JoeB.wasborninDurham,N.C.onOctober6,1967,andmovedtoCharlottejustpriorto1stgrade.HeattendedEastoverElementarySchool(whereSardis’ownMaidaFryetaughthiminthe5thgrade).JoeB.graduatedfromWestCharlotteHighSchoolin1985.HeattendedDavidsonCollege,wherehegraduatedin1989withaBachelorofArtsdegreeinhistory.Answeringacalltotheministry,andfollowinginthefootstepsofhisgrandfatherwhowasaPresbyterianminister,JoeB.enrolledinUnionTheologicalSeminaryinRichmond,Virginia.JoeB.graduatedwithtwodegrees:aMasterofDivinityandaMasterinChristianEducation.In2012,JoeB.obtainedhisDoctorofMinistrydegree.Hefocusedhisstudyonthespiritualgrowthanddecision-makingprocesswithincongregationalleadership.
WhileatseminaryJoeB.metJodiBond,whowasthenpursuingadegreeinChristianEducationandhassincebeenordainedasaministeraftergraduatingfromColumbiaTheologicalSeminaryin2002.Thetwomarriedin1993andhavetwosons.JosephisasenioratDavidson.BenjaminisafreshmanatAppalachianStateUniversity.TheMartinsalsohavealabradoodledognamedGeorge.TheMartinsenjoytravelingasafamily,andJoeB.enjoysplayingbasketballandgolf.
