Application of New Technologies in China’s Major Pipeline Projects

1. Strain-based Pipeline Design

Along with the rapid development of pipeline industry in the past 20 years, pipelines are required to be adaptable in much tougher environments, such as strong seismicin much tougher environments, such as strong seismic regions, and active fault zones. Thus strain-based design (SBD) is developed for making full use of pipeline’s plastic deformability so as to be adaptable to the motionplastic deformability, so as to be adaptable to the motion of surrounding subsoil while causing no damage to its structural stability.

SBD research results have been successfully adopted in the aseismic design of WE Line II.

SBD is equally applicable in any new pipelines crossing strong seismic and active fault zones.

92 welding procedures are developed, including automatic welding, semi-automatic welding, manual welding re welding etcwelding, re-welding, etc.

These procedures are applied with excellent results in the field welding for WE Line IIthe field welding for WE Line II.

Among these procedures, there are no application precedent in the field of the semi-automatic welding for

11 welding procedures for X80 grade high deformability steel pipes are developed, including 6 for shielded metal arc welding, 2 for semi-automatic welding with self-shielded flux-

d i d 3 l t i ldi i ldi Thcored wire, and 3 electric-arc welding repair welding. The welds produced using these procedures exceed the base metal in strength.

These procedures were successfully applied in X80 high deformation steel pipes in strain design area of WE Line II. And they also can be used in the future pipelines of high

Φ48”, X80 grade Tees, reducers, pipe caps and pressed bends are manufactured to MSS SP-75-1998 and relevant standards for WE Line IIrelevant standards for WE Line II.

Their costs are generally 30% lower comparing with imported productsimported products.

These hot-press pipe fittings were successfully used in Central Asia gas pipelines as well as WE Line II.

Semi-automatic welding spread equipped with Φ48” pipeline pneumatic internal clamp of space adjustable type and automatic welding spread equipped with Φ48”type, and automatic welding spread equipped with Φ48 , 8 welding torch internal welding machine are used in WE Line II.

These two spreads welded 41Km with the welding qualification rate being over 95% and 98% separately.

19 technical standards were developed and were fully applied in WE Line II. These standards are in general equivalent to ASME or APIequivalent to ASME or API.

The standards for field welding of X80 steel grade high deformability pipes, hydro-technological protection,deformability pipes, hydro technological protection, safety and environmental supervising, and for completion acceptance filled the domestic blanks in pipeline construction standards

To maintain the mechanical properties of X80 steel pipes, epoxypowder with its curing tempering lower than 200 is used as theprimer, and the preheating temperature of steel pipes is also controlp p g p p pbelow 200 .

The 3PE coating applied using this technology reached the requiredcorrosion resistancecorrosion resistance.

This technology has successfully been applied to WE Line II.

During 12th Five-year Plan period, China’s total gas liquefying capacity will reach 4.3~5 million tons per day, including 5 million m3/d for coal bed gas liquefaction.m3/d for coal bed gas liquefaction.

China will build three national reserve with an LNG reserve increase of 1.5 million t/d;

A number of small and medium-sized emergency LNG storage tanks will be built in the central and eastern cities, with an total capacity of about 250,000 tons.

It is estimated that by 2015, 16 LNG receiving terminals will be built in Southeast coastal with the receiving capacity exceeding 44 million t/a.

Offshore Pipeline Prospect


Now, the total length of China’s offshore pipelines is only more than 3000 kmmore than 3000 km.

During the 12thFive-year Plan period, 2 or 3 deepwater oil/gas fields will be developed and put into operation inoil/gas fields will be developed and put into operation in offshore continental shelf and continental slope.

In the coming 5 years, about 15,000 km pipelines will be g y p pbuilt for oil and gas production, coastal gas networking and LNG transmission.
