RABBI ELIGBERG LEADSThe Art of Public Prayer

BT ADULT EDUCATION

Forme, any discussion ofprayer evokes the words of ourteacher, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, ofblessed mem-ory. Heschel in his writing is able to capture both the mys-tery and the difficulty ofprayer. Heschel states that: "Topray is to regain a sense of the mystery that animates allbeings, the divine margin in all attainments. Prayer is ourhumble answer to the inconceivable surprise of living. It isall we can offer in return for the mystery by which welive." (1) The quotes on prayer are primarily from Quest forGod: Studies in Prayers and Symbolism by Rabbi AbrahamJoshua Heschel, chapters one and two.

For Heschel, the source ofprayer stems from oursense of awe and wonder at reality. Achieving this in isola-tion is not always easy. Often, by placing ourselves in theproper setting for worship, by surrounding ourselves withothers who are reaching out to the source of holiness in ourmidst, we can find ourselves moving along a path into thepresence ofGod.

To pray then is rooted in our desire to be broughtto God's attention; to be listened to and understood; to real-ize that we are a divine concern. Prayer offers the opportu-nity to reaffirm that beyond the maelstrom of reality, theHoly One cares about what happens in our lives; that Godwalks with us on our journey.

Let us reflect with Rabbi Heschel on what impactprayer can have in our lives and our community.

"Prayer clarifies our hopes and intentions.""Prayer teaches us what to aspire to.""Prayer is a way to master what is inferior in us, to

discern between the signal and the trivial, between the futileand the significant ...."

"Prayermakes visible the right and reveals what ishampering and false."

"Prayer is an invitation to God to intervene in ourlives. . . "

"To pray is to dream in league with God, to envi-sion His holy visions."

"Worship is a way of seeing the world in the lightofGod."

"Prayer takes the mind out of the narrowness ofself-interest, and enables us to see the world in the mirror ofthe holy."

"To pray means to bring God back into theworld. . .To pray means to expand [God's] presence."

"Prayer is an answer to God: "Here am I."

May this be our answer to the Holy One calling out to usand may we find ourselves, fellow travelers along the path-ways ofprayer.

With blessings,Rabbi David M. Eligberg

OUR HAZZAN’S VOICEChag Purim

It’s Purim let’s get excited! We at Congregation B’nai Tikvahtake our holidays very seriously. We are always looking for anew and better way to make our celebrations enjoyable, mean-ingful and memorable. As in other years Purim will be cele—

brated with multiple activities for all ages. The annual carni-val is always a blast. The nursery school will have a specialcostume parade. Our religious school will celebrate with livemusic supplied by my favorite musical group, The Sons ofTikvah Band. The band will also enhance the reading ofme-gilla on Purim, playing classic Purim songs and other favor-ites, retelling the classic story ofEsther and Mordechai. Thefestivities promise to bring joy to all boys and girls, womenand men!

«W‘H‘H‘Hvxm

wrrrrrrrrrmIn addition to all this fun, the depth and significance ofPurimis kept in perspective when we participate in the act ofgivingmishloah manot. Annually our sisterhood sponsors this gift-giving program with the gifi baskets that they prepared anddistributed.

Every person must send two portions to at least oneperson, as it is written: "And sending portions to one another",that is, two portions to one person. Praiseworthy is the personwho sends portions to many people. However, it is better tosend many presents to the poor than to eat big meals or sendmany portions to friends, because there is no greater joy beforeGod than when we gladden the hearts of the poor, the orphansand the widows and make them happy.

Because of the wonderful memories that this holidayevokes, Purim is one of three holidays each year that are thehappiest days of the year. Growing up these were 3 holidaysthat really mattered to me. SimchatTorah, Hanukkah, andPurim. The Hanukkah presents and latkes made this holidayspecial for kids. Simchat Torah was always a blast in shul. The rabbi and cantor would let their hair down; we all dancedaround the sanctuary with the Torahs, kids waving their home—made paper flags. All the kids were called up to the bima forour annual special aliyah. The jelly apples were so good. There was so much energy!

Purim, the holiday that we’re about to celebrate wasloads of fun too. We were encouraged to make lots ofnoisewith our groggers as we listened for the villain Hamen’s nameduring the reading of the Megilla, the book ofEsther. And theHamantoshen are so delicious!

Obviously all of these pleasurable holidays are moresignificant than special fried foods pastry and candy. Surelythough, they are a good start. And obviously help us encourageour children to remember. The joy that we can recall from ouryouth helps to perpetuate our rich tradition.

Once again, we celebrate Purim with pride, recallinghow our people overcame adversity and not only thrived butalso prospered in the face ofgreat danger. We learn howEsther and Mordechai took great risks to save the Jewish peo-ple in Persia. They are an example to us and we now celebratetheir achievements with great joy but also we give thanks byfulfilling the mitzvah helping people less fortunate than our-selves.

By remembering this wonderful holiday, and keepingit at the forefront by joining in all the activities ofPurim, wewill create even more significant memories for our childrenand us.

Worship theLord in gladness; come before God with joyoussong.

B ’simcha, with Joy!Cantor Bruce Rockman

EXPANSION UPDATEFrom Mitch Frumkin, President

So what do you see when you look at the two pictures on this page? What I seeis a few wooden stakes which represent the building corners of our upcomingexpansion!

While thelast 10% of the ap-proval process istaking longer thanthe other 90%, weare finally beginningto see the light at theend of the tunnel.Believe it or not, theeasiest part of anyproject of this type isthe constructionwhich we anticipatewill begin in May.

Just lastweek a meeting tookplace at the offices ofthe Department ofEnvironmental Protection in Trenton to present the proposed lo-cation of the expansion relative to the previously approved wetlands line. Basedupon this meeting, it appears that all questions have been answered and all we haveto do is submit our formal application and wait for our permit from the DEP to beginbuilding. That is the good news. The bad news is that, as with any governmentalprocess, although the actual review may take a few hours, the process will takeweeks. By the timeyou read this, theapplication shouldbe submitted andthe wait begins.

In additionto the finalization ofour plans with theDEP, we are alsobusy meeting withbanks and receivingproposal for thefinancing discussedat the Congrega-tional Meeting thispast December. Wehave also begun anin depth review of W

the bids submitted by the two low bidders and will be meeting with them1n Marchin order to make our final decision. Our preliminary review of the bids indicate thatthere has been no real change in the pricing structure since the project was initiallybid last year.

While I hate to be too optimistic, I think that a groundbreaking in the earlyspring will become a reality!!

As always, if there are any questions concerning this project, please feelfree to contact either myself or Mark Kasdin, Chair of the Expansion Committee.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL REPORTSPurim Fun

Ann Kanarek, Director

Get your costume, grogger, and masks ready, and plan to join usfor a wild Purim celebration at the synagogue on Sundaymom-ing, March 16 beginning at 11:00 am. The celebration ofPurim, one of the most joyous and fun-filled holidays ofour Jewishyear will start with a performance by the Sons ofTikvah Band. After the concert join us as we continue our fun at the syna-gogue-wide carnival and costume parade at 12 noon. On Mon-day, March 17, the Religious School will host a Purim PizzaParty at 6:00 pm. Following the party, at 6:30 pm, will be thereading of the Megillah.

The Megillah tells the story of the deliverance of theJews ofPersia from the destruction planned against them byHaman, vizier ofKing Ahasuerus. This feat was accomplishedby the monarch’s Jewish wife, Esther, and her cousin, Mordecai. There is no merrier occasion in the Jewish year than Purim.Tradition dictates that on Purim we must observe “ShalachManot,” the sending of gifts to friends and to the poor as a to-ken of deliverance and to add to the joy of everyone at this fes-tive time. Tradition also says that we should be so intoxicatedwith merriment at this season that we fail to distinguish betweenthe cursing ofHaman and the blessing ofMordecai... 6 or be-tween what is real and what is spoof

©THEPTOPPITRMREVEAIED©Two of the University ofDublin’s most noted anthropolo-gists, Dr. Patrick Fitzmorris and Dr. Morris Fitzpatrick, haveannounced the findings of a 20-year study: Purim is really anIrish festival. That’s why it always takes place around St.Patrick’s Day.

“A festival involving a McGillah has to be Irish,”said Dr. Fitzmorris. “You can’t convince me otherwise,” Dr.Fitzpatrick added. “I have to conclude that the Jewish peoplehave stolen the ancient Irish festival and renamed it Purim.

Originally known as O’Purim, the celebration wasbased on the life of an orphan colleen, Esther McGillicuddy, who happened to be a kosher caterer serving royalty. Esther’suncle, Morty McGillicuddy, wanted her to marry ShamusO’Haman, the Meyer ofClare.

The wedding was called offwhen O’Haman wasjailed for watering his rum and selling it to the British Navy. But the tradition stuck and since watered rum is known asgrog (no joke, folks), O’Haman became the first grogger.

The claim has created an uproar in the Jewish Com-munity. Dr. Paul Burganschweros, president of the Conser-vative Congregation ofGalway Bay, Our Lady ofPerpetualNachas, said, “We will get our holiday back.” PatrickMoskowitz of the Tipperary Shul, a long way from Dublin, declined comment until he could discuss the matter furtherwith his parliamentary representative, Lord Ian Draycup.
