Bible Studies at Our Redeemer—
Weekly Walk in God’s Word— This study led by Pastor Mark meets in the Conference Room from 10:00 – 11:30 am each Thursday for an
informal in-depth study of God’s Word. They delve deep into Scripture to learn about context, authorship and proper interpretation methods.
All of this is accomplished while having a great time. Each class focuses on only one chapter of Scripture. This enables people of any Bible knowledge level to be right at home in this class, whether a novice or someone who has studied the Bible for years. The group is currently in the midst of a study of Leviticus.
They have met on a limited schedule over the summer. Their first meeting in August will be on the 18th. From that time forward, they will resume weekly classes. New members are always welcome.
Our Redeemer’s Women’s Guild, Tuesday Morning Women’s Bible Study & Friday Morning Men’s Bible Study are on break until September.
Tuesday Morning Women’s Bible Study This weekly women’s Bible study meets each Tuesday throughout the school year from 9 – 11 am in the
Youth Room downstairs. They will resume their school year schedule after Labor Day, continuing their study of Psalms. All women are invited to attend. Contact Nancy Wollmuth with any questions.
Women's Guild Our Redeemer’s Women’s Guild is a study and service group that offers a unique opportunity to share
friendship, good food and service to our church and its outreach in the community. The Guild’s first meetings this fall will be September 21 and October 19. Their usual schedule is to start
with a Bible Study, followed by a business meeting and salad luncheon. Those attending should bring a Bible, completed questions, and a topping or two to add to salad greens.
Guild Bible studies are led by Elizabeth Lewis, and study outlines are available from her in advance of each meeting. A coin offering will be taken each month for the Oregon LWML. Mite boxes for this purpose are available from Elizabeth.
Contact Shirley Olin or Elizabeth Lewis to learn more about this group or its monthly meetings.
Men’s Morning Bible Study
This men’s Bible study group meets in the conference room at 6:30 am each Friday during the school year. The group plans to resume weekly meetings on September 9, continuing a study of 2 Peter.
All men are welcome. Bring your Bible. Coffee is provided.
The Our Redeemer Trustees are pleased to award TWO students a total of $1,500 in scholarships for the 2016-2017 school year. We pray that the amount awarded will be a blessing to the students and their families as they continue their Christian educational paths.
Our Redeemer’s Scholarship Endowment Trust was created to encourage Our Redeemer families and assist them in their pursuit of a Christian education. The idea was to use these monies to assist students of any age within our church family.
Currently, the Scholarship Endowment has a balance of about $35,000. However, there has not been a successful
fundraiser for several years, and it has been necessary to use some of the fund’s capital for recent awards.
Because of this, the fund’s Trustees have made a decision to suspend activities for the Scholarship Endowment for the coming 2017-18 school year – no fundraising plans, no awards to be granted. Their hope is that during this time, emphasis will stay focused on Our Redeemer’s General Fund finances. The Trustees plan to meet in May of 2017 to re-evaluate plans for the Scholarship Endowment.

Stewardship: I t ’s a Matter of Fai th and Teamwork
Faith Empowers God’s Stewards
The writer of Hebrews defines faith: “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1).
Faith enables us to be God-pleasing stewards. “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6).
Through faith, we understand that our stewardship is God working in and through us. It is not what we do, not what we give, not how we serve – but what God does, what God gives, how God serves, and our response to His love and gifts to us.
God has shown us His plan for our lives. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). This is the definition of stewardship: doing the good works which God has prepared for us to do.
God empowers and equips us to be faithful stewards. God has chosen us to carry out His work on earth. “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last” (John 15:16).
It is through faith that our pastor confidently enters the pulpit to speak forth the Word of the Lord. It is God’s message, God’s gift, and he is only the channel through which it flows. Through faith, the servant humbly steps forward to serve. His only motive is that God may receive the glory as he offers his hands, feet, lips, his whole body, soul, and mind in service. Through faith, the teacher diligently prepares her lessons, seeking the leading of the Holy Spirit, studying the Word of God, and looking into the hearts of her students.
God creates the learning; His Spirit creates the faith. As stewards, we are the faithful vessels that God uses. Through faith, God can make us into His faithful stewards.
Working Together to Accomplish More
“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” (1 Corinthians 12:27).
To build and edify His Church, God gives each believer at least one spiritual gift. In 1 Corinthians 12:4-6, Paul wrote “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.” We are limited in what we can do as individuals, but, working together, we can accomplish great things.
In verses 7-11 we read, “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and He gives them to each one, just as He determines.”
In essence, we are one body made up of many parts. In his letter to the church in Corinth, Paul refers to the human body which is made up of many important parts. The eyes, ears, hands, legs, and arms work together, each performing its necessary role in the body. All are essential and necessary to form one body.
In an entirely different way of illustrating the importance of individuals working together to carry out the Lord’s work, consider how cranes are used at construction sites to lift tremendous loads with cables that are no bigger than garden hoses. The cable has so much strength because it is made up of individual strands. These strands are twisted together giving it incredible strength. In the same way, God gives His Church incredible ability because He binds us all together, combining our individual spiritual gifts with the gifts of others.

Our Redeemer Rummage Sale
Saturday, August 20
Rummage sale. Garage sale. Yard sale. They all work on the same principle. Offer for sale items that you no longer need in an effort to clean out some junk and raise a little money.
Once again, Our Redeemer is planning to hold a no-fuss venture into this arena and there are THREE ways that you can participate –
1. Clean out your closets, garage, etc. and donate your unneeded rummage to our sale (ask in the office if you’d like a Goodwill-style tax receipt). Donated items may be brought to church anytime up to the day of the sale and left in or near the Youth room downstairs.
2. Volunteer to help with the sale. Help will be needed in advance of the sale to sort and organize the rummage and day-of to help run the sale and clean up the remains. Please speak with Pastor Mark if you are available to help.
3. Come to our sale and shop. As the song goes – “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. You never know what you may find.
Proceeds from this year’s sale will be used to purchase new accessory play equipment for our playground.
Play Ball …
Hillsboro Hops Game Sat., August 27 at 5:03 pm
We have reserved a block of bleacher seats for the August 27 Hops vs. Boise game, and are planning for a fun evening out among friends from Our Redeemer.
If you reserved tickets for your family through the email inquiry earlier this summer, your seats are confirmed. Payment for the tickets ($11 each) can be slipped under the Ministry Coordinator door or given to Laurie O’Brien any time before the outing.
If you didn’t reserve tickets but would like to join in the fun, we have a few extra tickets. Contact Laurie in the office to add your name to the list.
Tickets will be distributed prior to the game.
The Hops play at Ron Tonkin
Field which is located at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex - 4460 NW 229th Avenue, Hillsboro.
The Hops provide a free shuttle for fans who take the Max to the Orenco Station Max stop. Fans must show their valid Max ticket. The shuttle picks up in the bus loop located next to the platform. Look for the "Hop On" sign. Shuttle Schedule for 5:03 pm games: 3-5:30 pm and 7-9 pm.
Stadium gates open 1 hour prior to game time.
Join us as we celebrate at our annual family picnic on Sunday, September 11. We have a lot to celebrate – the end of a summer filled with adventures and travel, a return to the traditions and routines of fall, and the fellowship and friendship of our church family.
The fun will begin following late service at about 12:15 pm under the shade canopies alongside the playground. Throughout the afternoon we will have games and activities for all ages – including a bounce house, water balloon volleyball and bingo.
For the picnic, we will have pulled pork. (Thank you John Bartizal.) Members are asked to bring a salad/side dish (last names G-Z) or dessert (last names A-F) to share for the potluck. Drinks will be provided.
Sigrid Rule is coordinating plans for this year’s picnic, but, as always, many volunteers are needed to help pull everything together. - Volunteers are needed
before and after the event to set up and take down tables & chairs.
- Volunteers are needed to help plan and run the activities and games.
- We would like to borrow ice chests to store drinks and pop-up canopies to provide more shade.
If you can help with any of these items, please sign up on one of the sheets under the hallway slatwall or speak with Sigrid.

Sock & Underwear Drive for the Portland Transitional School
A Chance to Help—from Head to Toe
Our annual Sock and Underwear Drive for the students at the Portland Transitional School will be coming again in September.
The Portland Transitional School serves homeless children in the Portland area – providing them with an education and a warm, safe place to preserve a sense of normalcy in at least part of their lives. The school operates a clothes closet, and our Sock and Underwear Drive helps build up their stock of clothing basics for these students.
As you prepare your students for their return to school, consider making an extra purchase or two for these deserving students. Purchases of new underwear, socks, bras or camisoles will bring smiles when delivered to this school. ALL SIZES ARE NEEDED!
Gently used children’s clothing will also be gratefully accepted by the school, and may be placed in the baskets under the hallway mailboxes.
The drive will get underway on September 11 and donation boxes will be out in the upstairs church hallway through the end of September. Until then, keep this upcoming project in mind. Thank you for continuing to support this valuable mission.

Member Milestones & Concerns
Ca r i ng f o r and Ce l e b r a t i ng w i t h Ou r Fam i l y
Our Church is built of people, each one an essential component of our structure and the ministry we seek to accomplish.
One important aspect of our ministry is caring for one another, and, in this light, it is important that we care for and stay in touch with all of our members. This includes those unable to attend church regularly because of health limitations, those currently serving in the U.S. military who may be stationed in other parts of the country or abroad, and those celebrating notable birthdays.
To support these members and let them know that they are a vital part of our church family, we include their names in our newsletter with a gentle request for all to remember them in prayer and/or reach out to connect with a phone call or card. Please don’t wait for an invitation to make contact, or expect that others have this covered. A small action on your part can bring a blessing to someone else’s day. Please call the church office if you need contact information.
This month – Our loving thoughts and prayers of
support for the health challenges that they face go out to:
Kay Grimm Audrey Harbolt
Ilo Stammer Jackie Watkins Joan Witthans
Jeanne Robertson has recently moved out of our area, settling in La Pine, Oregon, to be with her daughter. If you would like updated contact information for Jeanne, please get in touch with the church office.
Our thoughts of gratitude and prayers for continued safety go out to those who are currently serving in the U.S. military, including: Jacob Harbolt and Carrie Martin Smith.
August 2016
Attending: Matt Johnson, Brian Amberg, Todd Reitmeier, Colleen Elings, Pastor Mark, Ken Gullberg, Erin Eberlein, Dave Hardman, Rita Tornblad, Laurie O’Brien Absent: Bob Peters, Sigrid Rule, Darlene Thauland The meeting was called to order at 7:03 pm and Pastor Mark opened with prayer. The date for the next BOD meeting was tentatively set for Tuesday, July 26, 2016, due to conflict with VBS on July 12. Reports
1. Parochial Report & Youth Ministries. Pastor Mark shared that he asked his Idaho trip youth to come together at Friday Night Live for fellowship prior to the summer trip. May was a busy month, with a lot of pastoral care activity. Pastor will be asking the Board of Elders to consider releasing a group of people from membership who have not attended worship in three years. Pastor Mark is planning a worship service (which Our Redeemer will be hosting) for the district teachers’ conference in Seaside, OR. Confirmation class has concluded for the school year and was a success.
2. 2. Treasurer’s Report. Bob Peters’ report showed that May finances reflect a shortfall of $10,349. General Fund expenses for April were $32,430. General Fund offerings/income for the month was $22,080. Building Fund offerings/interest for the month was $667. General Fund checking account balance at the end of the month was $3,665 and the ending Accounts Payable balance is $0. Borrowings from the savings account increased by $10,000 raising the total borrowed to $89,000. This was due to paying off Joel’s payroll through June 30. Having done this, we may not have to borrow in June or July. The total balance in the Building Fund Accounts is $314,557.
3. Board of Elder’s Report. Matt Johnson shared that getting together has been challenging, so the Board of Elders has combined several recent meetings. The Board reviewed and approved the decision from the Children’s Ministry Board for Vacation Bible School to be moved to the evening time slot. The Board of Elders is reviewing records of those members who have not attended worship in three years and BOE will decide on what next steps to take.
4. Board of Properties Report. Bob Peters’ report reflected that the lighting upgrade project has been completed, painting of the annex is planned for this summer, and the next work day is scheduled for Saturday, June 25.
5. Upcoming Ministries Events. Don Stubblefield was absent, so nothing to report.
6. School Report. Brian Amberg shared that another successful school year is over. They are already gearing up for school year 2016-17 with full enrollment in all classes. The auction was a success and raised over $12,000. The patio beautification project has been completed. Special thanks to the family of Marian Heinrich for donating funds, the fabulous palm and help with planting. An inviting spot has been created to encourage people to sit a while and visit.
7. Stewardship. As Sigrid Rule was absent, nothing to report.
Unfinished Business
1. Office Staff –Susan Stubblefield has joined ORLC as the Ministry Assistant and has committed to this position at least through the summer. Barbara Pederson has officially retired, but has stated she would be happy to substitute when needed. We will acknowledge her service as part of the July 3 Sunday service, when we thank all
Church Leadership & Board News Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Board of Directors’ Meeting—June 14, 2016
members whose service positions have come to an end this year.
2. Church Picnic – Picnic is scheduled for September 11, 2016, and Sigrid Rule has agreed to solicit ideas and volunteers for the event. Bingo, a Bounce House, and other activities will be planned.
New Business
1. Scholarship Committee – This committee awarded two students with a $1,500 scholarship for the 2016/2017 school year. Scholarship awards come from an endowment fund. Unfortunately, we have not had a successful fundraiser for the Scholarship Endowment in three years, and the Trustees feel it is not in our best interest to raise money for the scholarship fund at this time, but instead encourage all giving to be directed towards the General Fund. As such, the Scholarship Trustees are recommending to the Board that we suspend activities for the coming 2017/2018 school year. The Scholarship Committee will reconvene in May 2017 to evaluate our situation, and whether to re-initiate activities.
2. Forest Hills Lutheran School Association Membership - A suggestion was made at the May VA for the BOD to nominate a subcommittee to review this $5,550 annual membership further and report back to the congregation at the November VA meeting, as to whether or not we should continue to be a member of the Forest Hills School Association.
Pastor closed the meeting with prayer at 7:47 pm. Respectfully submitted, Colleen Elings Secretary, Board of Directors

Bethesda Home Heroes: Seeking Volunteers
Bethesda, a Christian organization that provides homes and other services to people with developmental disabilities, is launching Home Heroes, a volunteer program. The goal of the program is to welcome volunteers into Bethesda homes to build friendships and connections with the people they support.
There are many benefits you may experience from volunteering: · Share a hobby or interest. Meet a new friend with similar interests and
give them a meaningful experience they wouldn’t have otherwise. · Feel good about yourself. Make someone’s day and provide
experiences they may cherish. · Share your faith. Talk about Jesus, read the Bible, do devotions and
pray with someone with a developmental disability.
All volunteers will receive a background check and training prior to being welcomed into Bethesda homes. To learn more, go to www.BethesdaVolunteer.org/
jointheheroes, or call 920-262-6515.
