Good Afternoon!Today we will be learning about
Simple conversions with Customary Units
Let’s warm up :
What unit would you use to measure the weight for each?
1) A story book.
2) A dog.
3) A paper napkin.
4) A bag of apples.
1) pound
2) kg
3) ounce
4) pound
CONFIDENTIAL 2
Let’s review what we did in the previous chapter
WEIGHT: It is a customary measurement that tells how heavy an object is.
Like, we can say that:The dog’s weight is equal to 12 pounds.
An ounces (oz) is used to measure weight in the customary system.
CONFIDENTIAL 3
Review
The cat’s weight is 9 pounds.
A strawberry’s weight is 1 ounce (oz).
A pineapple’s weight is 1 pound (lb).
A car’s weight is 1 ton (T).

Review
When measuring capacity in the customary system the common units used are Ounces,
pound , and ton .
From smallest to greatest capacity measurements are compared as:
Ounces, pound and ton .

Review
Customary Units of Weight
16 ounces (oz) = 1 pound (lb)
2,000 pounds (lb) = 1 ton (T)
Customary Units use to measure the weight are:

Review
Which is more reasonable for the weight of a bag of oranges – 1 pound or 1 ounce?
A bag of oranges is too large to weigh an ounce. An ounce would be the weight of something very light. So, measuring in
terms of pound would be more appropriate.

Today we will learn about the Simple conversions with Customary
Units.
CONVERT: Change from one unit to another, such as from feet to inches.
Change Larger to Smaller units
To change to a smaller unit, multiply.
Example: How many inches are in 6 feet?
12 inches = 1 foot6 feet = 6 x 12 = 72 inches
CONFIDENTIAL 8
Change Smaller to Larger units
To change to a Larger unit, divide.
Example: How many feet is 48 inches?
1 foot = 12 inches48 inches = 48 ÷ 12 = 4 feet

Convert Gallons to Quarts
To change to a smaller unit, multiply.
Example: How many Quarts is 4 gallons?
We are given,
4 gallons = __ quarts4 x 4 = 16
4 gallons = 16 quarts
4 gallons is equal to 16 quarts.
CONFIDENTIAL 13
Convert Ounces to Pounds
To change to a Larger unit, divide.
Example: How many Pounds is 560 ounces?
We are given,
560 ounces = __ Pounds 560 ÷ 16 = 35
560 ounces = 35 Pounds
560 ounces is equal to 35 Pounds .
CONFIDENTIAL 14
Convert tons to pounds
To change to a smaller unit, multiply.
Example: How many Pounds is 2 tons?
We are given,
2 tons = __ pounds2 x 2,000 = 4,000
2 tons = 4,000 pounds
2 tons is equal to 4,000 pounds.
