connect. A vibrant and resilient community is about interaction, mutual trust and understanding. It is about knowing your neighbours, looking out for and helping one another,” said Mr. Lim when he addressed guests including leaders from MCSTs of condominiums located within Mountbatten in his speech. The evening saw new friendships and ties cemented.

For four months beginning September 2011, Lions Club of Singapore Fullerton partnered Mountbatten CCMC to provide food rations generously donated by individuals and organisations to needy residents of Mountbatten Constituency.

Such partnerships between the CCMC and Voluntary Welfare Ogranisations serve to underscore the ethos of Mountbatten CCMC which is to seek out new and meaningful partnerships with corporates and like-minded organisations for the benefit of residents.

AMbER EStAtEFollowing feedback from residents that turning into Mountbatten Road from Tanjong Katong Rd South occasionally required more than two changes of the traffic lights, Adviser Mr. Lim Biow Chuan held several rounds of discussion with LTA and Amber NC’s grassroots leaders. LTA then conducted a traffic impact study and eventually introduced an additional right turning lane to allow more cars to make the turn, greatly reducing the waiting time needed to clear this junction. The improvement work was completed on 16 August 2011.

with prams to better cross the road with ease.

tAnJong KAtong EStAtE1. Cross junctions within the estate have been continually plagued by accidents and as such, in early 2011, Adviser

Mr. Lim Biow Chuan initiated the formation of a traffic taskforce comprising grassroots leaders, residents and LTA to look into ways to make the estate safer for residents. Following a three-month review, the following measures were put in place:

2. For more than five years, the open field next to Haig Court was surrounded by a rusty old fence and inaccessible to public. Thanks to residents of Haig Court who made a request to Adviser Mr. Lim Biow Chuan, during a dialogue session held in September 2011, this field will soon be ready for community use. The old high fence has been removed and for safety reasons, a low fence will be erected along Haig Road.

• Introduction of “STOP” marking at junctions• Relocation of existing / addition of humps nearer the junctions • Shifting of existing stop line earlier• Chevron markings to narrow the width of the carriageway and to alert motorists of the impending junction• Painting of road kerbs in black and white• Dragon teeth markings to alert motorists to the approaching junction

2. The conversion of Jalan Lima Road to a partial two-way street in January 2012 was the result of grassroots leaders’ feedback on the illegal U-turns being made at this junction. Grassroots Adviser, Mr. Lim Biow Chuan, worked closely with LTA and grassroots leaders to effect a change that allows motorists to turn into Jalan Lima from Old Airport Road, providing greater access to the driveway and taxi stand at Mountbatten MRT Station. (Refer to photo)

2. In addition, the walk to East Coast Park via the Katong Park underpass is now more pleasant – a covered ramp and shelter have been added to the underpass entrances and a granolithic finish has replaced the worn tiles. The underpass near Makena will be similarly upgraded soon. (Refer to photos)

On 26 December last year, residents gathered in the multi-purpose hall of Mountbatten CC in a Christmas celebration jointly organised by Mountbatten CCMC, YEC and Old Airport RC. Participants of the party included children from TOUCH Young Arrows as well as members of the Singapore Association for the Deaf. Mr. Chew Siong Hee, PBM, Mountbatten CCMC’s Chairman, highlighted in his speech that the aim of the party was to “bring joy and laughter to the residents”. The Guest-of-Honour for the event was Adviser Mr. Lim Biow Chuan. Stalls, such as a lucky draw counter, a balloon sculpting booth and a popcorn stand were set up. The festive party ended with the singing of carols and a lucky draw where twenty lucky individuals won themselves a shopping voucher each.

In celebration of our nation’s 46th birthday, 1,000 passionate youths gathered on 6 August 2011 to set a new record in the Singapore Book of Records - the largest national flag made of bows. This inaugural event was organised by Mountbatten CC YEC and supported by Dunman High School, Lee Foundation and South East Community Development Council. The bow hairclips, which were then sold, raised a total of $2,000 which were donated to needy students. Mr. Iswandie, Chairman of Mountbatten YEC, said, “I am very heartened to see so many passionate youths coming together for a common cause and it motivates me to want to do even more for the community. Youth for Youth, Youth for the Community!”

Mountbatten Community Emergency & Engagement Committee (C2E) was officially formed on 1 November 2009. Mountbatten C2E won the Community Engagement Programme (CEP) Unity Award in March 2011.

On 18 June 2011, C2E organised a tour to SCDF 2nd Division Open House for Mountbatten residents. Residents attended a one-day CEPP training workshop from 9.00am to 5.30pm. They were trained in basic first-aid, fire-fighting, AED, CPR and chemical threat & evacuation during this workshop.

Held at Mountbattern CC, the weekly Walk-A-Jog session aims to promote bonding among residents and family members of all ages and races. Besides the Walk-A-Jog sessions, CSC members get to enjoy the benefit of two outings per year, a sumptuous meal and a night of fun at the annual Champions Night.

Said Mr. Yong Yuen Cheng, Chairman of CSC, “We are happy to see strong support for our events from residents. Our events are family-oriented and organised with our residents’ needs in mind. Through these events, we hope to encourage more residents to adopt an active and healthy lifestyle together with their family members and neighbours.“

26 November 2011 was a bright and sunny Saturday which sawsenior citizens and their families streaming in from all estates ofthe Mountbatten constituency to attend the Live Well with the Artsevent, organised by the Mountbatten Active Ageing Committeeat the Goodman Arts Centre. They participated in the myriadof Art workshops which included lantern making, Batik andChinese ink paintings as well as ceramic leaf plate making.

Health Qigong is a form of exercise that involves physical activity of the mind and body. Tanjong Katong NC has set up an interest group within its neighbourhood to engage residents to come together at Geylang Park Connector. The activity commences at 8pm every Tuesday, with participants coming from Lyndhurst Road, Goodman Road, Crescent Road, Cranbourne Road and Poole Road.

Four sets of movements are taught in 4 separate sessions. They are Yi Jin Jing (易筋经), Wu Qin Xi (五禽戏), Liu Zi Jue (六字诀) and Ba Duan Jin (八段锦).

For Mr. Kwok Ngam Seng, 78 years old, the annual event is something he looks forward to. Now into its sixth year, the number of recipients has increased steadily over the years. This year, 108 recipients received a goodie bag and Hong Bao each in a simple ceremony held at Blk 51 Old Airport Road on 10 January.

“We started this project in 2006 in conjunction with Labour Day. We wanted to do something meaningful for the ComCare recipients while the rest of the nation commemorates Labour Day. Since then, with the generous contributions from our working partners, we are able to organise it three to four times a year - certainly a bonus for our residents,” explained Adviser Mr. Lim Biow Chuan.

Tanjong Rhu Neighbourhood Committee (TRNC) organised a ‘Get to Know You’ event on 27 November 2011 at the rooftop of Tanjong Ria Condominium from 6.30pm to 9pm. TRNC members met with residents to share information and experiences of living in Tanjong Rhu estate. The event was well attended by chairpersons and their spouses/partners of the various Tanjong Rhu condominiums’ MCSTs. We had executive representations from agencies such as NEA, NParks and LTA. Adviser Mr. Lim Biow Chuan and Mr. Lim Teck Yin, CEO of Singapore Sports Council were also present.
