In December 1942, Hummel . instrueted Il. aber and Hoffmann,' two member;of Ref II KO Spain, to cause an explosion on a British freighter in Seville,Taber and Hoffmann concealed the explosives in several crates of orangesdestined for shipment on the freighter. The result of this operation Was thetotal destruction of the cargo; the ship, however, was not sunk. •

In February 1943, 'Taber and. Hoffmann undertook another sabotagemission against an English freighter in Lisbon. Time fuses were smuggled inwith the cargo, The ship was damaged, but was able to continue on to England,

In FebruAry 1944, Weber and Richter sabotaged a British ship (nameunknown) in Valencia. An exulosivo•charge was smuggled into the cargo of theship. According to Hummel, the explosion took place in London, but the shipwas not sunk.

Shortly after the surrender of Italy at the end of 1943, Hummel •received orders from Freytag-Loringhoven . to•s9.botage and prevent Italian shipsfrom reaching Allied ports. Most of these Italian ships were anchored. inHuelva, Cadiz, Cartagena, Barcelona, Rmd Vigo,

In Huelva, .Hoffmann and Water sabotaged one of the Italian shipsby affixing a mine to the hull, The boat was damaged and'eUbseqUently turnedover to the British.

Another successful sabotage mission executed in Cadiz in the Summer'of 1943 was the damaging of an Italian freighter by means of a magnetic mine,In Barcelona the engine of the boat was damaged by its crew; the Britishsubsequently seized the ship and had it repaired.

In the Summer of 1943,Freytagr-Loringhoven ordered the preparationof depots of sabotage materials in anticipation of an Allied invasion of Spain,Each . depot consiSted of One box, approximately twenty . by twenty-five by thirty-

. five . centimeters, containing incendiaries, explosives, small magnetic mines, and sabotage pencils of about fifteen centimeters long and six centimeterswide. Each box contained Spanish instructions for the handling of the sabo-tage material.

The caches were located in Southeastern Spain where am Allied . inva-sion was anticipated. Approximately twenty to twenty-Xive such depots wereset ue, but Hummel only knows of ten (cee sketches on f011owing pages), Thefollowing members of Ref II assisted in depositing the cases of sabotagematerial:Naber, Hoffmann, Ritter,.and Memmel, Photegraphs Rnd precisesketches were made of the locations of the depots so that they could be foundin ease of need. Three sets of sketches were drawn up, and early in 1944sent to Hptm Guenther Kaumann of Abwöhr Abt II Berlin. Hummel is not aware'of the present location of the sketches,

In November 194•, Hummel received the order from Maj pp- Naumann,.AbtII Berlin, to take over Loitstolie II Vost, Naj Brandt was Humnal l s prede-cessor: . he was stationed. in Bad Ems at the time.

Leitstello II 'Test was under the jurisdiction of I-C (14.2) of Ober.:befehlshaber vest under Obst Zolling, with the PIK' 211 . them under 0/LtMushlrran and . FAK . 212 under Hptm Gehrken„

The objective of Leitstelle II West was to secure the proper functionof the PARS by sunplying them with sabotage material and personnel, and bypreparing the onerational plans for agents,

Each FAX had four YAMS with one commissioned officer in .cherge, Thechart below shows the organization of Leitstelle II West in November 19444

Toward the end of 1944, FAX 211 and FAK 212 were engaged chieflyin placing sabotage dumps on the left side of the Rhine, Demelition workand the recruiting of agents from French collaborationists and Flemish workerswas also being carried out,

The sabotage material had been picked up in four or five cases fromAbt I I Gruppe Technik in Quenz and vas taken by FAT 249 to Kehlbach, not farfrom Bad Ems, In Kohlbach the explosives were packed into approximatelyforty German ammunition boxes and sent by truck to FAX 211, stationed in thevicinity. of Yeustadt, and to FAX 212, stationed in Zwolie, Holland, Mbehlmannof FAX 211 received about twenty boxes, and ordered von Otto of FAT 251 to burythe explosives in the vicinity of . Ragenau and Youstadt, 'Gehrken-of FAX 212.received, the remainder of the boxes, and instructed Kutschke of PAT 261 tobury them near Dueren and Krefeld. •

Hummel is not certain if Gehrken and Muehlmann received the photo-stats of the sketches of the locations of the sabotage duMps„ Von Otto andKutschke should be in the position to . locate . the caches buried in Holland andon the western bank of the Rhine,

Hummel further states that he did not receive any kind of informationrevealing the sabotage dumps buried by Kutschke and von Otto. HumMei signeda sworn statement denying knowledge of the location of sabotage dumps in Franceand in Germany.

During the course of the interrogation, Hunmel mentioned .W Brandtof Leitstelle II Paris at the one who began to organize sabotage, depotS.inPrance during the period from December 1943 to April 1944, Brandt designatedFAY. 211 to set up sabotage depots in France in December 1943, All four FATsof YAK 211 partiOpated in burying the explosives, The commanders of the IPATs,at well as Brandt, should be able to reveal the ideation of the caches, andshould be helpful in furnishing information leading to the discovery of thedepots in France,.

Himmel claims that Liebert of FAT 249 photographed and eketchea mostof the caches in France, but lost the documents in an Allied air attack,

Agent Activities of Leitstelle II Vest

Hummel states that his attempts to organize a not of agents provedfutile.

In Demnber 1944, Hummel ordered Schuster of FAT 258 to approachFrench collaborators who were willing to serve as agents for the Leitstelie II

proximately twenty Frenchmen belonging to the Doriot Group were re-cruited by Schuster. The training of these men took place in the vicinity ofOberkireh and Freudonstadt in the.Schwarzwald. The Frenchmen wore trained inthe use of various sabotage materials and in the handling of weapons.

In March 1945,the training was discontinued and Hummel is certain thatnone of the Frenchmen was committed as 'a sabotage agent or used for crossing thefront lines. He assumes that they were captured by Allied Forces and returnedto France.

Another attempt in setting up am: agent net was started by Hummel in .December 1944. He instructed Liebert of FAT 249 to contact Flemish slaveworkers and hire them for sabotage work. Four 21.zmish workers, names unknown, were selected to receive sabotage training. Wagner and Seeliger, both of FAT.249, were their instructors. Two men wore insiructed in the use of sabotagematerials, the third man received W/T training, and. the fourth man was droppedfor incompetence.

Hummel states that only the man trained as a WI! operator was colaimitted as an agent. He was turned over to Abt I Wiesbaden in January 1945;and parachuted with a W/T set in the vicinity of Antwerp. The agent was. ableto ostablish li/T'connection with Wiesbaden, and, reported on damagcs caused byV-2 bombs. No other agent activities were carried on by Hummel because ofGermanys grave military situationf which made all efforts futile.

COPMFAITS ANDMCOLIDATIONS

Hummel has been cooperative and eager to give information. There is nodoubt that he was a convinced follower of the Nazi doctrine, and only by acci-dont . failed to receive his membership card it the SS. It is therofore'recom-mended that he be sent to an interment camp; where his political Status maybe determined according to current directives.
