PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY Priesthood Sunday is a special day set aside to honor priesthood in the United States. It is a day to reflect upon and affirm the role of the priesthood in the life of the Church as a central one. The 29th of September, parishioners are encouraged to offer a prayer of thanksgiving and offer support for our Pastor, Fr. Shea, Fr. John, Fr. Jim, Fr. Luis, and other Priests who have served our parish. Consider sending our Priests or Priests who have been special in your lives a note

or card of appreciation for their dedication to us, the Body of Christ. Priesthood Sunday was established in 2001 to honor Priesthood in the Church and recognize those who are called to this life of service. This nationwide event is coordinated and sponsored by the USA Council of Serra International and Serra Clubs throughout our Dioceses. If you are interested in finding out more about this wonderful group who supports Vocations please contact Mr. Pat Cunningham at 805-650-9492. We invite you to be our guest at St. John Seminary, for details please call Mr. Cunningham.

“Now more than ever, we need the Lord to raise up an army to strengthen His Church and spread the Gospel. The prayer, fasting and service you do as Serrans, for the sake of vocations, is essential to this work. ” Most Rev. Andrew H. Cozzens, STD, DD, outgoing Episcopal Adviser for Serra’s USA Council

The “Judas Shuffle” Have you ever felt the need to leave Mass early for whatever reason? Maybe you are running late for a brunch with friends or you have a ballgame to attend – or NFL Sunday is about to begin. Have you ever thought that if the situation were different, you might not be so inclined to step out before the final blessing? What if it was dinner at your CEO’s house or you were on a date with somebody you cared for very deeply? Would you walk out early on those people? Leaving before the final blessing or last hymn is largely a Catholic phenomenon. This “Judas Shuffle” is not as common in Protestant services or even those in Mormon Tabernacles and Jehovah’s Witness halls. Why are many Catholics so eager to make a beeline for the door before the Mass and the hymns are completed? We rush out of the Church and practically run each other over in the parking lot in an effort to be the first ones off the property. Is this behavior indicative of faithful Christians - or of those of us who simply feel that there are more important things we can be doing with our time? God must be first in our lives – everything else is secondary. According to Scripture, Judas Iscariot left the Last Supper early (John 13:27-29). He had been exposed by our Lord for the betrayal he was about to take part in. Part of the problem may be that since attending Mass on Sunday is an obligation, some feel that they can leave as soon as the obligation is met. One should never see Mass simply an obligation - but as an opportunity. At every Mass, we are brought to Calvary as the eternal sacr ifice of Jesus is re-presented before us. It is truly an honor and a blessing that we are witnesses to this sacrifice. It is, after all, this sacrifice that redeemed the world and allows us to obtain eternal salvation and be with God in heaven. We should see Mass as something we get to do – not something we have to do. If we are in a situation where we have to be somewhere else while Mass is taking place – perhaps it would be better to attend Mass at a different time. On any given Sunday, there is a Mass being celebrated every half-hour within driving distance. Many parishes also offer Saturday night vigil Masses or on Sunday evenings. Is our post-Mass appointment so urgent that it is necessary for us to leave the physical presence of our Lord with such haste? Are we faithful to Christ and the Eucharist – or are we like Judas, who left early to betray the Lord? If a football game or Sunday brunch is that important – then maybe we need to reexamine our faith commitment. As faithful Catholics, it is our obligation to attend Sunday Mass. When we finally realize that it is our supreme honor to be present – perhaps we will stop doing the Judas Shuffle . . .

Galatians: “What must we do to be saved?” The is the most important question a Christian can ask.

Paul’s letter to the Galatians provides the answer and reveals the merciful love God the Father has for his children. The Galatians:

Set Free to Live study speaks of the extraordinary gift of salvation Jesus has won for us and explains how we can unite

ourselves to Christ’s redeeming sacrifice through faith and love.

This 8-session program starts on Thursday, Sept. 12th and goes through Oct. 31st. It is presented by Jeff Cavins who explains

how Christ fulfilled the Law and set us free to live in the Spirit. Learn what “justification” means and how faith and works are an integral part of it. Discover how we become heirs to the promises

and blessings of Christ through faith. This study will be held at St. Rose of Lima School in

room 8 at 7pm on Thursday evenings. For more information or to register for the upcoming bible study,

call Dr. Neil Fanning at 805-217-4300 or via email: [email protected]

DID YOU KNOW? To establish confidence with your children start with questions about their daily activities Sometimes children will behave in a manner quite unusual for them – stress, misunderstanding, or some form of abuse can be related to such behaviors. If you see your child exhibiting unusual behavior, talk with your child about their day or recent experiences in an open-ended conversation. Do ask factual questions, such as, “What did you do today? Did you do anything unusual today? Who did you see today? Did anyone say or do anything that was unusual or even upsetting? Then, ask feeling questions as a follow-up, and remember that sometimes it’s easier for a child to talk about someone else’s feelings first.

¿Hiciste algo inusual hoy? ¿A quién viste hoy?

805-501-5275.
