CONGRATULATIONS TO JAVELINA pole vaulter JordanYamoah, who was a silver medalist in the All-Africa Games lastweek in Brazzaville, Congo.

Yamoah became the fourth Javelina to compete in aninternational event this summer.

High jumper Jeron Robinson, sprinter Kaina Martinez andhurdler Sergio Rios were in the Pan American Games in Canada.

Robinson was fourth in the Pan Am competition.

THE JAVELINA CROSS country teams will run in CorpusChristi Friday and it’s the closest thing to a home meet for theJavelinas.

In the past, the meet has been held at West Guth Park, whichwas convenient for Javelina fans.

This year it has been moved to the Dugan Stadium area at 700Nile Drive near the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi campus.

Still, it’ll give the Javelina fans an opportunity to see theJavelinas in action without taking a long trip.

The women’s race begins at 6:15 p.m. and the men will run at 6:45.

JAVELINA FOOTBALL, WHICH posted numerous “firsts”since starting the sport in 1925, will get another one next fall whenit takes on a Canadian team for the first time.

The Javelinas will meet Simon Fraser of Vancouver, BritishColumbia, in the Seattle area.

The exact site hasn’t been finalized.Simon Fraser, actually located in Burnaby, a suburb of

Vancouver, is the only Canadian football team playing in the NCAA.The Klansmen are members of the Great Northwest Athletic

Conference. The Javelinas have played teams from that league for four

consecutive years before this fall.Central Washington was on the schedule in 2011-13 and

Humboldt (Calif.) State was on the 2014 slate. The Javelinas have met teams from Mexico in the past and

they will possibly become the only U.S. collegiate football squad toplay teams from three different countries when they go againstSimon Fraser.

The Javelinas have also played in five different countries, another accomplishment no other college team can claim. Thesquad has played in, along with the U.S. and Mexico, Austria,France and Germany.

The contests in Austria, France and Germany came during athree-week exhibition tour with Henderson (Ark.) State in thesummer of 1976.

It will also be the first game for the Javelinas in Seattle. But there should have been a game there in 1977.

The Javelinas, who had won three consecutive NAIA nationalchampionships, tied Abilene Christian, 25-25, in their head-to-headmatchup that season and ended up tied for the Lone StarConference title. But the Wildcats were chosen to take part in thepostseason playoffs and advanced into the championship, taggedthe Apple Bowl, in Seattle’s Kingdome. (Continued on Page 3)

TWO FORMER JAVELINA football players hold positions inthe Texas High School Coaches Association this school year.

Mark Smith, immediate past president of the group, is on theboard of directors and Abel Gonzalez is one of eight on the footballadvisory committee.

Smith is the head football coach at San Antonio Madison HighSchool and Gonzalez is the head football coach at Rio Grande CityLa Grulla High School.

THE JAVELINA FOOTBALL team has played squads fromthe Gulf South Conference for decades and the Javelinas are awareof the strength of the league.

Apparently this is another big year for the conference clubs. In the NCAA Division II power ratings last week, selected by theNCAA, four of the top 10 teams are in the GSC.

West Georgia was No. 2, Delta (Miss.) State No. 6, Valdosta(Ga.) State No. 9 and North Alabama No. 10.In the polls compiled by the American Football Coaches Associationand D2Football.com, the GSC had four teams in the top 11 lastweek.

Another power in the league is West Alabama, and theJavelinas will be hosting the Tigers Sept. 26 in Javelina Stadium.

FORT VALLEY (GA.) staged a 25-point rally to defeat Lane(Tenn.), 50-38, Sept. 12.

The Wildcats trailed 25 points in the third period when itstaged the comeback.

Don Pittman, former Javelina coach, is the head football coachat Fort Valley.

EVEN THOUGH MIDWESTERN State lost a home game byplaying in the Lone Star Football Festival last weekend in AT&TStadium in Arlington, MSU head coach Bill Maskill says he is a bigproponent of the Festival.

“It’s good for everybody,” he said. “I wouldn’t change it abit. Our kids like it, their kids like it. You are taking a home gameaway from somebody but it’s a good tool and I’d do it again andagain and again.”

For Midwestern State, which is two hours from Arlington, thegames in the Cowboys’ stadium are like a home contest.

The Festival is considered one of the highlights of the NCAADivision II football season each year. It has produced eightpostseason playoff teams, five NFL draft picks and the 2012national champion, Valdosta (Ga.) State.

THE TARLETON STATE football program has had more thanits share of tragedies over the past five years. In 2010, defensive tackle Zach Shaver died after collapsing in apractice session.

Two years later, Dr. Ron Newsome, who was the TSU long-time play-by-play announcer and former athletic director, wasfound dead in his home. (Continued on Page 4)
