Monday 19 June is Day 6

With the production coming up in the last week of term many of our students and staff are very busy rehearsing and preparing the sets for the show. It is a big commitment for all involved and I am certainly looking forward to the show at the end of the term.

The building at school continues and we plan to have D Block re roofed and the fence and gate at the front all finished in the next few weeks. The administration block is now being totally re done on the inside and this has now started.

The school ball, one of the calendar highlights of the year for our seniors, is this Saturday and we are all looking forward to this event.

Ex Student news …

Over the weekend, Rebecca Percy (Head Girl 2016), was officially awarded the New Zealand Women’s Graduate Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a first year woman who studies at AUT Akoranga or Massey Albany. It just goes to show that all the hard work done in College really pays off.

Her BC teachers, Ms Mexted, Ms Purdie and Mrs Place were all able to attend the presentation as support, and as a representation of some of the amazing teachers that have helped Rebecca, and hundreds of other students, reach successes that wouldn’t have been possible without their influence.

Wellington Jazz Festival

The BC Jazz sextet (Jeremy Belsham, Alexander Cox, Duncan Cameron, Max Bramley, Reuben Tan, & Ben Frisby) traveled to Wellington last week to attend and perform at the Wellington Jazz Festival.

Highlights of the trip included seeing Bill Frissell perform, as well as being workshopped by the legendary Dave Weckl (Chick Corea Electric Band), who gave them glowing compliments.

They were in Wellington for 3 nights watching a smorgasbord of acts and performing at Victoria University's 'Wellington Jazz Project'.

The band will be performing at various community events this year and are hoping to find a regular local gig to continue honing their skills.

The plight of Refugees

The plight of refugees has been in the news a great deal recently. An estimated 12 million people live in refugee camps worldwide and only 0.1% are resettled, repatriated, or integrated into normal society each year. The feature-length documentary, Warehoused, explores the plight of long-term refugees through a glimpse into the lives of those living in Dadaab, Kenya, one of the world’s largest refugee camps.

If you, or your family, are interested in viewing this film, you can do so on their worldwide release day: Tuesday 20 June 2017. Just click on the link, and even though the website references ‘hosting a screening’ that is not a requirement, as this opportunity to view the film free of charge can be taken up by individuals or families.
