Congratulations to theClass of 2020

The Class of 2020 definitely had a memorable last year of high school. Although they missed out on many senior events and activities in their final months as seniors, the administration, teachers, and students were determined to honor them with as normal a graduation ceremony as possible. Graduation was held outside, something that hasn't happened since 1991, with our beautiful school as the backdrop. Although it was raining throughout the ceremony, all went smoothly and the seniors were sent

off afterwards with a parade through town. Mrs. Leah Andre, teacher, was the guest speaker. Mr. Freeman had a few words of wisdom and advice for students before he pronounced them graduates. Thank you to everyone who made this ceremony possible and special. The video of the ceremony can be found on our school's website.

Congratulations to our graduating seniors. You are strong, resilient, and will do great things in the future. Best wishes to each and everyone of you!

Team Cincinnatus Takes 1st Place at the Cortland County Envirothon

Our Cincy team placed first in the Cortland County competition on May 7. Team members are Justice Crane, JuShawna Crane, Shannon Ryan, and Georgia Warner. Envirothon is an opportunity to learn about NY’s natural resources and wildlife, then test your knowledge against neighboring schools. This year, Shannon studied wildlife, Georgia studied aquatic ecology, Justice studied forestry and water resources, and JuShawna studied soils. Some of the tasks they were challenged with were identifying leaves, soil types, and animal nests, as well as making judgements on how best manage forests and groundwater resources. The team studied various guidebooks and practice tests, and drew on their outdoor experiences to be successful. Despite the difficulties of learning and testing online, the team kept up a hard work ethic and let their teamwork shine during the online test. The moved onto the State Competition May 28, where they placed 6th out of 18 teams! Great job ladies, you made Cincinnatus very proud. "I am proud to say that our Envirothon Team studied very hard, had a lot of fun, and deserve a lot of credit! Our students are capable of awesome things no matter the circumstances." Submitted by Mr. Balzani, High School Science Teacher

Fourth Graders Shine Through Distance Learning

Fourth grade students worked hard through this challenging time. Students met regularly on Zoom with their teachers and peers. Students researched our Founding Fathers, created COVID19 time capsules, created projects to go along with the books they were reading, and even created science experiments. Students read the novels: Wish, The One and Only Ivan and My Side of the Mountain. Students also continued to work on their math skills using websites Zearn, Khan Academy and Xtramath. The fourth grade teachers would like to express how proud we are of our students for stepping up during a difficult time and continuing to learn and work so hard!!! Thank you fourth graders! We have missed you so much!!!! Submitted by: Ms. Pierce & Ms. Flurschutz

My Side of the Mountain Nature Projectby Cash Hall

I am Cash Hall trying to get someone to live in my tree. My tree has two rooms, a bedroom and a random room. My tree has a deer hide door. The rooms are pretty big, the bed is pretty big too. If you wanted to make it two stories, you could because it’s so big and spacious.

I have made a bed out of wood and deer hide. My tree is designed for the winter, that is why there is a wood pile set up. Some of the bark came off on the outside of the tree but it still works as a shelter. This tree was already hollowed-out but I made it better. The rooms kind of have walls, which is weird.

The random room could be a storing room for food or supplies. There is a lot of wood outside in a big, huge pile. You can probably make the rooms a bit bigger. If you make the rooms bigger, then you would have more room but it could take time.

So that is why you should live in my tree.

Sam Gribley's Tree: My model has a bed and a log pile, with a deer hide dor in a holowed out tree.

Homemade Fishing Pole

I took a sumac tree and whittled the bark off. I hammered a hole in the end to put the string in. I then connected my whittled, wood hook to the string.

Extra Credit:I whittled a fish and a hook.

Students were assigned to read the book, My Side of the Mountain, and make a model of the house Sam, the main character, made as he lived off the land in the Catskill Mountains. Students also created their own homemade fishing poles and learned to whittle. Everything was made from natural materials. Students even wrote persuasive essays to go along with their projects. Below is Cash Hall's project.

Fourth Graders Shine Through Distance Learning cont'd

The grade 4 students also studied volcanos also during their time at home. They designed their own volcano using salt dough. The eruptions were created using elephant toothpaste, hydrogen perox-ide, yeast and dish soap. This formed a slow thick eruption of lava. They did a great job with this project!

The Cincinnatus Central School District works to convey information to students, parents, businesses and community members in a variety of ways. One major source of information is the school district website which can be found on the Internet at www.cc.cnyric.org.

Another method of communication within the district is this publication, The Lion's Roar, which is produced by students enrolled in the high school course, Computer Publications. The newsletter is published entirely by students and the printing completed by OCM BOCES. In addition to the website and newsletter, there are also a variety of classroom newsletters, grade reports and parent memos sent home via students and/or mail.

The purpose of these communication tools is to share information about our district, to showcase student, faculty, and staff endeavors, as well as provide resources for students, parents, community members and faculty. We welcome input from all of the school community in making this communication more efficient and more valuable. In utilizing new technologies the district may want to post children's work or pictures on our website and/or in district publications. This could include photos, writings, artwork, or videos recorded for our in-house TV station. Parents or guardians who do NOT wish to have their child’s name and/or photograph on the district web site, in student video productions, in the newsletter or other publications, must notify the district in writing of their wishes. This must be done each school year. Please send any related correspondence to:
