s The End of the World As We Know It
In Europe, millions were dying from the plague. Many believed it was a sign of God’s judgment and that the world was about to end
Inventions such as the printing press and the pocket watch, and a quickly rising new middle class, were all evidence of a changing world
The Christian church was the supreme power

s The Storm WithinMartin grew up with a picture of God as a stern, angry judge demanding perfection and waiting to send him to hell for his sin (How could you love a god like that?)
Martin saw his first Bible in 1503 (How old was he?)
Martin knew he was a sinner, but he also knew God demanded perfection. How could he find peace with God?

He punished his body
He wore his confessors out
